Hello,

I've just started reading Space Captain Smith by Toby Frost. First book in the Chronicles of Isambard Smith series.

I'm enjoying it, and wondered if others have read this. Is it typical of the Steampunk genre?

God Emperor of Didcot the second book in the series is due out soon.

Well, I read Space Captain Smith and quite enjoyed the lighthearted jaunt in space. Others have been more critical, but if you want a light quick read then give it a go.

Still not sure if Captain Smith belongs to the Steampunk genre. There are some elements there. Perhaps others could let me know what they think.

I joined the group specifically to post about Isambard Smith and Toby Frost. I have all 6 of the “Space Captain Smith” books and have read all of them. The first is the best, I think—by the last one the jokes are wearing a bit thin and Smith and his ragtag crew are starting to look actually competent. The first one is an absolute hoot. But Toby seems like a good bloke and is apparently saving for a yacht,* so by all means buy the books. It’s something of an achievement that the books are still in print (and were still stocked in Waterstones) ten years after first publication.

Toby Frost is a very nice chap in person, but he's not the model for Smith on the cover. I always think he looks more like Colin Furze's posh older brother who stuck to the books and qualified as a lawyer.
