Add Books Express in popups and work pages

We have expanded the use of our quick Add Books popup that we originally debuted with the new Recommendations. Internally, this feature is called Add Books Express and it is now available from any work popup on the site (both LT1 and LT2 pages).

Importantly, it is also now available from Work pages directly from the large Add button at the top of the action area on the right. This should make it MUCH easier to add books from work pages for many people. Of course, if you want more control over sources and editions you can still use the standard Add Books page and there is a link available within Add Books Express panel that points there with the respective information about that book filled in for you.

The Add Books Express panel:

That should make some people happy.

I can see myself using this when I just want to make note of a book and don't really care about the edition.

Definitely good for wishlisting.

The Add button isn't translatable.

When you click on the advanced link and it gives you the source options, will it always only be Amazon sources?

Finally found a book that didn't have only Amazon, so that eliminates the question. Though I do ask how many sources will appear under the advanced click?

>7 gilroy: how many sources will appear under the advanced
Up to 3 amazon and up to 3 library sources.

After, admittedly, only 1 attempt, I am loving the new Add widget. I found the old way, a little cumbersome, especially adding from a work page.

Glad for the improvements

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Not being able to add a book easily from a work page (usually just exploring libraries and "that looks cool" so adding to a wishlist) had been a nuisance for years!

I've added about a dozen books using this new button, and most of them have then appeared in my 'Your books' with a rating already filled out. I'm not touching the stars on the pop up, just the 'Add to Your Library' button. Is this user error? A glitch?

Aak! That happened to me too, but I didn't notice until you mentioned it.

I rarely use star ratings, and I certainly don't want them in my catalog for books I don't intend to assign them to. This is a bad crimp in the feature and needs to be fixed! I can't imagine it was the intended design.

We can duplicate this in testing now.
We'll get a fix out for this ASAP.

I love it! This is so quick and easy!

One question, is it possible to configure some defaults for ourselves? Like, I'd like it to default to adding to my "To Read" shelf (currently, it appears to add to both "To Read" and one of the others, I can't recall which).

In 99% of the books I add, that's where I'd like it to go. I will change it if it's meant to go elsewhere right away. (Or maybe I'm asking for too much too soon!?)

Is there a way to dismiss the pop up balloon when it appears in a Talk thread?

When composing a message, I’d been using the touchstone to open the book in another tab. But now the balloon obscures the original message box and I can’t continue composing the message. I’ve lost what I’m writing several times. Other members have mentioned the same frustration.

I'm confused as whether or not this has to do with the Work Popup or the Add Books Express popup.

But, either one can be dismissed by hitting the escape key on the keyboard (on desktop). If you're on a mobile device the Work popup is a little tougher, but tapping anywhere on the page background should release it.

Love the new add functionality. Only Wishlist improvement I would suggest would be, if the tag entry would do the suggestion list, like it does elsewhere. I use a lot of tags, and if it could give me the list of tags as I type, that would prevent typos and future corrections.

>1 conceptDawg: "Internally, this feature is called Add Books Express.."

Is there even a remote possibility this new feature can get its own unique name in the UI? Using the name applied in Settings (Quick Add, which is fine and at least consistent with Quick Edit) on the lightbox and/or button itself? Replace the + in front of Add with the lightning symbol (for fast/quick) similar to the Power Edit symbol for fast edits.

Also making "Advanced" more prominent with a better descriptor (Options instead of Advanced) and moving "For greater control over edition and source, go to Add Books." up and out of the addbooks_express_advanced div?

Fixed. I used to have that problem in Talk routinely, and I see it happen to other people too. I don't know if it's a psycho-heuristic problem with the design or an actual bug that leads people to "reply" to their own post number rather than the previous one.

>27 paradoxosalpha: I too have had that problem of wrong assignments of post numbers. I'd be interested to see how/when it happens, but usually I'm moving quickly through Talk and don't realize it until later. Then I can't remember what I was doing when it happened. FWIW, I don't think it's a bug. I think it's human error. But I'm curious to know more.

Is there a way to add the Date Read as part of the popup? The way I do it now is to add the book and then go into "Your Books", resort it by date and then update it from there. Seems like too many steps.

31SandraArdnas
Mar 18, 2023, 11:52 am

>30 soelo: Not a part of the popup, but you can access the book easier than having to sort and then edit it. There's a number of places showing recently added books, including the home page.

The Add Book page itself has links to the books you've recently added. There's no need to go to any other page

>32 jjwilson61: I thought it was about the new 'add book express', since the standard add book page does not involve any pop up, but yes, add book page is one of the places listing recently added books

Right, I am not going to the Add Book page - I am using the popup.

I am already on the book page when using the popup, so I can just refresh and then edit my book, but it still would be easier if I could add a read date as part of the popup.
