I've been reading books by folks classified as critical pedagogues, such as Paulo Freire and Ivan Illich, and was curious to know of others who have had an influence on your ideologies of schooling.

I was surprised at how "radical" Dewey sounded to me when I finally really delved into his "Democracy in Education." I like a lot of what he says in that book and it is quoted heavily in my personal philosophy of education. I also really enjoyed reading bell hooks Teaching to Transgress. The book that really kick-started my renewed interest in radical pedagogy though was Teaching to Change the World by Jeannie Oakes.

I don't think I've read any Ivan Illich yet.

Just finished Teaching to Transgress...wow! I loved it. I read Bill Ayers' To Teach, and enjoyed that quite a bit. His words are at the same time powerful and poetic.

Also, a good reaction to Freire's words is Jeanne Brady's Schooling Young Children: A Feminist Pedagogy for Liberatory Learning. Good stuff...brings Freire into a postmodern perspective.

Related to postmodernism, William Doll, Jr's A Postmodern Perspective on Curriculum is also very good.
