OT - Signed copies of fantasy / science fiction at Uncle Hugo's

This might be of interest to those who are into science fiction / fantasy and signed books, though there's also a very small number of crime novels.

The specialist bookshop Uncle Hugo's (fantastic literature) and its crime branch Uncle Edgar's were burned to the ground in the riots following George Floyd's death. I only just found out about it (a year late) when I took a look at their website. I sometimes bought signed books and / or books by small publishers from their online shop, but not that often due to the ever increasing cost of international shipping in recent years. Still, I found some really nice and rare books there over the years.

Since the fire, the owner has been selling a very limited range of signed books from his home, but depending on one's interests, there are some nice choices there. Examples would be signed copies of the Nesfa Press editions of Lois McMaster Bujold's 'Barrayar' novels as well as several Penric-novellas by Subterranean Press. Other authors I've read myself are Joan D. Vinge or Catherine Asaro, but there are several more. The selection is small, but maybe someone here will also find something at the link below. I decided to replace my Barrayar paperbacks with hardcover editions to support the store at least a bit. The owner is still trying to rebuild the business in a new store and earning some money selling his own book collection on Abebooks, some signed books through his old online shop, and a crowdfunding campaign a customer started.

I thought I'd share this here, even though it's off topic, since we do have people who buy science fiction and fantasy, and I think every little bit will help in this case. I never saw the shop myself, but it must have been a really nice place and what happened there is a crying shame.

Very sad story. Do you know if f the hardcover trade editions from Subterranean press are decently made (sewn binding, good enough paper, similar to, say, Everyman’s)?

I just took a look: I've got both standard / trade editions and deluxe editions by Subterranean Press. I looked at a few and both have sewn binding and good paper. I only have one book set from Everyman's so far, and compared to that the paper of Subterranean Press is thicker / nicer. I've always been happy with the quality of their books.

In the case of the Bujold titles, I've got the Deluxe editions, while Uncle Hugo's sells the trade editions. But to my knowledge and based on the other trade editions I've got, the paper and binding are the same. The only differences are leather instead of cloth, different end papers, and the trade editions are usually not signed. But the author has signed these for Uncle Hugo's, so you basically get a signed edition at the price of the trade edition, which seems like a very good deal to me.

Thanks, I decided to order all of the Bujold SP books they had on offer. Quite a good deal for books with sewn binding! Let’s hope shipping to Canada isn’t too expensive!

Wonderful, I hope you'll be happy with your purchase. As I wrote, I don't have the trade editions of the Bujolds, but based on other trade edition titles by the publisher I have I expect the quality to be quite satisfying. The upgrades from trade to deluxe don't seem to be in those areas at all, which speaks for their overall quality.

A friend of mine also ordered these books, but hasn't received them yet - international shipping takes its time. Hopefully the shipping fee to Canada will be good. I started using a forwarding service, Colis Expat, which is cheaper than USPS when it comes to shipping to Europe, but I naturally don't know about shipping to Canada. Still, it can't hurt to mention it just in case.

And in case that's of interest: Just like with the Subterranean Press Bujold trade editions, I don't have the Bujold Nesfa Press titles (in that case yet), but I looked at my copies of Zelazny and Asaro by that publisher. Those also have sewn bindings and good paper (a bit thinner than Subterranean Press, but thicker than my Library of America titles). I'm looking forward to those. I wouldn't have bought them if I hadn't read what happened to Uncle Hugo's, but this seemed like a good opportunity to help them a bit while upgrading some of my collection.

>5 SF-72: Thanks, I’ll look into them! Really appreciate all of the help you’ve provided. I’m one who is happy with less materials as long as the binding is sewn and the paper is ok. I actually am not a fan or overly ornate or heavy books. I always thought trade edition SP books were probably glued! Opens up a lot of possibilities!

>6 RRCBS:

You're very welcome. I just hope that the Penric trade editions aren't different from the others I have, but I really don't expect that to be the case. To my knowledge Subterranean Press generally do sewn bindings, and I've never come across one with poor paper, quite the opposite. They're rarely illustrated and the regular editions don't have slipcases, trade editions aren't signed (Uncle Hugo's being the exception). But they're very good quality in my opinion, just not ornate as you say, so their trade editions might be just what you're looking for.

I frankly didn't expect this kind of quality from Nesfa Press either, I find them quite inexpensive for what you get. I definitely didn't think to check what binding they have before you asked about that here. But I'd seen photos of their Zelazny set, which looks great because it has dustjackets whose spines form a picture, and they've got some interesting titles when it comes to short story collections. I plan on taking a closer look at their offers after I get the Barrayar-novels from Uncle Hugo's.

>2 RRCBS: to add one more data point, I only own one Subterranean Press book, a trade copy of Bradbury's Golden Apples of the Sun. It has a sewn binding.

My friend already has one of the Penric novellas and it has a sewn binding, so I think it's safe to say that this is the norm.
