I notice in the edit book page that the sort "number" is always "5" I've gone in manually and set the order to "start." It isn't a big deal to do that, but I would like to be able to set the default to sort from "start" Can I do that? If so, how do I do that?

The default is based on the book's title. If it starts with an article (A, The, An, etc) that will adjust the default sort to be a number.
If the title doesn't start with an article, that number won't be set.
So if you want the title that start with The to sort as a T instead of something else, then change it. Most people don't want the articles to be used for sorting, which is why it sets as it does.

You have The Zookeeper's Wife listed as 'Zookeeper's Wife (The)'
If you leave the title as it is normally listed, the 5 would be right.
