physical summary not calculating correctly

Dez 12, 2023, 5:26 pm

Unless I'm not fully understanding the functionality of the Physical Summary field, I think I may have found a bug. Self-taught cataloguer here so please don't judge too harshly. I'm going through my collection and tidying mistakes originally made when first adding books (before I had better understanding how to do this). As part of this 'tidying up', I'm fixing pages numbers and noticed that the Physical Summary field does not update if I wipe out the data and then re-save.

If I change the page numbers, select save and then go back into the 'Edit your book' link, the data is completely unaffected and still reflects the old data. At first, I thought maybe it was just a problem for one specific book, but as I've moved on to editing other books, the same thing is happening.

For example:

This book has been edited to reflect 246 pages, but the Physical Summary still shows 259 pages, even after I deleted the the data in the field and selected 'Save'. However, if I delete the data in Summary field and select save, that will update, so I would expect that the Physical Summary field would behave similarly.

Two points:
1. Others don't get the same view as you. I.e. when I click on
I don't see the Physical Summary (And I can't edit your book data for obvious reasons)
2. When I look at the book in "Your books" view in a style displaying Physical Summary, it displays 246 pages, i.e. it looks fine.

So even though your bug report is quite detailed, we need it to be a bit more detailed (at least I do).
I.e. is the "Physical Summary" displayed in green (indicating that it is filled in automatically) and
when you write "go back into the 'Edit your book' link" do you mean that you use the browsers Back functionality rather than pressing the Edit book? I suspect that you use the browsers Back functionality which would give you exactly this behaviour.

I.e. I don't think it is a bug. I think it is just the browser that displays the old data because you haven't refreshed the data. So either use the "Edit your book" link or use Back and then Reload.

Disclaimer: I may have misunderstood everything in >1 chocorua: :-)

>2 bnielsen: Thank you for your response, I was trying to be detailed, hoping not to miss anything pertinent so I truly appreciate your points. In response, the Physical Summary is not in green, it is black. I have edited the imported data in the past. However, when I delete / clear that field and save the page it refills the field with exactly the same data that was previously in that field, not with the updated information from the Physical Description section, such as the pagination. When going back to edit my book, I am also not using the browser's back button, I am selecting the 'Edit your book' link. Hope this clarifies and thank you again for the assistance!

I believe that this is a background process that runs every few days and it isn't something that runs immediately upon edits. How long did you wait between editing and checking?

>4 gilroy: Ah, perhaps this is the issue. I am checking as soon as I've made the change. I'll give it a few days before checking again and then report back.

>3 chocorua: I think all my "Physical summary" details are green, so that at least explains why I've never seen this behaviour. Thanks!

Reporting back as it's now been a few days. Unfortunately, for the book linked above the information has not yet updated in the Physical Summary. Interestingly, since I posted this, I've noticed the books where the text is green in the Physical Summary, those fields will "update" if I edit the pagination as soon as I save it. However, if the text is black because it's been edited in the past, the Physical Summary does not update if I edit the pagination.

>7 chocorua: If you edited the text and it turned black, you locked that text. It won't update.
Green text updates, because the system is guessing what should be there.

That's not a bug

>8 gilroy: Understood, but what confuses me then is the fact that this does not hold true for the Summary field. I have (and do) edit the Summary, turning the text black, however, if I wipe out the text in the Summary field, then edit the data in the Title field, it does update with the newly edited information - in green! So I expected the same behavior for the Physical Summary field.

>9 chocorua: That's what the bug is, then. A blank physical summary field isn't generating the proper green text. It should operate the same as summary.
