An interesting look at high tech industry and the narcissists who run them.

16LoisB
Editado: Jan 4, 6:49pm

2. Million Dollar Staircase ***.5 - COMPLETED

This is basically a murder mystery with conscience. It is about an eminent domain fight to save a marina. It’s loosely based on a real eminent domain abuse in South Carolina.

3. How to Lie your way into a Lady's heart by Edith Byrd * DNF

This book seemed to be dragging so I switched my Kindle from displaying location to displaying page numbers, only to find that I was on Page 288 and I was only 50% done. If the book was interesting, I might have kept going but for 250 pages I'd been reading about a titled young man and his friend who switched names when attending a ball. Of course, they both met and fell madly in love with 2 titled sisters. Then around Page 260, the author apparently forgot who was who and had the wrong man out walking with the wrong sister, thus earning my rarely given single star! I skimmed the rest.

4. Sorry, Not Sorry **

Well, I tried reading this for the January RandomCAT of humor! It was billed as a rom-com. It's rare that I find a book that makes me laugh out loud. Some early books in the Stephanie Plum series did - Grandma Masur was a hoot! But, it's rare! So, I embarked on this challenge with some skepticism , and chose Sorry, Not Sorry due to its subtitle: The perfect Laugh out Loud romantic comedy. It was all rom, no com from my perspective. I think it may be the thespian in me - comedy needs to be delivered correctly in order to be funny.

>28 PaulCranswick: It was a re-read for me. I am facilitating the discussion for one of my book clubs in February so I wanted to brush up on the story. I seem to remember liking it better the first time. One of these years, I will go to the Zora Neale Hurston celebration in Eatonville FL since it is less than one hour away from me, but not this year due to the pandemic.

BTW I try to rate books on a reasonably normal bell curve, but mine is definitely skew to favorable side, so 3 is probably average.

Fev 17, 10:39am

19. Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents ****

I struggled to read this book and to rate it. Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns was an excellent book. The topic was important and she told the stories of those involved in the Great Migration very well. This book was so different. The first third of the book is about as compelling as a graduate dissertation on a sociological topic. But, I was determined to finish it, even if it meant skimming some sections in the middle of the book. In the final third of the book, Wilkerson did what she does best - she told stories of people.

Wilkerson addresses the topic of a caste system and makes the case that we have such a system in the United States. For this reason, I gave the book a 4 star rating. It is too important to put aside.

46. Death at SeaWorld ****
I was gripped by p.11 when I got chills reading about the death of trainer Dawn Brancheau at SeaWorld Orlando in February 2010. I looked forward to a compelling, quick read. Unfortunately, that wasn't to be. The book is very detailed about the history and fate of killer whales in captivity, and the story ends prior to the Secretary of Labor v. Sea World of Florida trial. The Epilogue covers the trial. I could not read the story without jumping on the anti-captivity bandwagon.

I have to like the main character in the novels I read. This story had no one that fit met that requirement.
