Though the message subject might seem rather cryptical, it means what it says, for "read != read" indeed.
Clearing up things : "start/countinue reading" (read) != "has been read" (read). Though both may look the same in writing, the meaning is different (as is the pronounciation, for that matter). The former might be an infinitive or an imperative, while the latter is a past participle.
This means "read" cannot be translated without dealing with the context. No problem, translators should look at the context and act--i.e. translate--accordingly. Unless the context cannot be know, that is, or, worse, one single text snippet is used on different pages in different contexts, as is the case with "read" indeed.
Over here, in LT Talk with the messages, its meaning is "has been read",where as on the other hand, at i.a. a Group Zeitgeist page, as e.g. with Group: Translating LibraryThing? (General Talk) | LibraryThing:, in the right hand side column (Recent reviews), its meaning is "continue reading".
Problems arise when both meanings are combined into one single text snippet to be translated, as is the case now.
Thus, the right meaning being translated for the former, when visiting the latter page, it is obvious the translation was erroneous and is to be corrected. Nice job. Until one revisits the former page. Oops, an erroneous translation to be corrected. Nice job and well done. Until one repays a visit to the latter page, ...

Thanks Tim! I already attempted to translate "read" and promptly got the wrong one translated. I corrected it again and now it works on the Talk pages, at least. Will go hunting for other occurrences of the word to see if it is all right.
