Oh, so cool! Thanks!

I don't know anybody, can someone tell me who are the presenters, the tall lady with magenta hair and the other one?

I love how so many sf authors LOOK like aliens.

Fun Fact: 11 of 19 awards category winners were determined by 1 or 2 votes.

Thanks! I really liked the message from Becky Chambers. And that woman with her dad's autograph book from the Con in 1962 was moving too.

>6 karenb:

Very interesting. Curious that so many entrants would be liked equally.

>7 LolaWalser: That woman was Sarah Pinsker, my favorite working short story writer. (I think I ranked her story third, but was happy to see her win regardless.)

Pinsker's stories are excellent. Glad she won!

The detailed results are here
As you can see the Hugos use ranked choice voting. So on first choice votes A Desolation Called Peace only just has the lead (14 first choices) - it is a decisive winner at the end. In some cases a finalist in second place after first choice votes ends up a clear winner after redistribution.

I can see no evidence that a category was won by 1 or 2 votes.

I've actually tracked down a quote "Hugo Administrator Kat Jones says the final spot in 11 of 19 categories were determined by only one or two votes."

That means that works (plus artists and fans) missed out making the list of finalists by one or two votes. This is noted in the nomination stats I linked to earlier.

I watched a bit on YouTube this morning. I did not watch it live as it was 2am for me when it started. :-) My dedication does not stretch that far into the night.

Thanks, it was zipping along so fast I didn't want to try googling stuff during transmission. Every time I see fandom in action I feel the urge to join the present and get au courant.

What I find interesting is that after the "Dragons" were set up at Dragon Con as an exercise in sour grapes, there is now a fair amount of overlap with the other major awards. I had a sense that Martine would probably pick up the award for best novel, but there was no real way to know. I may have to reread Light from Uncommon Stars in the near future, as I had some issues with it but folks I respect in my local fannish circles were more impressed.
