Audio Play?

I am wondering how to handle audio plays. As long an audio play has an ISBN and is based on a book, I guess there is no issue, and the audio play would be combined with the book.
But what about different scenarios:
- The audio play is based on a book, but there is no ISBN, because it is available by streaming only.
- The audio play is based on a book, but has been re-told and modernized (and has no ISBN). Authors are both the original author and the playwright.
- The audio play is not based on a book (and has no ISBN).
- The audio play is based on one single short story that is part of a book.
What would you consider the correct handling of these cases? Or should I simply refrain from entering such audio books?

No.

An audio play should not be combined with a book.

An *audiobook* should be combined with the paper and ebook versions of the same text, so long as it is not abridged.

But an audio play, a dramatization that is not just reading the words, is separate, even if it's based on a book.

An audio play is not just the text of the book, so it should not be combined with the book on which it based. The primary author of the play would be the director, as is the case with films. It would be a good idea to put audio play in the title, and a work relationship to help prevent combination.

>1 Minthe: You can add any audio play or audiobook that you want to LT. It does not have to have an ISBN and it does not have to be based on a book.

You can always search the site and see if the audio play has already been cataloged by someone else to see how they cataloged theirs. Some other words that are used for similar things are "audio drama" and "dramatization"

I'd recommend including "{audiobook}" or "{audio play}" (as appropriate) to the title of the book so that it can easily be combined or separated from other books or audiobooks as needed.

Very good point! So if I wanted to add an audio play manually, would it be a "sound recording"?

>5 Minthe: I believe marking the media field as "sound recording" will make them easier to spot for combining/separating, but I could be wrong about that. Lots of people don't use the media field at all, so it's not mandatory, and you can change it later if you change your mind.

>5 Minthe: Check all the options when you turn on 'show complete list' under media when adding or editing. There are several options for audiobooks then and several for (other) sound recordings, including streaming which someone mentioned.

Who is behind LibraryThing? Are you an individual? A library? Any other kind of organization?
