Hatanu's Literary Journey (2021)

Hey there, nice to meet you! I am Hatanu. I am relatively new to the site and the group, although I have been lurking for a bit beforehand. I noticed that a number of users post about their individual reading journeys and book lists. So, as you can see, I have decided to give it a try myself. Without further ado, here we go.

Welcome to my personal Literary Journey 2021. I hope to start this year off on the right foot, and read as much as I can. I do not have a specific numerical goal in mind, as this year will be my benchmark year. We will see how much I will read. I was not an avid reader growing up, but I am hoping to change that. The list isn't in any meaningful order, but rather a pool of planned books I intend on reading through at some point, presumably this year/decade. Either way, here is the initial list, which will likely be updated and expanded upon:

Hatanu's Reading Pool 2021

  • The Time of Contempt by Andrzej Sapkowski

  • Baptism of Fire by Andrzej Sapkowsi

  • The Tower of the Swallow by Andrzej Sapkowski

  • The Lady of the Lake by Andrzej Sapkowski

  • Season of Storms by Andrzej Sapkowski

  • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

  • The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien

  • The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien

  • The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien

  • The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro

  • The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff, Jonathan Haidt

  • The Structures of Everyday Life: Civilization & Capitalism 15th-18th Century (vol.I) by Fernand Braudel

  • Designing Virtual Worlds by Richard A. Bartle

  • (to be updated...)

>1 Hatanu: Hi, welcome to the Green Dragon and LT! I’ve found the reading journal process to be a lot of fun, so I hope you will also.

I look forward to reading your thoughts about what you read this year. The Witcher series is one I want to get to eventually, although I don’t expect it to be very soon. I played the first Witcher video game several years back.

Welcome! From your reading list, you will fit in here just fine. PGGBs on the bar, and there's cheese.

Very nice to see a new member start a reading thread! Welcome. I read all the threads, but only comment now and then.

>2 majkia: Thank you for the welcome and the wishes! Same to you, happy new year! Hopefully this one's better than the last, or not worse at least.
>3 YouKneeK: Pleasure to meet you and thanks for the welcome. I will say, The Witcher books have been a blast to read so far. Actually I intend on reading through
all the books before playing through the games myself, so we'll see when that happens. Don't know if it will be soon. Happy New Year and best of luck with your reading!
>4 haydninvienna: Thank you, thank you! Reminds me that I ought to add "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" to the list, too! The cheese is much appreciated as well. :)
>5 MrsLee: Of course, we'll see where this thread goes. I will do my best to maintain it along with my reading habits. Comments, whether frequent or infrequent, are appreciated either way. Thank you for the welcome!

Welcome to the pub! I look forward to having a new thread to read.

I have read 5 out of your reading pool, but am rather behind you on the Sapkowski. Which order did you read the early ones in - original publication order, or the order in which they were published in English?

>14 -pilgrim-: Thanks for the welcome and kind words! I read the earlier ones as follows: "The Last Wish", "Sword of Destiny", and then "Blood of Elves" literally the last day of 2020. I'm likely going to read "Season of Storms" last.

>15 Hatanu: I may join you in reading some more Sapkowski in 2021. I suspect that I should finish the short stories before continuing with the novels though.

I have played some of the first Witcher game. I got the impression that the books at as spoilers for the game (and vice versa).

>16 -pilgrim-: Nice! I wish you the best. I feel that the short stories set up the world and characters nicely before the plot in the novels begins to take hold. From what I gather, I could be wrong, the games take place after the books. So you're right in a way. The games reference events in the books, whereas the books provide the some context for what happens in the games. Seeing as I haven't played the games, I can't speak with certainty. I'm hoping to play them as a self-reward, also seeing how they adapted the world/characters, and understanding the book references in the games. Don't really know what's better: starting with the books or the games. It's certainly a weird conundrum.

>17 Hatanu: The games come in chapters. I played the first chapter in the first game, but then the politics started coming more to the forefront, so I halted.
I had read some before I started, which certainly made the lore that one painstakingly discovers, rather obvious.
