A (talking?) cat and some creature or person who gets turned into a glass frog or orb on a witch's desk? A children's chapter novel with - I think - some black and white illustrations. The protagonist was a young girl and I think she was a witch or lived in a family of witches or went to school with witches.
This is so vague and dreamlike, but I remember reading it about 20-25 yrs ago. My mom checked it out of the library for me so it would've been meant for a child under 10 yrs and it was probably either an award-winning novel or by a well-known author or had something serious about it, that my mom would've chosen it (she didn't believe in goofy reading material).
If anyone can help me remember this book, I would SO much appreciate it!
Cheers,
Lisa

Make sure you post this description under the 'Name That Book' group as well. You might get more luck there since that is the point of the group.
Good luck figuring it out. I wish it sounded familiar to me, but it doesn't.

Are you familiar with the website for Loganberry Books? www.loganberrybooks.com
They have a feature called Bookstumper where you can post your query for a very small fee and other readers offer their suggestions and solutions. It's great browsing what other people are trying to remember. I found one answer to a query I was considering posting and someone else was looking for the same book (Marianne Dreams). Good luck!
