Find a francophone novel or short story

Years ago, I read a book or short story in a Francophone class (books and stories that were translated in English, originally in French). I read it about 7 or 8 years ago but it is definitely older than that. The story was about a man in a village that died. Every chapter/section was narrated by someone who lived in the village and knew something about the dead man. Each chapter/section told a story about their relationship with the dead man. Some chapters/sections contradicted each other because each narrator had a different relationship with the dead man. I can't remember the title or author and I'm dying to find this story again.
