2 children in a small home, no father (maybe lost at sea?), mother maybe does weaving to earn money. My main interest in the book is the girl hears of a contest for the best weaving of one's original design. She saves her money for special gold thread & works hard, undoing mistakes, but runs out of thread when almost done! Somehow she gets more thread & finishes it.
Kids help with animals on main farmstead, maybe gathering hay. Maybe farm mistress gives them chicks or eggs to raise for themselves. School teacher speaks w/mother about son not studying his letters. At the end I think an uncle is leaving for America & son vows he will emigrate when he can.
This is a chapter book, old when I read it, publ maybe 1920-1950? I remember a few full page illustrations, maybe some line drawings.
