What would make for a revival?

Out 8, 2020, 2:37 pm

As the long-absent creator, I was wondering if the members (those still around) have any views on how this group could be useful or interesting?

Discussions of notable recent books? I'm thinking Deneen's Why Liberalism Failed, but I'm sure there are plenty of others.

Discussions of historical events through the lens of political philosophy? The fall of the Roman Republic... the Glorious Revolution, etc.

Debates on certain issues?

Potentially picking an article (new or classic) and doing a collective reading.

Individual articles could be selected with an eye toward a specific debate or issue, as suggested in >1 gabriel: ... but the article would add focus and a common starting point.

Ideally the article would be available online without subscription. But listing common books in which they might be found could help LTers get their own copy, whether from their own library or via InterLibrary Loan.

Speaking only for myself, I'm not looking for another reading group; but perhaps others are?

At any rate, thanks for putting your head above the parapet and expressing interest in the group again.

It's true that an online reading group requires a commitment and many seem to have that offline. I'm likely to follow / lurk whatever threads are posted here, but the online discussion group is something I've a particular interest in. I concede to not having enough motivation to run it, though!

Do you have particular areas of interest?

I'm also curious whether people are more interested in the more theoretical (maybe like Natural Law and Natural Rights) or the more topical and practical (to take examples from my recent reading, Deneen's Why Liberalism Failed and Ross Douthat's The Decadent Society).

I'll wait to see if more LTers indicate their interest generally. I have a broad enough interest to be motivated if something got going. Overall, I'd say I'm more inclined to theoretical and less to topical / practical, except (and this is a "big but") by way of illustration or focus.

Well, maybe I'll start a discussion on Douthat's Decadent Society, as I've read it recently, even if it's a little less theoretical than most things we'd discuss.

Hope others will chime in if they're interested.
