Thanks for the report. If you haven't already provided these details, can you please let us know:

1. Which app are you using: the iOS or Android app?
2. When did you last see this error, can you give us the date/time and timezone?
3. Where/how did you see the error: only on specific pages in the app, or after trying to run a certain action like scan-to-add a book, or search your catalog, upload a cover, etc.?

I suspect lingering issues from our migration last week (see https://www.librarything.com/topic/353456), we'll have to take a look with further details from you if possible. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reports, a couple more questions if you don't mind:

1. Which version of the App do you have (from the Home > Account page)?
2. What OS is your Android device?

I just downloaded today and am having the same issues. When I go to "Your Catalog" I only get the loading spinner and when I go to the "Add to Catalog" page it has "Error with Authentication token combination" directly underneath the search bar. I get the same notification when trying to scan in a book and when trying to use the search bar. I have just tried both of these at the time of posting

Just downloaded app, same error. Able to add books on web interface, but on Android app I get the same error message in 'Add to Catalog' (after scanning a book or manually entering ISBN) or when I click on 'cover explorer'. And I can't view my catalog (loading spinner). Excited to use app, so hope this issue is being resolved!

Same error Samsung Galaxy S10, Android app, 5:46 NZT, 11th Dec, 2023. Get this error when trying to add books to my library from phone using scan-to-add a book, or search for a book using author or ISBN.

Looks like this bug has been reported by dozens of users over the past 6 months. Surprised to discover the bug is still not fixed.

Received another report of this bug from a user- here are the details:

Using Android app version 1.1.3.
They just downloaded the app today (12-19-2023), and got the error message upon scanning their first book.

They tried a few hours later, and had no issues scanning- sounds like the issue could be related to a separate system issue.

Hello, This has happened to me just now.
Can't scan with app "Error with authentication token combination"

Android app
Between 14:05 AEST (UTC+10) today (2 JAN 24)
When going into the "add" page or after scanning a barcode on that page
Have restarted phone, but same error occurs.

>7 kristilabrie: 1. Which app are you using: the iOS or Android app? Android App
2. When did you last see this error, can you give us the date/time and timezone? January 8, 2024 at 11:04 am. Central Time Zone.
3. Where/how did you see the error: only on specific pages in the app, or after trying to run a certain action like scan-to-add a book, or search your catalog, upload a cover, etc.? The error appears under the "Add to Catalog" tab on my LibraryThing app. I just opened an account and downloaded the app today. I was hoping to scan my collection. I'd prefer to delete my account and app if this cannot be fixed - I have several hundred books to enter into my personal catalog.

1. Which version of the App do you have (from the Home > Account page)? LibraryThing Version 1.1.3 (build 30)
2. What OS is your Android device? Galazy S21, Android version 14

This appears to have been going on for several months. Is this getting fixed?

I see this is a chronic issue. I have just discovered Library Thing Version 1.1.3 (build 30), have joined, and added the app to my Samsung Galaxy S20 FE phone on 5G (with Android 13). When I attempt to scan any books, I get the message "Error with authentication token combination" for each scan. I know my phone is scanning correctly because I also installed another library app for Android called "Book Catalogue." That app scans perfectly, capturing all the info on the same books that I am trying to scan with Library Thing.

I googled "Error with authentication token combination" and found it occurs only on Library Thing. When I click on the link, it takes me to this Bug Collectors section. I appear to be the 31st entry to this discussion, and no one seems to have any insight into the solution.

Library Thing is a useless app without scanning ability.

Any ideas to resolve this issue?

I've also just down loaded the app and got the same error message. I was recommended this site but what a waste of time if it can't scan books in! Why is it taking so long for this error which was reported ages ago to be fixed?

>32 gh2935:

There is a very unsatisfactory response to this question, which is that LibraryThing has a limited staff and problems get different priorities. The time a bug takes to solve will be a factor of the difficulty of the problem, the importance of the problem, and the staff who are in position to address it. If LibraryThing has only one Android developer, who has too many other more important tasks (e.g. maintaining the integrity of the database), or if it has none (because its one Android developer has left), then it's going to be hard to fix. :-( My suspicion, based on all the complaints, is that some library used in the android app has changed its behavior, and it's a tricky fix. But while I have done some limited android coding, years ago, I don't know what happens inside LT.

Realize that LibraryThing is not an app; it's a web database that can be accessed via a web browser or, with some limitations, via apps. As a web database, it mostly works pretty well: You can scan books via other sorts of scanners, or you can enter them via the web interface. Then you can at least access the list on your phone. The app is supposed to help you manipulate the database, but in this case, it doesn't help. :-(

Obviously it would be better if the bug were fixed, since it seems like this one gets more complaints than any other. But code does not fix itself. :-(

Popping here to say that this issue is not being ignored, >33 waltzmn: has a good general sense of the timeline of certain bugs on LibraryThing, and this one has been in the bucket of "tricky to fix" and "resources to devote" ... this is a big one on conceptDawg's list, and he hopes to have a fix for this in place as soon as possible. I'm sorry I can't promise an immediate timeline, but we will post on this thread when we have any update! Thanks for hanging in there (even if you don't have much of a choice at the moment... :) ).

This should be solved now but if you are already seeing this error you may need to sign out of LT and sign back in to reset it.
