BOOK #79

The Truth About Alice by Jennifer Mathieu

Book off the shelf.

The truth about Alice is that she did not do all those terrible things that the star quarter back and his co-team member told a few who then told more than a few who then told the entire school, leaving Alice to fend for herself.

Even her best friend, chose to add a few lies to the fire of lies. Alice is strong, but even so it is difficult to stand tall when all around all trashing you.

This is a tale of how rumors start and seem to be the truth.

A wonderful book of teen aged immaturity, and the need to belong, even if another is harmed.

Happy New Thread, Linda! That vintage toy topper got me to look at more Gennedy Spirin illustrations and you're right, he's outstanding.

The Truth About Alice addresses a behavior that really bothers me. We see it at all levels, including our present government, don't we.

Hello to all! I am continually amazed at the strength of this incredible group. Please forgive a message in group form. I am in beaver creek Ohio with my daughter and family. Normally, I come here Christmas week, but they are going to Disneyworld shortly after Christmas day. I do not have the stamina for Disneyworld, and honestly, I am disneyout.

Roni. Thanks for the link regarding illustrated books.

I can't seem to concentrate and find a book I like. I have started and not finished three or four while I am here. The weather is cold, the land is flat., and the wind whips the cold along. I return home Saturday.

Thanks to everyone for your visit.

Hi to all. I arrived home Saturday night. I was foolish and picked up my 41 pound suitcase. I am paying for my not-so-good sense of judgement. I haven't been out of the house since. The weather is old, rainy with now-and then snow flurries.

It will be a low- key Christmas. I have received invitations or
Christmas day, of wonderful people saying "I don't want you alone on your first Christmas without Will. It brings tears to my eyes when people are so very thoughtful.

BOOK OF THE SHELF

The Life and Death of Charlie St. Cloud by Ben Sherwood

Well written and thought full, this is a story of two brothers, one younger boy who was suddenly killed because of a car accident at the hands of his older brother. As the younger child was dying, Charlie made a promise that the would meet to play softball every night at dusk.

Accustomed to being among the dead, Charlie works at a cemetary for many years, and has experience with those who die but hang on to life.

When Charlie falls in love, he is torn about the inability to meet his brother every night.

A thoughtful book, I can recommend.

BOOK #81 OF 2019

The Girl Before by Rena Olsen

This is a very interesting book regarding human trafficking. When authorities storm the home of Clara and her husband, they are separated. He is taken to jail; she is taken to a place of safety where she can be questioned.
The story goes back and forth between chapters titled Now, and Then.

Usually I don't like books that change direction with each chapter, but this one worked. Clara loves the son of Mama and Papa G. With her marriage to Glen comes additional responsibilities of the various buildings on the compound.

Slowly, she comes to realize that as the caretaker of children and young adults that they are sold to the highest bidder. The children are kept under close supervision. And, punishment is meted violently by Glen when he believes children do not obey. They dare not escape.

Whereas Clara, whose real name is Diana, reused to cooperate with the police and psychologist assigned to her, eventually, she realizes that she was brainwashed, and like all the little girls she oversaw, she too was abducted.

Dealing with this difficult subject, the writer does an excellent job of carefully uncovering the layers of brainwashing.

Recommended.

BOOK OFF THE SHELF

Sukey and the Mermaid by Robert D San Souci

As always, the illustrations of Pinkney are detailed and Caldecott winning deservable.

Cultivated from a number of sources such as West Africa. Caribbean folklore, it is noted that the term "Water Mother" is another name for Mermaid. I've read many of books containing the beautiful, creative works of Pinkney, most of which contain African American history.

In this story, a young girl named Sukey is misused by her mother's husband called "Mister Jones." Mister Jones beats Sukey's mother and makes Sukey perform all inside and outside tasks. Hoeing the land, pulling weeds from the property property. Mr. Jones is not shy in threatening Sukey to work faster lest she is whipped with the stick.

One day Sukey grows weary, throwing down the hoe, she ran until she found the beach. Somewhere she heard of, and memorized the song

Thee, thee, down below,
Come to me, Mama Jo!!"

When a very beautiful dark-skinning mermaid appears from the Ocean, Sukey befriends her and is taken on a trip down, down, down to the ocean where she sees marvelous trinkets and gold coins from a long ago pirate ship. Sukey, receives a gold coin rom Mama Jo. Taking it home only leads to greed and threats from Mister Jones that she must go back and demand more. The step father and Sukey's mother take a boat out by the shore and call Mama Jo. When she appears, they try to capture her with a net. As a result, Mama Jo does not listen to Sukey's repeated calls.

One night in a dream, Mama Jo appears to Sukey promising to take her down to live with her beneath the sea. Missing Mama Jo, and weary of all the whippings and hard labor, she allows Mama Jo to hold on to her and to travel the deep places in the sea. Soon Sukey misses the sun, the feel of soil, and sounds of voices.

Granting her wish, Sukey is told by the mermaid that she will be sought by many, but only should answer the the love of Dembo. Afraid Dembo will get all the coins, Mr. Jones steals them, and in addition he kills him.

Mama Jo agrees to bring Dembo back from death. Hereater, Sukey finds happiness. Sukey never again sees the mermaid, except for the sight of green scales, and the sound of laughter far out to the sea,

BOOK OF THE SHELF

Tops & Bottoms with text and illustrations of Janet Stevens

Bear inherited a lot of money and property from his hard-working parents. He is lazy and lives in a house where the porch is sagging the the shutters are crooked from weather conditions. One of the members of the rabbit family gambled his land away to the turtle who then sold it to the bear or a profit.

Destitute, the rabbits originally had no way to cultivate their food. Rabbits made deal with lazy bear that they would cultivate the front part of the the house and save the produce to the bear; They cultivated the back plot and the full crop would be theirs.

Purposely taking care of their plot, the bear complained that the top part did not yeild as much.

The next year, the land distribution was changed to a switch of top and bottom portions.

The rabbits carefully cultivated the middle portion to best.

Thereater, the bear was no longer lazy. He planted out in the hot sun, and pulled weeds all summer time.

BOOK NUMBER 86 OF THE YEAR 2019
BOOK OF THE SHELF

Grandma's Gift by Eric Velasquez

When Eric's teacher gave his grandmother a note about the holiday project of visiting a special exhibit at the Metropolitan Art Museum, it brought a new adventure. Eric's grandmother never traveled from El Barrio, NY. Eric enjoyed being with her as she yearly took him to the local La Marqueta (fresh food market).

As they once again obtained ingredients for pasteles, a traditional Puerto Rican dish made primarily at Christmas time, the market was busy with sights and sounds of the season.

Traveling to the museum was yet another adventure. As they went up the huge flight of stairs to the second floor, they found the painting Eric's teacher recommended. The portrait of Juan de Pareja is one of the most prized collections of the museum. Paying a large sum of 5.5 million in 1971, set a record for the acquisition cost of a painting.

This famous painting by Diego Velazquez remains a prized portrait at the museum.

Researching the painting and observing it closely resonated with Eric and affirmed his love of art. For Christmas, Eric's grandmother gave him a set of colored artistry pencils and a large sketchbook, which started the opening of the door of recognition that Eric did indeed possess talent.

Filled with the holiday customs of Eric's Puerto Rican heritage, and the strong family bond, makes this a very special book.

BOOK OFF THE SHELF

The Christmas Cat by Efner Tudor Holmes with illustrations of Tasha Tudor

On Christmas Eve, a gray cat, lost in the snow, abandoned when his original owners moved without him, it is now winter. As a blizzard occurs in the forest, his paws are frozen with ice. Drifts so large, it is difficult for him to navigate, making him vulnerable.

As the sound of bells rings throughout the forest, the animals all hurry to approach the two horses pulling a sled and the man with a beard who has large baskets of berries and nuts. As the animals gather to eat their much needed meal, the little cat is noticed.

He is taken to a small arm where two boys live. The cat becomes their most prized gift of the season. And, the cat no longer need to worry about abandonment, cold and starvation.

I never cease to marvel at the artistry of Tasha Tudor. Her images o the animals, in particular the eyes of the deer and fox, are very real looking.

BOOK NUMBER 87

BOOK OFF THE SHELF

As Good As Anybody by Richard Michelson with illustrations of Raul Colon.

This is the amazing story of two men, advocating for non violence even though they and families received terrible cruelty and violence.
On March 21, 1965, Abraham Joshua Heschel, a prominent Rabbi, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, long a proponent of rights for blacks, joined hands to cross the bridge in Selma, Alabama. This action was for the voting rights of blacks.

Heschel came to America, fleeing the hatred of Jews at the hands of the brutal Nazi's. Sadly, while he escaped, his family was murdered in the Holocaust.

MLK, Jr. was a very strong leader and advocate for the rights of blacks...and all.

Both men were told by their father's when they were little, "You are as good as anybody." With that in mind, arms were linked and the long journey continued.
