OT: Woodbine Books

I wanted to convey to the community my appreciation for an honest and gracious bookseller in the UK:

I recently purchased a copy of "Goblin Market" (Artists' Choice Editions, 2003) from Woodbine Books. The book was published in two states: 198 copies of the "standard" edition, in printed paper covered boards; and 42 "specials", in quarter leather with a folder of separate signed prints, all in a slipcase.

I ordered a copy of the standard edition, at an attractive price, including free express shipping to the US (!) -- which was the only copy listed on the Woodbine website. After a wait of only a few days, a package arrived at my house containing one of the specials instead.

I emailed Colin Neville, the proprietor, to ask if he'd made a mistake, either in the listing on his website or in sending me the wrong copy of the book, since the price I'd paid was lower than most, even for the standard edition. He replied that, after having accepted and confirmed my order, he had realized that he had no more copies of the standard state in stock, but he did have one of the specials. So, rather than regretfully cancel my order (as most booksellers would have done), he decided to send me the considerably pricier special copy.

A pleasantly surprising experience, to be sure -- I will certainly be keeping an eye on Colin's stock for future purchases!

Now, THAT'S a professional! A true bookseller of the old-fashioned type. A treasure to be appreciated...and used!

I have been a very satisfied customer of Woodbine Books for a number of years. Colin is always a pleasure to deal with, and will often go the extra mile, as emphatically demonstrated by the above post!

Located in Kildare?

Ahhhh...never mind.

I'll add my praise here as well. Only made one purchase a couple years ago, but was very pleased.

>4 Glacierman: It appears there are two booksellers with the same name. The Woodbine Books discussed above (run by Colin Neville) is based in West Yorkshire, UK.

Moreover, kermaier's post above suggests free express shipping to the US may be available.

>6 gilliatt: I browsed Colin's website yesterday, and he does, indeed, offer free shipping to the U. S. on much of his stock. That in itself is a major plus in his favor.
