Stone, Arthur L. Following Old Trails. Missoula, MT: Morton John Elrod, 1913. Reprinted several times since and a favorite of POD publishers.

For a year, there appeared in the Sunday edition of The Missoulian newspaper in Missoula, Montana, a regular column by Mr. Stone relating various tales of the old-timers, the white pioneers of Montana. It was a popular column and was deemed of sufficient value to collect them and publish them in book form. The noted University of Montana professor, Morton John Elrod, undertook the task and in 1913, published this book. Prof. Elrod was a man of many talents. He established the Flathead Lake Biological Station on the shores of said lake which is still operated by the University of Montana. He also wrote the first book on Montana's butterflies, The Butterflies of Montana, 1906.

The author of this book, Arthur Stone, was first and foremost a newspaper man and his articles were written, as he said, "... under the high pressure of a daily newspaper office and with no thought that they would ever be called back out of the old files."

I have found it fun to dip into this volume from time to time and see how those old pioneers saw things in their day. You should jump in, too. I think you just might find it worth your time.

Copies of the Stoneydale Press and Pictorial Histories Publishing reprints are available on ABE from time to time and the POD publishers love this book. First editions can fetch up to $450, depending on condition.
