Does Location Matter?

Do you ever pick a book solely because of its geographical setting?

I've realized lately that I've been doing this for some time, without realizing it. And it's settings I'm familiar with, not exotic places I'd like to visit.

Where (and when) do you go in your books?

I've never chosen a book that way, however, a good friend of my late wife once gave her a copy of Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods to read one summer. So, I read it, to occupy my mind while on our treadmill. I got about eight pages to the mile.
The book was a chronicle of his attempt to hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail.
I once hiked part of the AT that runs through Sky Meadows State Park in Virginia. (My first wife and I had bicycled there from NJ, on our way to Pensacola.) And that is approximately where Bill had decided to suspend his adventure. Quite some time later, he resumed the trek, in Massachusetts, I think, and completed the rest of the northerly route. So, he completely skipped the only other parts of the AT I've been on -- NJ, NY, and Connecticut.

Normally, I don't choose a book that way. But this year I was involved in a category challenge that required a geo location each month. I loved it and I enjoyed reading from places I don't usually, like Africa or Latin America. Next year I'm going to be more intentional about my reading and try to read more globally. Still, about 80% of my reading will probably end up being historical fiction set in Europe or the U.K.

England and Italy for me. I think I would enjoy living in either place; though I’ve never been out of the USA.
