My rating system is as follows:

1 = Very Very bad. Either I could not finish the novel, or the plot was ill-conceived

2= Still bad. I managed to finish the book. It was probably boring, unoriginal or poorly written (D)

3= Solid. There was character development, the pace was probably slow or parts of the book were well thought out. Still had the ability to make me think or at the very least want to continue reading, however, something was missing or could have been further developed. Slightly better than average. (C+ or B- or B+)

Subdivided into: Shaky ( barely got there), loose ( average) and solid ( just not quite there for a 3.5 or 4) ( B+)

4= Excellent read. I probably couldn't put the book down till it was finished. The Pace was spot on, complex characters, made me think in a different way and so on ( A -)

5= Absolutely perfect!

Diane Bestwick: And A Bird Sang

Lei and her husband have a beautiful baby boy. When Lei becomes pregnant she must wrestle with whether she is going to keep the baby or go through another abortion. As per law, she can only have a second child if she can pay the fine. This time she is adamant about keeping the child. She and her family face grave repercussions and are bullied and harassed by Gang ( an employee of the family planning committee).

Lots of issues/themes touched upon here and not always happy. Well written and by a Canadian author to boot!

Happy Tuesday!

I have not been reading much lately but hope to make a dent on that during my lunch break. I keep on getting interrupted by my co workers which is really annoying sometimes. If you see a person tucked in the corner and reading, why would it be a good idea to chatter non stop? I never used to read at work but I really dislike listening to the gossip about other people so I thought reading would send the message of "I'm busy, don't talk to me" Some still have not gotten the memo. Ah well.

One positive thing that has happened by reading at work is that some people now are actually having conversations about books they read and one or two co workers have slowly started to read at home again. I was able to provide both with a book to start their reading off. I also learned that one of my co workers who is always on the silent side has a lot good stories and interesting life experiences. Who knew!?

Anyhow, for supper today it's leftovers from yesterday which was pork tenderloin medallions in a three pepper sauce with rice and salad.

Hi Anita and happy new thread!

From your last thread, although I’ve never had poppyseed roll, my g-grandmother used to make poppyseed kolaches which I loved. I also like lemon poppyseed pound cake and poppyseed bagels. I stopped reading the Stephanie Plum series a long time ago, but was always Team Ranger.

I had a four-day work week in 1978-1979 and loved it. It was only two more hours per day and gave me a work-day off to run those pesky errands that can’t be done on the weekend, plus always three days in a row off.

I enjoyed The Ten Thousand Doors of January, giving it 4* in July of 2020.

The Austrian goulash sounds intriguing and I’ve found a recipe with US measurements that uses all the ingredients you listed except for roasted garlic and black pepper, which I’ll add.

Glad the dentist appointment went well. I had traumatic experiences as a child, too, and hate going every 6 months.
>25 figsfromthistle: Interesting that folks at your job are talking about books now, but irritating that they interrupt you. When people do that to me, I very slowly mark my place or read to the end of a Kindle page before looking up. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, but it always makes me feel good.

Happy Thursday!

Well today is a busy day. I have to go to the dentist after work. I know the last appointment went well but I am still nervous ( at least a little bit less though).

Yesterday after work I went to the library to drop off books and pick some up. There was a feisty old lady there with a friend of hers. The feisty one was telling her friend all about the three pines series and how she has read them all and needs something new to read. So I helped her out and started her on a new series and a few new to her authors. Apparently she reads a book every two days. Her friend looked more overwhelmed. I hope my selections for her worked out. I am sure that being such a small town I will bump into her again.

Tonights supper will be roasted potato wedges with a pan seared t bone steak and a salad ( that is if I can handle it after the dentist). Otherwise, it's chicken soup for me-which I made yesterday.

18. Marie Benedict: The Mitford Affair

A historical fiction about the Mitford sisters and their political leanings.

Told from various POV's ( all female). I am used to Benedict writing about strong and empowering women. This just really missed the mark for me. It was about some of the sisters infatuation with fascist ideals ( and party leaders) and about some of the other family members who opposed them.

It was not for me, and probably the first book of Benedicts that I did not enjoy.

It will be a while till my next one off but so far it's been nice. I was able to go to the farmers market ( only happens on the weekend). I met up with a few friends at the coffee shop and was able to read. I also got some laundry done and of course I got rid of the snow on the driveway and around the house. No new snow today so I wont have to worry about that.

Avery is a smart teenager who just wants to make it into University on a paid scholarship. Her world is upended when she discovers that she is the sole heir to a fortune. The Hawthorne family is not pleased. Soon they all band together and play a game that they can only win together.

Interesting. First in the series. YA literature. I was trying to picture a house that had clues and riddles hidden in it. It could be quite fun but exhausting all the time. There is always more than meets the eye.

Well I made it through the long work day! After I decided to go to the liquor store and get a few bottles of imported beer to enjoy for the rest of the week. The lady at the cashier asked me for my I.D. I had it in my car because I would have not thought that I look under 19 and would need proof. I thought that what happened next was kinda funny.

Cashier: " Could I please see your I.D?"
Me: "Umm I'm actually 30"
Cashier: "Really?"
Me: "Oh shoot that's my fake age....I think I turned 30 five times. Or is it six? I can't remember"
Cashier: " Considering you cannot remember your actual age perhaps you would like to get your I.D out?"
Me: "It's in my car...."
Cashier: " I'll put this aside then"
Me: " Sure but I don't think I can find my car because I'm too old to remember where I parked it"
Cashier laughs, looks around and says " That happens to you too? Oh never mind. Cash or credit?"

All about Pan Am, it's beginnings and the stewardesses that worked for the company. I did learn a bit from reading the book. I did not realize that the airline added routes to pick up and drop off soldiers and later evacuate children from Saigon. It was interesting to read about the dangers some of the crew faced and the training they received and the expectations and later, limitations put on them.

Interesting book that I picked out because the cover was cool.

22. Lilian Nattel: Only Sisters

Joan is a palliative care doctor who is also the primary caregiver for her mom. Her sister, Vivian, is blazing a trail as a nurse in war zones or remote areas of the world. Trying to make a difference but also forgetting home. However, Vivian makes a request of her sister that she promises to keep. In fulfilling this request she may be able to lead a different life-one she always envied.

The writing was good. Unfortunately it took a long time to get going. Lots of excellent scene setting for the type of house the two sisters grew up in and the relationship they had together. I think I was just not in the right mood for it.

Happy beginning of March!

I am so ready for spring to rear it's colourful head. Can't wait to get into the garden. This year I am planning to continue with my forest project and I really want to build my pathways as soon as I can.

Supper today will be easy- chilli. Yesterday I watched an episode of Escape to the Chateau. What an interesting couple those two are.

I have a day off! I have to get blood work done and an x ray. I have a few other errands at the bank as well. Grocery shopping and maybe if I am not too grumpy a haircut ;)

Almost finished reading Fairy Tale last night. Different than I expected from King as I have never read anything by him.

36. Stephen King: Fairy Tale

A young teenager is on his way home from school when he hears the grumpy/scary neighbours dog barking loudly and whining. He looks to see if everything is ok only to discover that the neighbour has fallen and needs help ASAP. The boy dog sits and later takes care of the old man. He is trusted with secrets that few will ever know.

Interesting Fantasy. I usually like books where other worlds are discovered . Lots of action that begins halfway in the book.

37. Torsten Krol: The Dolphin People

End of WW2, people are beginning to rebuild their lives. The Linden family decides to build a new life in Venezuela. Erich, the eldest sibling is forced to be strong for his younger brother. He accepts his mothers marriage to his uncle and puts on a brave face. However, a plane crash leaves them at the mercy of an Amazonian tribe. Some adapt to the new situation while others cannot. What the family soon discovers is that the newest member of the family ( Klaus) is not who he appears to be.

First half was all about the family, getting to Venezuela and learning to live with the tribe. Second half takes a different turn and focuses on Klaus and his role in the war.

Quite graphic at times

Happy Weekend!

I have today off :) Yesterday night we had a massive snow storm. There was even thunder snow ( which looked cool). The thunder behind my backyard appeared pinkish. First time I ever seen something like that. I know we received a lot of snow but I have not gone outside yet. From the window, the trees look beautiful. Thankfully, I brought home some gasoline for the snowblower.

Yesterday I watched Star trek: Picard season 3 episode 3. I have to say that so far, season 2 was much better.

Reading: I have a few books on the go at the moment and we shall see which one I finish first.

We also have a ton of snow. My friend who lives in Acton told me she had thunder snow. I have not experienced it, myself, but it must be weird to hear thunder and see lightning while snow is falling.

Everything here also looks beautiful from the window. My one cat is telling me he is happy to be indoors, the other is more likely wishing he could go out and play in it. Not happening! As for me, I did all my errands yesterday, in anticipation. You never really know when to believe the hype, they always seem to catastrophize snow storms, but still, glad to be inside, myself. I will likely shovel in the back later, to get the snow away from the foundation of the house, before the melting starts.

Glad you have the day off! No one should be on the roads today!

#4 in the series. A relaxed pace with little action but worked quite well. Lots of description of the Moor and it is here where the reader learns that Sherlock has another friend ( besides Holmes). Mary and Sherlock are much more in sync and trusting of each others investigative methods/findings.

Happy Mid week everyone!

I think that I have contracted a slight cold. It was my own fault, after clearing the snow on Saturday, I was sweating and it was so nice outside that I sat outside for a bit. Now my tonsils hurt. Drinking lots of ginger, honey and lemon tea. Hopefully it helps.

Reading front, I have quite a few books on the go but none seem to be grabbing my attention.

I made a pot of chicken soup and will probable just have a chicken caesar salad for supper.

My parents are going to Europe for 6 weeks and leave next week. I have a lot of things to go over with them and they already gave me a list of things that they would like me to do for them in their absence. I will also be driving to Toronto to drop them off at the airport. Hopefully, the weather is good and that there are no glitches with their flight.

1918, Pauline Deng is in charge of running her uncles antique store until her cousin Theo returns from school and takes over. Unfortunately, her uncle's first wife has arranged for a matchmaker which will bring Pauline back to China. How can she give up her freedom and what will she do when the time comes to marry? What she does not realize is that her cousin is grappling with similar issues, fears and sense of duty towards family.

41. Amanda Skenandore: The Second Life of Mirielle West

When Mirielle goes to the doctor to be treated for a minor burn, the doctor discovers something much more serious. She has leprosy. Determined not to pull her family down with her, she begins using another name. All she can do is hope that her family will still keep in contact with her and get over their prejudices. She is forced to live in isolation at the Carville institution in Louisiana. She begins to find ways to earn some money, forge strong friendships and keeps on hanging on to hope that one day, she will be allowed to go home.

Interesting/quick read. I had no idea that the U.S.A had a "leper colony". I will look for some more reading about Carville. I do believe that the author painted the institution in a better light than than what actually was in reality.

43. Vaishnavi Patel: Kaikeyi

Kaikeyi is the only girl in her family born in a kingdom that sees little worth of females ( besides being subservient and child bearers). Unfortunately, Kaikeyi wants more. She wants to be recognized for her talents and intelligence. To appease her, her twin brother agrees to teach her the art of war and most importantly how to drive a chariot. The Gods are not pleased with Kaikeyi, and refuse to answer her prayers to them. When she is pushed to marry Dasharath and be his third wife she almost gives up hope at being independent. A turn of events makes her bond with her husband strong and she learns to harness her powers.

The first 3/4's of the book was great. Part 4 was not really all that interesting. This was a retelling of the life of a vilified Queen from a Hindu epic ( the Ramayana). There is sorrow, determination, friendship, battle, love and yes, even bit of magic and manipulation in this wonderfully written story.

If you enjoy Madeline Miller or even Sue Lynn Tan's writing, then this one should work for you

44. Laurie Lico Albanese: Hester

1829, Isobel Gamble is forced to start a new life in Salem after her husband tarnishes their reputation and puts them in the poor house. On the long boat voyage, Isobel saves the captains life. She settles in a remote cottage and begins to find work as a seamstress and embroiderer. She soon discovers that Salem and it's people are full of surprises. Although the witch trials have long ended, Isobel must beware of those who still fear magic.

This was very well written. Alternating timelines. 1829 being the dominant one. I was disappointed in the fact that the main protagonist was not aware of what was going on around her ( the danger freed slaves in her community faced from bounty hunters). I also was less than impressed that she was easily wooed into a romantic relationship without questioning the man's character after she was told about his family history. The ending was nice but convenient.

45. Charles Belfoure: The Paris Architect

WW2 Paris- Lucien is a talented architect. He is approached by a man with an interesting proposal. He is tasked with finding spaces in houses that can be converted into hiding places. Lucien finds many clever solutions and is rewarded for his help. The question is, does he believe in the cause enough to risk being caught or is he just placating his appetite for money?

A quick read. Not a lot of technicals about architecture here.....character development was lacklustre.

Happy Monday, Anita. Happy Spring. Enjoy your day off. I plan on doing some volunteering on the trails today. Get some fresh air and see some birds. Our weather is starting to warm up today.

>252 katiekrug: Hi Katie. Thanks! It was nice to relax in the morning- sleep in until 7 and have a leisurely breakfast reading the newspaper and seeing the sun rise.

Did you get a walk in the forest? I hope so - that sounds really nice.

>259 ursula: I did! It was a nice walk in my forest. I checked up on my forest garden to see how the wattle fence has held up. I will need to do some minor repairs when the weather gets better. Still lots of snow around.

Happy Thursday!

It's a foggy/damp and miserable day here today. I have not figured out what I am going to cook for supper. I have been lazy lately. Eating "fast prepared" foods the past three days. I might make a fried fish with rice and green beans. We shall see.

I finished reading a few books. Emily KAto, Spin: Patricia Cornwell and Freezing order.
