Homeless people will be easy target for MAGA meanies...

Fox & Friends is currently pushing the idea that homeless people are like vermin

Trump’s feud with California over emissions standards and homelessness, explained
Aaron Rupar@atrupar | Sep 19, 2019

...Trump seems to view homelessness not as a humanitarian issue but an aesthetic problem for rich people. On Tuesday, he told reporters that homeless people are ruining our “best highways, our best streets, our best entrances to buildings, where people in those buildings pay tremendous taxes, where they went to those locations because of the prestige.”

...Fox News has recently made portraying homeless people as something akin to vermin a major focus of its programming, and in this case as in many others, Trump’s views seem to be influenced by his favorite channel...

...As anybody who has spent time in San Francisco can attest, homelessness is a real and growing issue there and in other big cities in California...

...city officials point out that there’s no silver bullet to solving the problem and that they’re doing what they can to address it.

With regard to Trump’s claim that homeless people are polluting the water in the San Francisco Bay Area, the city’s mayor, London Breed, called it “ridiculous.”

“To be clear, San Francisco has a combined sewer system, one of the best and most effective in the country, that ensures that all debris that flow into storm drains are filtered out at the city’s wastewater treatment plants,” she said in a statement. “No debris flow out into the bay or the ocean.”

Breed announced a plan last year to open 1,000 new shelter beds by 2020 and is seeking to pass a $600 million bond to provide services and affordable housing for people at risk of homelessness. In her statement responding to Trump, Breed alluded to the bad faith involved in Trump attacking her city for not finding some sort of silver bullet.

“In San Francisco, we are focused on advancing solutions to meet the challenges on our streets, not throwing off ridiculous assertions as we board an airplane to leave the state,” she said...

Man tried to set sleeping homeless man on fire and took photos of the blaze, police say
Joshua Bote | Sept. 25, 2019

A California man faces arson and attempted murder charges after allegedly lighting a homeless man's cardboard encampment on fire while the man was sleeping in it.

...a homeless man awoke to the smell of smoke and found the cardboard box encampment he was sleeping under was on fire. The fire was set near the Museum of Neon Art (Glendale, California — less than 10 miles north of downtown Los Angeles)

The man unsuccessfully tried to put it out with bottled water, but the fire was later put out by the city's fire department.

A nearby business recorded footage of (Richard Smallets, 32) intentionally setting fire to the boxes...(also accused of taking pictures of the blaze)

A disdain for the poor is one of the hallmarks of Trump's rather short political career. If there is anyone out there weak or vulnerable in any way he's first in line to harass them. People should understand that biologically they are really no different from anyone else and that they themselves could have been born outside our country or under the right circumstances they could be wandering around homeless too. Trump basically is an arrogant and vicious bully and one day hopefully he will see the inside of a small prison cell. He's done more than enough to earn it.

>3 margd: The NYT offers more context to the story. The perpetrator, Richard Smallets, is also homeless. So possibly this incident is more about mental illness than a hate crime.

And now that the Trump has begun verbal and policy targeting the homeless, can they be considered a class of people that warrant protection from hate crime? The same article lists a few other recent incidents targeting the homeless.

Armed Militias Are Taking Trump’s Civil War Tweets Seriously

Here’s the money quote from that thread. This is the truth. This is where we are. We ARE on the verge of a HOT civil war. Like in 1859. That’s where we are. And the Right has ZERO trust or respect for anything the left is doing. We see THEM as illegitimate too.@StewartRhodesOK

....If the Democrats are successful in removing the President from office (which they will never be), it will cause a Civil War like fracture in this Nation from which our Country will never heal.” Pastor Robert Jeffress, @FoxNews

...Some observers may say that the tweets of both the president and the Oath Keepers are simply hyperbole. But the militia movement has shown that it will take action based on the president’s statements. His “civil war” comments were phrased conditionally—dependent on “the Democrats” attempting to remove him from office. State officials and law enforcement, however, do not have to wait for that condition to be fulfilled—or for the president to post new tweets that militias may interpret as calling them to arms—to tackle the potential threat posed by militias. Governors may issue cease and desist orders based on their state constitutions, law enforcement may initiate investigations based on federal and state criminal statutes, and the public may report instances of current law-breaking by militia members. Authorities would not sit idly by while foreign forces prepare for potential violence against other Americans, and they should not sit idly by while rogue private armies do the same.

‘Stunning in ugliness & tone’: Trump denounced for attacking Somali refugees in Minnesota
Allyson Chiu | Oct. 11, 2019

In Rep. Ilhan Omar’s district, Trump’s attacks have made her more popular

For roughly six minutes Thursday night, President Trump ...widened his attack to target Somali refugees in Minnesota, a group that includes Omar, a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in the East African country. He promised rally attendees, who booed loudly at the mention of the state’s Somali residents, that he would “give local communities a greater say in refugee policy and put in place enhanced vetting and responsible immigration controls.”

“As you know, for many years, leaders in Washington brought large numbers of refugees to your state from Somalia without considering the impact on schools and communities and taxpayers,” Trump said as some in the crowd jeered, adding, “You should be able to decide what is best for your own cities and for your own neighborhoods, and that’s what you have the right to do right now, and believe me, no other president would be doing that.”

...Two days before the 2016 presidential election, then-candidate Trump told the crowd at a campaign rally in Minneapolis they had “suffered enough” as a result of “filthy refugee vetting” that had allowed an influx of Somalis into their state. He promised that if he became president, refugees would not be admitted “without the support of the community where they are being placed.”

...In recent years, Trump also reportedly “raged” at then-acting homeland security secretary Elaine Duke, “asking why he could not ban refugees from ‘f------ Somalia,’” New York Times reporters Julie Hirschfeld Davis and Michael D. Shear wrote in their new book, “Border Wars: Inside Trump’s Assault on Immigration.”

Davis and Shear noted that Trump and senior policy adviser Stephen Miller “seemed to have a particular dislike for Somalia, often citing it or its nationals when they spoke of the potential dangers of refugees and other immigrants.”...

...Omar...retweeted a former Minnesota state representative who pointed out that Trump supporters have been responsible for making death threats against her and for mailing bombs to Democrats...

Macabre Video of Fake Trump Shooting Media and Critics Is Shown at His Resort
Michael S. Schmidt and Maggie Haberman | Oct. 13, 2019 Updated Oct. 14, 2019

WASHINGTON — A video depicting a macabre scene of a fake President Trump shooting, stabbing and brutally assaulting members of the news media and his political opponents was shown at a conference for his supporters at his Miami resort last week, according to footage obtained by The New York Times.

Several of Mr. Trump’s top surrogates — including his son Donald Trump Jr., his former spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis — were scheduled to speak at the three-day conference, which was held by a pro-Trump group, American Priority, at Trump National Doral Miami...

The video, which includes the logo for Mr. Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign, comprises a series of internet memes. The most violent clip shows Mr. Trump’s head superimposed on the body of a man opening fire inside the “Church of Fake News” on parishioners who have the faces of his critics or the logos of media organizations superimposed on their bodies. It appears to be an edited scene of a church massacre from the 2014 dark comedy film “Kingsman: The Secret Service.”...

I'm surprised actually there are no mentions of Mexicans being eaten by alligators or electrocuted by his wall. This guy is one sick individual. This is what he'd really like to do. Reminds me a bit actually of Hitler who after the von Stauffenberg assassination attempt personally played a part in many of the executions of the plotters. There were people hung to the point of death several times over on a stage as he watched their naked bodies (all the while a crew filmed so he could watch over and over) from the audience.

More or less a fantasy snuff film. Poor John McCain--wants to kill him a second time. Wonder what Meaghan is going to think of that. She's defended Trump enough. This is at the same place by the way he wants next year's G-7 or G-8 if he can get his pal Putin back in. What a fucking asshole Trump is. There isn't really much more to say. A fucking ghoul.

The numbers--of the activity, and of the death threats--are mind-boggling.

Revealed: Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib targeted in far-right fake news operation

A mysterious Israeli-based group uses 21 Facebook pages to churn out more than a thousand coordinated fake news posts per week to more than a million followers around the world. It milks the traffic for revenue from digital advertising.

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, who earlier this year became the first Muslim women to serve in the US Congress, have been singled out for vicious attacks by the coordinated effort.

Somali-born Omar is the most frequent target. She has been mentioned in more than 1,400 posts since the network began two years ago. Tlaib has been mentioned nearly 1,200 times. Both totals are far higher than any other member of Congress.

Funny how no one seems to care about that third Muslim in the Congress, the guy?

The Cruelty of a Trump Christmas
Paul Krugman | Dec. 23, 2019

Republicans aren’t Scrooges — they’re much worse.
By Trump-era standards, Ebenezer Scrooge was a nice guy.

It’s common, especially around this time of year, to describe conservative politicians who cut off aid to the poor as Scrooges; I’ve done it myself. But if you think about it, this is deeply unfair to Scrooge.

For while Dickens portrays Scrooge as a miser, he’s notably lacking in malice. True, he’s heartless until he’s visited by various ghosts. But his heartlessness consists merely of unwillingness to help those in need. He’s never shown taking pleasure in others’ suffering, or spending money to make the lives of the poor worse.

These are things you can’t say about the modern American right. In fact, many conservative politicians only pretend to be Scrooges, when they’re actually much worse — not mere misers, but actively cruel. This was true long before Donald Trump moved into the White House. What’s new about the Trump era is that the cruelty is more open, not just on Trump’s part, but throughout his party...

How would the far right react to a Trump loss? Here’s a glimpse.

Many Americans are terrified of what would happen if Donald Trump won a second term in office. But perhaps we should be nearly as scared of what will happen if he loses in November.

We may be getting a small window into how things could devolve in that direction in Virginia, a perfect place to witness how frustration at the loss of power can manifest itself in disturbing and even dangerous ways.

Gun rights advocates and militia members from around the country are urging thousands of armed protesters to descend on Virginia's capital later this month to stop newly empowered Democrats from passing gun-control bills.

What began as a handful of rural Virginia counties declaring themselves “Second Amendment sanctuaries” has jumped the state’s borders and become an Internet phenomenon. Far-right websites and commenters are declaring that Virginia is the place to take a stand against what they see as a national trend of weakening gun rights. ...

And so a Nevada-based group called the Oath Keepers said it’s sending training teams to help form posses and militia in Virginia. The leader of a Georgia militia called Three Percent Security Force has posted videos and calls to arms on Facebook, urging “patriots” to converge on Richmond. The right-wing YouTuber “American Joe Show” warned without evidence that Virginia will cut the power grid to stop the army of protesters — one of a host of false and exaggerated rumors spreading online.

We’re already getting used to the early hints — a mass shooting here, a mass shooting there, the inevitable discovery of online rants in which the shooter laments that the white race is being replaced and only a spasm of violence will wake America up to the crisis. But what if it were even more frequent? And what if it were not a series of lone shooters but an organized effort by militia groups, carefully planned and executed? And what if it were directed not just at random malls and synagogues but at politicians and legislatures and the government itself?

I’m not arguing that a Trump defeat will inevitably bring us to this nightmare of constant terrorism. But it doesn’t seem like much of a stretch to imagine it will.

My article in today’s Jerusalem Post explaining how President Trump is leading the fight against Antisemitism.
https://m.jpost.com/Diaspora/Antisemitism/President-Trump-leads-the-fight-agains...

The connection between Trump and the violence against Orthodox Jews is subtle. His conspiracy theories seem to have launched inverted ones in his foes. But one thing's for sure: Jews are paying the price, caught in the crosshairs of competing craziness.

There is no denying that the uptick in anti-Semitism is related to the dark forces Trump's presidency has unleashed on the margins of society, even when the attacks come from those who hate him and oppose him. We lived in a bubble in our goldeneh medinah until three years ago.

That said, I do think these are fringe phenomena. We Americans are much more united than our politicians and pundits want us to believe. Most Americans on both sides are I believe horrified by anti-Semitism. I just wish they'd speak up more when it comes from their allies.

The President granted these blood libelists press credentials & called on them at a presser. Is that fighting anti-Semitism, @USAmbIsrael? I'm the first to admit there's anti-Semitism on the left. But that, too, has gotten much worse in response to Trump.

WATCH: This antisemite and his news agency recently received press credentials from the White House. We need everyone to speak up to stop these bigots: "That's the way Jews work: They are deceivers. They plot. They lie. They do whatever they have to do to accomplish their agenda. This Impeach Trump movement is a Jew coup. The American people better wake up." Why do these blood libelers have press credentials, @realDonaldTrump? https://twitter.com/SiaKordestani/status/1220115182577303553

Why is it so hard to admit that we are all failing on this front? Anyone calling themselves a victor in the fight against anti-Semitism right now is lying. We are all failing.

Anyone who follows me knows I do think Trump gets over-blamed for things; the rise in hate crimes isn't one of them. He may not be *technically* responsible for the ways the far left has shifted in reaction to him, but it's truly nonsense to deny he's the cause of a lot of it.

I don't think he's a good person but if he can just get a small % of the people who listen to him to not vote for Trump that could be very important in Trump not winning reelection and Bernie doesn't have to play this endorsement up and I don't think he will--this is something that's kind of unexpected and he doesn't have to give up anything for and he can't help someone saying he or she is or isn't going to vote for him. Apparently the interlocutor who asked him who he was voting for was a right wing Netanyahu fan and she didn't quite get the answer she was hoping for. From my point of view endorsements like AOC, Omar, Tlaib, Khanna, Jayapal (the congresswoman who wrote Sanders medicare for all bill in the House), Reich, Leahy and Cornel West are the most important ones that Sanders has.

Jan 26, 2020, 2:02 pm

So as far as I can tell the "endorsement" is a weak "eh, might vote for Bernie, who knows", and the real problem is that Sanders seems to have replied enthusiastically to it. That IS a problem. It's one thing having bastards vote for you. Anyone can vote for whomever they please, not all bastards make the same calculations. But you don't have to go around giving props to them.

It's just sickening that women, black people, sexual minorities, can't count on the most progressive candidates to support them and fight their dehumanisation.

Rogan is an asshole but we're also living in a fucked up world and Trump is a fucking threat to just about everybody on the planet. If he gets in again there's no telling how much more damage he's going to do to the planet for one thing. We're at the point where things have to be done immediately or there's no going back. It's not just more forest fires, more sea level rise, more earthquakes--it's also large swathes--entire countries potentially becoming uninhabitable that could well lead to a refugee problem that will just swamp and become the be all refugee problem of all the refugee problems the planet already has had all time. They deny science but they still intend to keep everyone and anyone out with violence--they'd rather massive amounts of people die in a desert that we had a big part in making and deny responsibility for that too. This fucking guy and his party can't get another 4 fucking years no way and no how and that's just one issue. There are plenty more. Trump needs to go but I'd rather have it happen as peacefully as possible.

Yeah, well, that's what people were trying to say back in 2016 when Berniebros & assorted "bros" were pissing on "Killary" like she's a demon from hell--that no matter how "bad" she was, she was running against Trump, who never hid not only what a disgusting pile of crap he was, but neither his billionaire-enriching, environment-raping plans.

Didn't matter one bit. Not one blessed bit. The orange ape was promising to run the country like his business, to open protected nature to exploitation, boasting about skeeving on women, getting off scot-free with murder etc. Didn't matter to the white bros a smidgen. Principles and progressivism were invoked by the same people who were saying Clinton would be worse than Trump, that she WAS worse than Trump!

So, eh. What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Sanders better reconsider pandering to the asshole demographic while his support is majority women, black people, young people.

The two frontrunners right now are Biden and Sanders. After them Warren's still got a real chance--but she's going to have to move and FWIW IMO the Des Moines Register endorsement is more important than the NYTimes one. She needs to make that play. I don't think Buttigieg, Klobuchar or Bloomberg really have a legit shot.

To me Bernie is still the best but I do like Warren.

I think Biden would be a disastrous choice. He might win against Trump but I see numerous problems--he's going to get slapped around by Trump on the Ukraine thing and he's got his name on a lot of really shitty legislation going back 20-25 years and there are a lot of skeletons. He also can't talk about race without going off the rails with shit like black parents not reading enough to their kids or similar nonsense like that. He goes off into these faux angry moments which aren't convincing and he's not good on issues and easily goaded and distracted by insult. IMO---he's a weakling (and I wouldn't say that about the other contenders) and Trump will take advantage of that and Biden could still win because a lot of people would vote for almost anybody at all but Biden even if he pulls it off would be a terrible choice and a lot of people who don't realize that now are going to realize that before the next inauguration. And IMO Biden doesn't see much past his nose and thinks we can go back to 2010 and he thinks he can work with all these Republican Senators and that he knows them--and they're really good people?---who is he kidding?--besides himself.

.....and I think Warren would be a really really good choice---though she'll need to not let herself be goaded or distracted. That's been hard for her with Trump. She's a bit more towards the center than I'd like but IMO she is arguably the smartest of all the candidates--definitely the smartest on the economy and on policy. Self control and focus are important for her if she's the candidate---stay on topic--point out his bullshit and flaws. Keep away from the twitter shit. Don't have to respond to every provocation. If she can keep her eyes on the prize she should kill him in the election.

Klobuchar is tough. Buttigieg kind of killed Warren's momentum but Klobuchar turned around and killed his. But she did it in a smart way--nothing sneaky--she made a remark that hurt him and he kept coming back for more and he got it but she left him exits out--he just wouldn't take them. I was impressed by that. I don't care for her centrist politics but she's a person you could go to war with.

#40---one thing I wouldn't want to see is Rogan on a campaign event. I don't think though I'm very knowledgeable when it comes to social media. LT is basically my social media. No twitter account--no facebook account--no instagram account--I have a youtube account but it's been so long since I used it that I have no idea what my user name or password is---I have the most primitive cell phone imaginable---it doesn't link up to anything--it's about half the size of a regular wallet and it flips open. I don't keep track of who is hating on who on their social media accounts. People laugh at my cellphone and hardly anyone ever calls me anyway. It's really a watch. Generally I think things like facebook and twitter are a bane and what people get up to on them to complete strangers seems pretty goofy to me.

#43--sometimes I'm not very happy with my own answers to things. I hit a wall and end up arguing with myself. Quite often it's like I only really begin to understand things in retrospect.

The United States is very much a sick patient IMO. It's like a junkie and one side of the junky's brain is telling him that the feverish state he is in now---he needs to go to the hospital or at least see a doctor and the other side--the Trump side is like 'No, I need to double/triple up on my next hit and everything will be as good as new'. The irrationality has boiled over a lot of times in the last 3 years---hopefully the country decides to go to the emergency room.

This is extremely insulting:

Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) (Episode) "New Rule: Big Show with Crazy Maniac" | 777,695 views • aired : 25 Jan 2020

First, this monologue is typical of what we see from spoiled-sport losers, now in their third year and counting of attempting every dirty-trick in the book to undermine and thwart President Trump—

denying he won fairly, then demanding re-counts, then alleging faithlessness among the Electoral college's electors, then asserting that Trump was mentally unfit to hold office and must be removed under the 25th amendment, then creating from whole cloth a bogus set of allegations, devoid of supporting evidence—of collusion with one or more foreign nations' governments or their heads of state, then disingenuously impeaching Trump on the basis of these unfounded allegations and putting the articles on trial in the Senate—but not before attempting to game the process by insisting that the Senate cede to opposition leaders in the House of Representatives some of the key aspects of is constitutionally-granted sole authority to try all impeachment cases.

Throughout, Democrats—leading Trump's opposition, whether within the citizenry or within partisan elected or appointed officials of state or federal governments, whether they be in an executive, a legislative or—even!—a judicial branch of government— Trump's opposition, have seen fit to summarily dispense with centuries of legal and legislative due process and procedural forms and standards of practice—because these, had they been respected by a good-faith application, were likely to lead to the collapse of Trump's opponents' false and dishonestly contended claims and allegations.

Such are the people, exampled by Bill Maher in this video, who have the amazing nerve to predict that, should Trump's re-election campaign fail to earn a deserved victory at the ballot-box in November, it is a virtual foregone conclusion that Trump would refuse—-now, steady yourself and get this: Trump, and, especially his supporters, with his direct or indirect encouragement would refuse to honor the results and refuse to leave office in the usual peaceful manner of past transitions from one White House administration to its successor.

Trump, these people tell us, based on their own cooked interpretations of Trump's record of commentary, would stubbornly refuse to accept the election's result and fight it by all means, both fair or foul, legal or illegal.

Second, in the face of what has every indication of being a dismal failure of these hysterical people's efforts to eliminate Trump's administration or even to simply persuade a significant majority of the general public that Trump is not worthy of his office, this prognostication of Trump's future failure to win re-election seems calculated to serve as cover and pretext for their own continued efforts to unseat Trump in the very plausible event that he is re-elected.

Do these people ever see, hear or look at themselves and at the amazing blunders they've committed over the previous three-year hysterically-obsessed hounding of Trump?

My question—actually posed in this site's discussion-fora and, as yet, as far as I'm aware, still lacking a single affirmative reply—is simple:

Are they prepared to publicly identify themselves (i.e. go on the record ) as ready to accept the 2020 presidential election result even if, when decided by the usual standards of past elections, it returns Donald Trump to the White House for a second term as president of the United States?

To date, as far as I am aware, the only openly-given responses amount, in effect, to a more or less directly stated "No."

I advise anyone interested in seeing how Trump's election has "unleashed 'bigots' and 'bullies' "—never mind 'blind insufferable hypocrites'— to follow the hyper-link above and watch Maher explain how, when he loses his re-election bid in November's balloting, Trump may be counted on to refuse to honor that result and attempt to illegally remain in office.

That display of nervy gumption now sets hypocrisy's bar very, very high. How is that to be “topped”?

Tailgates, Melania lookalikes, and clashes with protesters outside Trump’s rally in Wildwood
Ellie Rushing and Amy S. Rosenberg | January 28, 2020

Thousands of rally goers massed in a determined line that zig-zagged around streets throughout Wildwood. They were there for President Donald Trump. So were the protesters. (President Donald Trump...came to town in part to gin up support for local Rep. Jeff Van Drew, the longtime Democrat who rocked the political world last month by defecting to the GOP after his opposition to impeachment alienated Democrats.)

...Dawn Liston of Williamstown says protesters were spit on by Trump rally goers on the Wildwood Boardwalk.

...Several Trump fans shouted “Fake news!” at reporters filming them, and one shouted “the media is run by Jews” at a Reuters photographer...

...In the thick of the line, an announcement warned people that if they saw a protester in the rally, “do not touch or harm the protester.” The announcement advised they should instead hold their sign over their head and chant “Trump! Trump! Trump!” Then a security person would come and remove the protester...

Secret service protection NOW for both Biden and Sanders:

A Man Unfurled A Nazi Flag And Shouted Anti-Jewish Slurs At A Bernie Sanders Rally
Ruby Cramer & Miriam Elder | March 6, 2020

The incident comes at a time of increasing concern about the rise of white nationalism in the country and as Sanders runs to become the first Jewish president.

A man waving a Nazi flag and shouting “Heil Hitler” was kicked out of a rally for Bernie Sanders on Thursday, a shocking incident targeting the man running to be the first Jewish president.

The flag, styled professionally in the actual designs of Nazi Germany, hung prominently over a banister at the 7,000-person Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the start of Sanders’ speech. The person stationed himself in the upper deck of the arena, behind where Sanders was speaking.

...Multiple protesters caused disruptions at the rally, including one who unfurled a “TRUMP” banner...

If Bernie could control what everyone online or that came to his rallies might say or do (like some of his detractors seem to think he could do if he wanted to) then it would truly be a cult he was leading. Just saying there are nuts out everywhere. Obsessive, angry, weird people don't always congregate in the same places or obsess over the same things or people though when I worked for the Post Office there were a number of my compatriots who had spent time in psych or behavorial health wards. Not hard to understand really--Post Office was the repository for lots of Korean and Vietnam and later Iraqi war veterans and lots of them had problems.

I think Sanders has rejected Secret Service suggestion in the past, but I think he should reconsider. Remember RFK...

(I understand that it can be a bad look, but there must be subtle options for security. At an environmental meeting years ago, I remember staring open-mouthed when a thuggish ex-mayor of Detroit arrived surrounded by huge, imposing bodyguards. We Don’t Have Time for This
Jamil Smith | March 20, 2020

Trump’s racism isn’t ancillary to his inept response to the coronavirus pandemic — it is part of it

...people in this country and around the world are targeting those of Asian descent with increased violence and harassment. People have stigmatized Chinatowns in various cities. A teenager here in Los Angeles was assaulted at school and falsely accused of contracting the novel coronavirus. A Cleveland woman was denied an Airbnb rental because of “local health advisories.” Journalists have spoken up on Twitter about being accosted on the street or, in a notable instance, reportedly having the phrase “Kung Flu” said to her face by a White House staffer.

Trump, with all of his deliberate ignorance, will continue to deny that he has anything to do with it, despite what experts have claimed and his past actions have shown. But especially given the setting — a presidential task-force briefing that ostensibly gives facts to the public — why is Trump not challenged to say how calling it the “Chinese virus” helps save lives? We have seen a correlation between Trump’s racist rhetoric and actions, and the spike in terrorist violence committed by white supremacists. Why would this be any different? Why isn’t he held to account for engaging in similar behavior during this deadly crisis?...

The Rise of Coronavirus Hate Crimes
Anna Russell | March 17, 2020

...Mike Ainsworth, the director of London services at Stop Hate U.K., an anti-hate group...stressed that hate crimes should be reported to the police. But he also noted that witnesses could help by interacting with the victim, to convey a sense of solidarity. “I don’t expect people to confront perpetrators, but I do expect people to show the victim that they don’t agree with what the perpetrators say,” he said. “Talk to them about anything, it doesn’t matter. What clothes are you wearing, where are you going, how are you?”

“There’s a narrative that happens with hate crime from the perpetrator which says, ‘I am attacking you, but actually lots of people agree with me.’ Where hate crime becomes really dangerous is if victims start to believe that,” Ainsworth said. “I’ve talked to victims of hate crime in London, and one of the things they say is ‘being racially abused on the tube station is horrible, but having two hundred people stand there saying nothing is the bit that starts to really upset me and corrode my trust in society.’ ”

Across the country, Asian Americans have reported a sharp increase in verbal abuse and physical attacks
Tracy Jan | May 19, 2020

...Some academic experts on race say President Trump’s rhetoric around the virus and China has contributed to the rise in racial harassment. For weeks, Trump deliberately referred to the coronavirus as the “Chinese virus” despite guidance from public health officials to avoid attaching locations or ethnicity to a disease. He has since tweeted that Asian Americans are not to be blamed for the virus’s spread.

“Words matter. People are making that close association between the virus and Chinese people because he insisted on using that term,” Jeung said.

During a media briefing last week, Trump lashed out at CBS News White House correspondent Weijia Jiang, who is Chinese American, telling her to “Ask China!” after she questioned him on why he insisted on making testing a global competition at a time when so many lives are being lost. Jiang previously tweeted that a White House official had called the virus “the Kung-Flu” to her face.

White House adviser Peter Navarro, in an ABC News interview Sunday, accused China of sending “hundreds of thousands of Chinese” to “seed” the coronavirus around the world. And Sen. The Trump administration’s proposed homeless shelter rule spells out how to spot a trans woman
Katelyn Burns | Jul 17, 2020

The Housing and Urban Development proposal instructs shelters to try to identify trans women by height, facial hair, and Adam’s apples.

...There are two main problems with forcing trans homeless people into spaces that correspond with their birth-assigned gender rather than their gender identity. The first is that such a policy exposes trans people, especially trans women, to potential violence and sexual assault inside those spaces. And as a result, trans people are more likely to choose sleeping in the streets rather than risk going to a shelter.

Because of a cycle of discrimination and poverty, trans people are more likely than their cisgender peers to experience homelessness. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, 29 percent of trans people live in poverty, and one in five trans people in the US will be homeless at some point in their lifetimes. The numbers are even starker for Black trans people: A 2015 report indicated that 34 percent of Black trans people live in extreme poverty, compared to 9 percent of Black cis people.

And while the rule is likely to fall hardest on trans women, it also opens the door to targeting butch women with more masculine presentations, as has already happened with gendered bathroom policing.

...The proposed HUD rule is the latest in a long line of anti-trans policies rolled out by the Trump administration. Almost immediately after he took office in 2017, the administration rolled back an Obama-era memo for schools to fairly treat trans students. Then in July of that year, Trump announced he would be ordering the military to ban trans people from serving. The administration went after trans prisoners as well in May 2018, deciding that in most cases, trans people should be housed according to their assigned sex at birth.

Perhaps most critical was the administration’s attack on LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections in the Affordable Care Act, finalized in a new rule on June 12.

Even though it has yet to be released, the HUD rule has already received congressional pushback. In a letter to HUD Secretary Ben Carson dated June 29, Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) urged the agency to reconsider the release of the HUD rule because of the Supreme Court decision in Bostock v. Clayton County on June 15, which held that discrimination against trans people is considered sex discrimination...

Fauci says he has been assigned personal security after receiving 'serious threats' to his family
Tom Porter | 7/24/2020

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top US infectious diseases expert, told CNN's "The Axe Files" he and his family have been receiving "serious threats" to their lives.

ATLANTA — Senator David Perdue of Georgia’s re-election campaign was assailed on Monday for a Facebook advertisement that enlarged the nose of his Democratic opponent, Jon Ossoff, who is Jewish, in a portrayal that critics immediately denounced as anti-Semitic.

The Republican senator’s fund-raising ad, which surfaced after The Forward published an article about it on Monday, included grainy photographs of Mr. Ossoff and the Senate minority leader, Chuck Schumer, who is also Jewish. “Democrats are trying to buy Georgia!” the ad said, adding that Mr. Schumer had poured millions of dollars into the race...

In this article, Thomas Friedman (a writer I normally agree with) tries to make Trump's 2020 voters appear to be poor, misunderstood souls.

but

Trump's 2020 voters hate anti-Trumpers much more than they
love America. They are throwbacks to the "good old days" when
women and Blacks were seen but not heard from. They never
abandoned their out-of-date 20th Century mindsets. That is why
Trump chose the MAGA theme. Life-long con men always know
what is in the hearts of their marks.

How to Be an Active Bystander When You See Casual Racism
Ruth Terry | Oct. 29, 2020

...Derald Wing Sue, a professor at Columbia who studies the psychology of racism and antiracism and has written extensively about microaggression theory...One of the most effective tactics...is what he calls the art of the comeback.

“A person will say to me, ‘You speak excellent English,’ and I will say, ‘You do, too, John!’” said Dr. Sue, who is Chinese-American. “The ‘compliment’ has a hidden communication to me that I’m a perpetual alien in my own country, I’m not a true American.” He said that “by simply reversing it, it may have a humorous or sarcastic impact” that reveals the comment’s underlying meaning.

Dorothy J. Edwards, president and founder of Alteristic, a nonprofit consultancy that provides bystander training, focuses on “the three D’s”: direct, distract and delegate.

“We emphasize that ‘direct’ doesn’t have to be combative or confrontational; it just means you address the situation directly...This can be as simple as “checking in on the person at risk” by asking if the person is OK or telling the perpetrator to “knock it off.”

Even your physical presence can be enough to keep someone from being the target of racial violence, said LaVonne Pepe, a social worker and a senior trainer at Alteristic.

If you witness a concerning event that may escalate into harm, Dr. Edwards recommends creating a diversion. For example, suggest going to get food. Or tell a white lie: Say someone’s car is being towed. Interrupt a heated discussion by asking for a phone charger. Doing so can help to de-escalate a situation and give the person on the receiving end of the behavior a chance to exit the scene.

Delegation is even easier: Enlist the help of that one friend who actually likes direct confrontation or has the clout to absorb any pushback. The idea is to just do something, whatever that may be.

Why being an active bystander is much easier said than done...

When should I intervene?...early and often...

I try to do this but it’s so hard. I’m exhausted...

What if I get it wrong? You will. Try again. Build resilience...

More resources about being an active bystander:
The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity website has a virtual training and downloadable materials.
Hollaback offers various trainings in New York City and a free guide to bystander interventions.

Hmm...black people were counted as three-fifths of a human being at the time of the US Constitution.

Black men (men only, mind you) didn’t get the right to vote until after the Civil War.

Women of any color didn’t get the right to vote until 1920.

Women couldn’t get credit cards without the consent of their husbands as late as the 1960’s.

Trump attorney issues call for violence against truth-telling former election cybersecurity official
Jim Acosta, Jake Tapper and Devan Cole | November 30, 2020

Washington (CNN)An attorney for the Trump campaign on Monday issued a call for violence against Chris Krebs, a former cybersecurity official who was unceremoniously ousted from his post by President Donald Trump after he rejected the President's unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud.

Joe diGenova, an attorney for Trump's campaign, said during an appearance on "The Howie Carr Show": "Anybody who thinks the election went well, like that idiot Krebs who used to be the head of cybersecurity. That guy is a class A moron. He should be drawn and quartered. Taken out at dawn and shot."

A source familiar with Trump's election challenges said diGenova is believed to still be helping Rudy Giuliani, Trump's attorney, in challenging the presidential election results. ...

Chris Krebs Planning Legal Action After Trump’s Lawyer Calls for Him to Be Shot: ‘There Are Things Coming’
Ken Meyer | Dec 1, 2020

...Trump campaign lawyer Joe diGenova...spoke to Newsmax on Monday...seethed that (Former DHS Cybersecurity chief Chris Krebs) is a “class A moron” who “should be drawn and quartered, taken out at dawn and shot.”

On Tuesday, Krebs gave an interview to NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, and she asked for his response to the “disturbing and outrageous” rhetoric.

“It’s certainly more dangerous language, more dangerous behavior,” Krebs stoically answered, “The way I look at it is that we are a nation of laws, and I plan to take advantage of those laws. I’ve got an exceptional team of lawyers that win in court, and I think they’re probably going to be busy.”

“You feel these legal actions that might arise from comments like that?” Guthrie asked for clarification. She also inquired if Krebs was concerned for his safety.

“We’re taking a look at all of our available opportunities,” Krebs said. “I’m not going to give them the benefit of knowing how I’m reacting to this. They can know that there are things coming, though.”

Group That Protested at MI Official’s Home Claims Ties to Local GOP
Kelly Weill | Dec. 08, 2020

...A group that visited Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s home on Saturday night is one of many self-described “grassroots” groups working to overturn President Donald Trump’s election loss. But this one lists a local Republican Party office as its own headquarters.

Benson had been about to watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas with her young child when a crowd of approximately 20 people marched up to her home with bullhorns and Trump flags. The group was there to falsely accuse Benson of rigging the election against Trump. Benson, who serves as Michigan’s chief elections officer, claimed in a statement that some of the people who visited her home that night were armed.

No arrests were made at the Saturday protest, but it was not a spontaneous outpouring of right-wing grievances. Genevieve Peters, an attendee who streamed the event on Facebook, posted that the group was affiliated with “Stop The Steal MI.” That group claims to share its “HQ” with the Macomb County Republican Party, which shared Peters’ video of the demonstration outside Benson’s home on its official Facebook page...

Evidence Nasty, Dangerous, and Stupid Go Hand-in-Hand-in-Hand

Trump supporter uses his work email to threaten ‘mass execution of public officials.’

Michigan state Rep. Lauri Pohutsky, a Democrat in Livonia, exposed contents of email received from Trump supporter, Randall Yaeger, who chose to send it from his work email at Yaeger Construction. Efforts to find him or the business have not had results. Authorities are investigating his messages.
‘Change out government officials with bullets instead of ballots.’ And. . .

. . . one threat in Facebook to every member of the Michigan House and possibly Wisconsin on Wednesday, went too far.

"Rather than replacing us with ballots, they’re going to start using bullets," Pohutsky said.

But the post went farther.

"It called for the mass execution of elected officials, and it stated a date as well," Pohutsky said. The date is Jan 6th 2021.

(Yeager could face) Consequences (that) include prison time of up to 20 years and a $250,000 fine -- similar to a New Hampshire woman who is now facing charges after allegedly sending disgusting threats to the chair of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, Monica Palmer.

Two Washington Post reporters overheard the Georgia Republican twice call out to Ocasio-Cortez by her first name, and the New York Democrat kept walking, so Greene picked up her pace and shouted accusations at her colleague and demanded a public debate.

"You don't care about the American people," Greene shouted. "Why do you support terrorists and antifa?"
Because AOC ignored her and notified the DC police (and Sgt.-at-Arms of the House, I believe) MTG followed up her school yard behavior with this.
"'Ms. Defund The Police' wants to call the police for security bc she's afraid of debating with me about her socialist GND," Green wrote on Twitter. "AOC is a fraud & a hypocrite."

"That's fine Sandy," the Republican lawmaker added. "Since you lack the courage & intelligence to debate me, I'll debate the person who really wrote it."
Who is "Sandy"? Some kind of pop culture reference? Obviously, AOC has unlimited power by ignoring her to drive MTG into a crazed frenzy of name-calling and spittle spewing. Delightful!

Taylor Greene has no committee assignments. What that means for a sitting representative is they’re an empty suit and no one need pay attention to anything that they do. She resorts to her bullying behavior because she’s an attention seeking clown and it’s past practice for her. Unfortunately for at least most of us she’ll be around for a while simply because she represents an extremely conservative district. I wouldn’t give her air to breathe either. She’s not worth the time or the energy. Waiting for her new buddy Mr. Gaetz to go down the toilet of history.

Liz Cheney’s Unlikely Journey From G.O.P. Royalty to Republican Outcast
Dick Cheney always saw doomsday threats from America’s enemies. His daughter is in a lonely battle against what both see as a danger to American democracy: Donald J. Trump.
Mark Leibovich | June 20, 2021

...She has received a stream of death threats, common menaces among high-profile critics of Mr. Trump, and is now surrounded by a newly deployed detail of plainclothes, ear-pieced agents.

Her campaign spent $58,000 on security from January to March, including three former Secret Service officers, according to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission. Ms. Cheney was recently assigned protection from the Capitol Police, an unusual measure for a House member not in a leadership position. The fortress aura around Ms. Cheney is reminiscent of the “secure undisclosed location” of her father in the days after the Sept. 11 attacks...
