From the email newsletter today:

We did nail down rights for Watership Down by Richard Adams. No publication information is yet available, and probably will not be forthcoming for a couple of years, but layout starts on September 1!

I saw that just now, too. Very interesting.

I saw this and was less than enthused. My only experience reading Richard Adams was “The Girl in the Swing” when Centipede published that previously. I have to say, of all the books that I’ve read of those Centipede has chosen to publish over the past several years, this was my least favorite. I’ve never read Watership Down, but I’m hesitant to try Adams again.

Read Watership Down as a teen but can't remember if I'd like to do a reread in a nice edition. I read Shardik back then too and think I liked that one better but also am unsure. There's a foggy veil over my adolescent reading after piling on a few more decades.

>3 HowardEriksonWolfe:

Was it the writing style or the plot that you disliked the most? If the latter, the plot of Watership Down appears to be much, much different from that of The Girl in a Swing.

It might be interesting to look at the correlation between member ratings of these two novels. I wish I were a better data-scraper!

ETA: Well, here's some low-hanging fruit. Of those (non-private) LT members who rated both novels, here's how those who rated The Girl in a Swing low (3 or lower) rated Watership Down:

Of those who gave TGiaS 1 star, 1 gave WD 1 star and 1 gave WD 2 stars. (1.5 average)
Of those who gave TGiaS 2 stars, 3 have WD 3 stars, 1 gave WD 3.5 stars, 1 gave WD 4 stars, and 6 gave WD 5 stars. (4.2 average)
Of those who gave TGiaS 2.5 stars, 1 gave WD 3 stars, 1 gave WD 3.5 stars, and 1 gave WD 5 stars. (3.8 average)
Of those who gave TGiaS 3 stars, 5 gave WD 3 stars, 11 gave WD 4 stars, and 13 gave WD 5 stars. (4.3 average)

I would say there were aspects on both the writing and the plot that I was adverse to. I felt as though there were motivations for the characters that were never explained (at least to my satisfaction). While I didn’t dislike reading the prose, I felt as though the pacing was extraordinarily slow and made the book a trudging, dull experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I honestly cannot find an aspect of it I don't like.
