LibraryThing should allow people to control their notifications. I miss out on a lot of responses to my questions because I am unaware of them. It would be really helpful if I could receive an email notification when someone answers a question I've asked, which I've noticed many other sites do.
Thank you.

If they do take leave of their senses and implement this, the only thing that would keep me participating in Talk would be to make it opt-in. I really, really don't want to get spammed dozens of times a day because someone responds to a high-traffic thread I happened to participate in.

You can click on "Your Posts" in the left column in talk to see just talk threads that you've posted to.

Or even "Started by You" if you're specifically looking for a thread you started.

Or star a topic and go to "Starred Topics" if you want to be absolutely sure you don't miss anything.

I'm going to agree with Lorax. Make it Opt In.

I'm not sure that it could be done even if there weren't good reasons not to do it. Presumably you are thinking about links from the "Reply" feature and/or the linked post number?--but often people don't bother with those, so you would still be missing out on replies.

For a complete picture of replies to one's posts the best advice is what lorax and others said above--mark the threads where you posted stuff that is important for you to follow up on and check them regularly.

Lots of sites let you "subscribe" to a thread (or equivalent), so that you receive a notification each time someone posts in it. It ought be relatively easy to implement, and by being effectively opt-in on the thread level it needn't annoy people like Lorax.

(I don't believe I've ever encountered a site where by default an email notification is sent out each time someone posts in a thread I've posted in, but there's strange stuff out there.)

>7 LolaWalser: Yes, the links from reply where it highlights your username. Some websites notify users when there username is highlighted in some way by another user, for example on Wikipedia typing {{re|LolaWalser}} would make a little box light up at the top of any page you are on, and you could click on it to see where the mention was.

Right--so, you still couldn't be sure of seeing ALL the replies, only those where people linked you. So, hitting "Your Posts" would still give a more comprehensive picture, albeit not taking you directly to the specific replies, but notifying you of new posts in threads you posted in.

Here I suppose one's internet habits come into play, how often you visit Talk, how often you check your e-mail etc. so it's hard to generalise. If you open your e-mail more often than Talk, I can see where e-mail notification would make sense for you. However, if you wanted to be sure you aren't missing something, you'd still have to check Talk yourself from time to time.
