The Gulf between SF and Fantasy? Movies 2021

Always there is the debate between lumpers and splitters over; Is it SF or Fantasy? This argument extends to the moving image realm on occasion but perhaps the best way to negotiate this , contrived on occasion, gap between the two platforms is to just experience the event and see where it takes you.

I followed this path recently after plunking down almost $8 {took a year to decide} to view the new Star Wars incarnation "The Mandalorian". I will review it later I guess but right away I was glad they cast Clint Eastwood in the lead role. Head totally covered by his helmet but still easily recognizable - great call!!

Illustration above provided by another skiffle music group from over the great pond, a relative newcomer, they are trying to push out the old guard band featured for 2020.

Whew!, it was tough fighting my way thru this crowd to post about my latest SF viewings but I somehow managed.

I finished watching The Mandalorian which I found interesting and I was not surprised that it was not Clint Eastwood in the armor suit when the helmet came off but I was disappointed. Not reading any reviews before watching I thought I recognized some Eastwood in the voice of the Mandalorian on occasion but there was definitely Clint in the attitude of the clad character. Several "western" themes pop up in the series with one episode an homage to The Seven Samurai . Luke Skywalker dropping by was well done and I look forward to the next season whenever {Christmas 2021}.

I hate to start off with something I did not particularly like but "Stowaway"" {link to preview} a Netflix film about a voyage to Mars was a little confusing and disappointing. Surprise!, an issue develops on the way to Mars and the crews' attempts to deal with the situation is a rash display of incompetence both in physical skills and in planning.

In real life anyone monitoring their efforts would check the their employment records looking for the "expendable" stamp. Attempting outside the ship excursions for repairs without have a double lanyard on the suit so they would never be unhooked and other really rash displays of bad judgement by people who should be super competent was disconcerting. Maybe this is the crew Elon Musk is envisioning when talks about casualties involved in Mars exploration.

I'm excited for 1899 on Netflix, which is written and produced by the people who created Dark (one of my favorite shows of all time). Filming has just started, but there have been some teaser trailers and cast pictures (in costume) that got the Dark fans fired up.

I'm also excited for Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime, which is supposedly going to smash Game of Thrones' record for per episode cost (although the record will probably be short-lived when the upcoming Lord of the Rings series starts production.) I am a bit nervous, because book adaptations can be tricky, and there are 14 books to adapt! The good news is that a LOT of filler can be cut without sacrificing the central story or main characters.

>7 drmamm: I have seen several mentions of the "new Lord of the Rings" but so far all I can think of is why? I really liked Peter Jackson's version and unless the new series is going to be "R" rated don't understand how Peter's is going to be surpassed. Maybe including Tom Bombadil in the new LOTR series would excite hard core fans but I was totally amazed by the last incarnation of the trilogy

Aha, I looked up info on the new series and found:
"Don't expect a retread of familiar territory. Amazon isn't going to remake the LOTR series that was last seen as several acclaimed Peter Jackson-directed movies. Though this series, like the film saga, will be set in Tolkien's Middle-earth, the company says the original storylines will come from a time period preceding The Fellowship of the Ring."
It should be a good series then if they can reproduce the quality of the predecessor. {As Rosanne Rosanna Dana would say "Never Mind" ;-) } I look forward to Wheel of Time also.

An R-rated LoTR would take it even further from Tolkien, don't you think?

I think the pacing of a television season per book would allow for an adaptation more faithful to the original in terms of both pacing and detail, but the info you found suggests that's not what they're doing.

I watched a short 18 minute film at Dust (link to movie) called Shaman that was interesting. It is kind of a fusion of SF and fantasy/magic. Link to IMDB review

I have been waiting to comment on a fantasy review by using a technical term I picked up while skulking in the upper brow "Literary Snobs" LT section. It looks like I will not have the opportunity to use "elf humpers " any time soon however.....

Rider Of Another Mortal is another good short at DUST, clocking in at 17 minutes or so. Kind of a familiar theme in SF but well executed as most work at DUST.

I remarked to my Other Reader that my own decades-ago reading of Foundation had been notable among sf for its lack of visualization. There's hardly any way to contradict my imagining of those stories, and they are an amazing blank slate for visual design. Too bad it will only be available on a service I don't use (AppleTV+). I watched the first two episodes of Apple's movie series take on Asimov's Foundation and while entertaining it seems to take a time to become immersed in it. It has been very many years since I read the series but I seem to remember a lot of detail to wade through in the first novel before it became engrossing. Oddly that seems to be a point missing in the movie as I thought I remembered Asimov explaining the concept of a space elevator and other facts of science throughout the book whereas in the film the elevator is just presented as a part of the experience. I seemed to have forgotten many of the characters other than Hari Seldon and Daneel? the eternal robot who comes along later evidently. I guess the characters become more defined as the 10 part series progresses.

I went to wiki to review some info and found this interesting statement: "One key feature of Seldon's theory, which has proved influential in real-world social science, is the uncertainty principle of sociology: if a population gains knowledge of its predicted behavior, its self-aware collective actions become unpredictable."

Getting into the mood for the upcoming spooky spectacular Halloween here in the USA I thought I would mention a few Netflix videos I watched recently that might fit the occasion.

Katla , a movie series filmed in Iceland, seems to have a problem with golem like people crawling out of volcanic deposits from still active volcanoes. The locals have a hard time adapting to the newcomers in the sparsely populated area.

The I-Land is VERY reminiscent of the "Lost" series but has some good moments. Once again people with no memory walking about on a beach.,

Katee Sackoff using a Captain Kirk technique to deal with aliens.

I watched the entire 2cd season of Another Life this past weekend and it has improved immensely since season one. A lot of casualties in the crew but there seems to be an at least temporary resolution to the "benevolent" invasion of tessellated alien space ships. Not wanting to give much away but the story line appears to be running a pattern similar to Star Trek & that is meant as a compliment.

I have not seen Dune yet but on an NPR review there was a short quote given of one of the people who made the movie {director Villeneuve I believe} who said he spent the last 3 years of his life tailoring the movie to the big screen with a vast amount of nuance that will not be evident in another format. This was during a discussion of how outraged the makers of the film were at it being streamed the same time as the movie theater release.

'Dune': A sweeping, spectacular spice-opera — half of one, anyway
Is a great review of Dune on NPR which gives a short review of the film for those who have never read the book and another review for those who have i.e. " If you've done Dune — you've read a book or six, and/or know and love David Lynch's hot mess of a film from 1984"

Doomed 'Dune' Was Generations Ahead Of Its Time
......and from the same source, NPR, a short article and a more extensive audio review of Alejandro Jodorowsky's famously never made version of Dune. A quote from the article "Everybody from that team went on to go make Alien with Ridley Scott"

I too was amazed how well this movie was written to give you the gist of the story - not simplified at all, but enough for you to know what its about, and perhaps enough for people to either read the book or rewatch the movie again and again to enjoy the pacing, the amazing cinematography and the splendid acting from all involved. I agree with the reviewer, that was a good a place to end the movie, and I can't believe I have to wait two years to see what he does with the second part, which is a good 3/4 of the book.

and can I just say that the final meeting between paul and chani was so full of chemistry you could feel the sparks off the screen. Too bad Games of Thrones didn't try that with Daeneras and Jon Snow.....guess I'll spend my time rereading the book for two years.

>55 Karlstar: I’m afraid I am getting caught up in the WOT hype. I’m looking forward to binging on the entire Amazon series over Xmas. I have avoided reading Jordan’s books because I didn’t want to be disappointed as I was with Sword of Shannara. It just didn’t stand up to LoTR or to the Thomas Covenant series or Narnia. But the commentary I have been reading about the WOT books in anticipation of this Amazon series makes me feel that I at least need to give it a chance and read Eye of the World. It’s on my TBR list for 2022.

57drmamm
Nov 22, 2021, 2:55 pm

>56 Neil_Luvs_Books: You have probably heard this from WoT book readers, but The Eye of the World was intentionally written as a LoTR clone, because, according to Jordan, he would have had a hard time getting it published. The parallels are obvious, and this turns off a lot of initial readers (especially LoTR fans - like me!) However, the story comes into its own in books 2-4 and the scope widens considerably. In fact, the ever-widening scope takes over the pacing in a bad way in the middle third (especially books 7-10), which is very tough to get through. The last four books really tie everything up though and it's a banger of an ending.

The writing is florid and repetitive, and Jordan makes it clear he likes breasts, braids, calves and skirts, which can also turn off fans of much more polished authors like Tolkien. IMHO, it helps further separate WoT from LoTR (in a good way). It becomes more about the journey than the end, and you literally get to see the five central characters grow up in front of you.

Now that I have time to process the first three episodes, I think that my biggest frustration is that it is shot like a TV show, whereas GoT was shot like a movie. If Rafe & Co really want to capture the scope, they need to up the production values and make it look like a movie - they certainly have the budget for it!

58Neil_Luvs_Books
Nov 22, 2021, 5:34 pm

>57 drmamm: Thanks for the heads up about Eye of the World and the fact that WoT comes into its own in the immediately following books. I’ll keep that in mind. As long as Eye of the World is not as wooden as Sword of Shannara I’ll probably be able to persevere beyond the first book of WoT.

I just mainlined the Netflix "live action" version of Cowboy Bebop and really enjoyed the series. I was skeptical during the first episode but hooked by the second. I had read about the comic & animated versions of Bebop but never actually watched or read the comics.

As stated above I can't compare this to the comic but the "Live actors" version should be up for multiple awards of some type IMOHO. The jazzy sound track is great - I don't know if it is all original scoring or not but combined with the editing it nails the transitions from scene to scene with sharp bursts of staccato horns and rhythmic bass lines.
The constant cliches , in both the music, scenes and dialogues were off putting at first but then they all fell together into a tight story for each episode. The series is full of "hidden surprises" (like the call letters for the starship Enterprise as the serial number for an important file) which I am certain I did not catch all of but are an intriguing subtle trivia quiz throughout the shows. The characters stay focused on the very stylized acting used and still manage to present a compelling story that draws you in.
