Hobbit vs Hobbit: Photos

Out 13, 2018, 6:27 pm

I think you have them all Wootle, looks great. The only thing I might add, is that I believe there was another version of The Hobbit that is a little larger in size that was done for the Masterpieces of Fantasy collection.

3Wootle
Out 13, 2018, 6:50 pm

I have considered buying the oversized Hobbit several times. Was it produced for the MoF series or just randomly. I don't recall if it had the MoF endpapers or not.

4Eastoner
Out 13, 2018, 7:22 pm

>3 Wootle: I'm not sure, I thought it was produced for the MoF series. Also not sure about the end papers, we'll have to keep an eye out.

5Wootle
Out 13, 2018, 7:35 pm

I just checked a couple of listings and the oversized Hobbit does not have MoF endpapers. So it probably was not produced for that series. I have seen the LOTR copies with the Fantasy endpapers. Don't recall if I have ever seen a Hobbit with the Fantasy papers though.

6Eastoner
Out 13, 2018, 8:09 pm

>5 Wootle: I retract my earlier statement, after checking my lists I don't believe The Hobbit was ever a part of MoF, only the LOTR trilogy. So, it must have just been for sale individually at some point.

So do we think they're reprinting most (all?) of these now? Just realized I didn't have Children of Hurin, so ordering that tonight. Would love to fill in my gaps. I was surprised they did the Father Christmas book, gives me hope that I can pick up the other over the next year or so.

>8 GuyEP18:

Honestly you never really know with EP. There are many titles no longer in print that command a high price due to low supply and high demand that they have yet to reprint (including many Tolkien books). If they do plan to reprint them, The Children of Hurin first came out roughly 10 years ago, so you might have to wait a bit.

10Wootle
Nov 5, 2018, 8:16 pm

I'm expecting to see the newest release The Fall of Gondolin in January and then hopefully they will get around to Tales From the Perilous Realm and then Sigurd and Gudrun sometime next year. They know they will definitely sell, so why not reprint them.

"We expect to ship your order by Sunday, November 18, 2018"

14hamletscamaro
Nov 15, 2018, 1:47 pm

Just ordered the two new titles as these always seem to sell out very quickly. I am not sure why they don't have larger print runs on these. Besides propping up aftermarket prices, I don't see why they print these in limited runs and sell out in a number of months. The Tolkien books always seem to be ready cash for EP.

15Wootle
Nov 15, 2018, 1:59 pm

Perhaps they have started to do just that. Aotrou has been around for almost 7 months now. So they may be increasing the print runs. Just reprinting them one by one will be helpful to driving down the aftermarket prices. It would be interesting to see how well Hurin has sold since the reprint. Being unavailable for 10 years should have greatly increased market hunger for collectors. I was certainly happy to see it and especially Father Christmas.

16Wootle
Nov 20, 2018, 12:01 pm

Father Christmas supposedly shipped yesterday. I have found lately that their, we have shipped the book statements not to be true however. So we will see.

17stubedoo
Nov 21, 2018, 1:20 am

I never understand why people pay a lot of money for any of these on the secondary market. With very few exceptions, everything gets a reprint in the end, and the issuing of the reprint immediately knocks the after-market value back to RRP. I stopped collecting after Beowulf, but I am tempted to get Letters from Father Christmas just to complete my collection of the earlier ones.

18Wootle
Nov 23, 2018, 4:31 pm

23Love2Read.
Nov 24, 2018, 1:27 pm

I have no idea, it looks like worn out, making the edges of the colored end papers look white.....I have no idea how these endpapers are fabricated but it looks like they have been going through a printer/machine, pressing too hard on the edges making the "silk" ware off.

Nov 24, 2018, 1:54 pm

I was thinking about expanding my Tolkien book collection by buying the EP versions, but I see that most of the Tolkien titles were offered in the past and sold out. I'm wondering if its a good or bad idea to start so late since most titles are not available now!!!

25Wootle
Nov 24, 2018, 2:23 pm

>24 Tolkienfan: As long as you are not looking to complete the entire run in a short period. If you are patient for the reprints, I think it is fine to start it now. Father Christmas has been the most expensive title to pick up for years, and now you can get it cheap. Just wait for the reprints and build it at retail.

26Wootle
Nov 24, 2018, 8:48 pm

>19 Love2Read.: I received mine and inspected it. I have a little bit of what you described. It is the white backing paper of the silk that is showing through. The silk was scraped thin in spots and shows the white underneath. Mine isn't so bad I will return, but it's to bad that it is there. I put a photo of it in the album.

Tolkienfan, I just started collecting them as well. I am happy with my progress thus far. Children of Hurin and Father Christmas were huge for me personally as I could not afford them otherwise, and they are still available. I did, however, trade the Tolkien classics EPs for a set from Lyra Bookbinder. If you can afford it and/or save up to it, those books are certainly worth every penny. Here's an example of the last set he did:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292679074159?_mwBanner=1&ul_ref=https%253A%252F%2...

I am also told the first edition Folio Society's are letterpress. I have a set in black, and they are the most beautiful books I own.

29Wootle
Nov 24, 2018, 10:10 pm

>19 Love2Read.: I have inspected this issue more in a bright light. Mine is worse than I thought. I also am thinking it is a glue issue. Perhaps the glue was thinner than normal and it soaked through around the edges when put under pressure. The edges are going to get more pressure than the middle area because of the additional leather thickness where it is overlapped. I am also seeing it slightly around the rear edges but to a lesser extent.

I have had glue issues on two other books since the merger with MBI happened. Twice on Innocent Abroad DLE, and once on a 100 Greatest Books (which had been a new recent re-printing, per Easton). The glue has been seeping out from between the leather and the end pages.

>19 Love2Read.:

Not really. There was a trace amount of dried glue (or something similar in texture (hoping it's not anthrax)) in the back bottom fold of the moire end sheet. It was nothing that a quick wipe from a dry paper towel couldn't handle.

Not surprising: EP's customer service is a completely different entity from the bindery, which is where the newest of books always seem to ship. One might expect the bindery to let EP management know that a title is ready for shipment but even if EP management is in the same building as EP customer service, I'm willing to bet that the two don't interact much.

So for the posthumously published 12 volume "History of Middle-earth" (as compiled by his son, Christopher) am I correct that Easton Press has now released most of these books? Now that they have just released "Morgoth's Ring" and "The War of the Jewels", am I correct in my count of 8 of the 12 released, or are some of the titles some

History of Middle-earth:
1. The Book of Lost Tales , Part I (1983) YES
2. The Book of Lost Tales, Part II (1984) YES
3. The Lays of Beleriand (1985) YES
4. The Shaping of Middle-earth (1986) NO? - Is this the same as the "Making of Middle-earth"?
5. The Lost Road and Other Writings (1987) NO
6. The Return of the Shadow (The History of The Lord of the Rings Volume 1) (1988) YES
7. The Treason of Isengard (The History of The Lord of the Rings Volume 2) (1989) YES
8. The War of the Ring (The History of The Lord of the Rings Volume 3) (1990) YES
9. Sauron Defeated (includes The History of The Lord of the Rings Volume 4) (1992) NO? - Or is this the "End of the Third Age"?
10. Morgoth's Ring (The Later Silmarillion Volume 1) (1993) YES
11. The War of the Jewels (The Later Silmarillion Volume 2) (1994) YES
12. The Peoples of Middle-earth (1996) NO

I still have a few of these as gaps and I am hoping that EP re-releases some of the titles again.

>83 hamletscamaro: Thoughts on quality and contents?

85hamletscamaro
Jun 20, 2019, 10:02 am

>84 thisGuy33:, my initial thoughts are these are right in line with keeping to the standards and quality of Easton's other Tolkien releases. They do have the "newer" leather, without any grain pattern, done in a similar green color as their other books (although I haven't compared them side by side yet). They also include a similar Tolkien title page with the Tolkien sigil and the runes at the top and bottom of the two pages. Since these are compiled by Christopher Tolkien, they also include a lot of his introductions and comments gathering his father's manuscripts and notes.

The War of the Jewels, 470 pages and includes four parts with subcategories:
- Part One - The Grey Annals
- Part Two - The Later Quenta Silmarillion
- Part Three - The Wanderings of Hurin and other writings not forming part of the Quenta Silmarillion
- Part Four - Quendi and Eldar
There are no pictures or illustrations, but on initial searching I found two of Tolkien's hand drawn maps, and a few hand drawn genealogical trees.

Morgoth's Ring: 471 pages, and includes five parts with various sub categories:
- Part One - Ainulindale
- Part Two - The Annals of Aman
- Part Three - The Later Quenta Silmarillion (with First and Second Phase breakdowns including several sections from everything from the Valar to the Elves, etc.)
- Part Four - Athrabeth Finrod Ah Andreth
- Part Five - Myths Transformed
This did have one color photo of Tolkien's original Black and Red hand written manuscript for "The Tale of the Years". However, besides some very short hierarchies, there were no other maps or illustrations in this book.

So overall, they will compliment prior releases well.

>85 hamletscamaro: thank you for that input. I have more then several of the EP Tolkien releases. And I really like them ... however I am not a foamer when it comes to LOTR ... I thoroughly enjoy it but don't get in too deep.

So I keep being on the edge of buying all these titles ... especially when there seems to be no "extras" ... illustrations and such. I appreciate the leather binding and EP touches. And I think I want to grab this title ... at least more so then "THE SHAPING OF MIDDLE-EARTH".

Thanks again for your thoughts!

Really don't like that EP strayed away from the "proper size" of the older books in the Histories series.

>88 Wootle:

Perhaps EP simply reprinted Houghton Mifflin Harcourt editions in leather without scaling the text, which would be an added expense and lower their profit margins.

Tolkien-mania is alive and well. No doubt this edition will sell out pretty quickly regardless of whether the size matches the rest and distorts shelf flow ;P. So will the next Tolkien volume. It is why we are seeing more of them. Tolkien's books are a reliable money-maker (whether folks actually read his more obscure works or not). Sometime next year a leather edition of Tolkien's World: A Coloring Book :).

*These newest Tolkien selections are advertised only as "Bound in the USA" unlike the 5-volume set. Are they "overseas-printed" like The Complete Fiction of H.P. Lovecraft that conveniently omits country of print on the copyright page mentioning only "Bound in the United States of America"?

90Wootle
Jun 20, 2019, 9:17 pm

Both state "Printed and Bound in the United States of America".

I've seen that coloring book, it isn't half bad, maybe it is time for the first EP color your own pages book.

The two newest are the same size as the first edition Houghton Mifflins. Looking at the size posted for the next one "The Shaping of Middle-Earth", it appears it will be back to the original size. That would look really odd having a taller one in the middle of the series.

Editado: Jun 20, 2019, 11:34 pm

The size laziness would explain how Easton managed to pump these two volumes out so quickly, with all the other Tolkien releases. It's probably less work to keep the print in its original form and just stick a leather casing on than trying to get it to fit to an existing theme.

>92 Wootle:, Thanks, Wootle. An otherwise slow weekend? :)

We appreciate the photos. Since I missed the four volume history set, I'm hoping this is one that Easton will reprint. They still seem to sell out relatively quickly; which is why I now always try to order any Tolkien titles within the first three months of release.

Hi I am not sure if
Easton Press The Complete Guide To Middle Earth (Tolkien) RARE By Robert Foster qualifies or not but I do include this book in my collection.
Also, I read something awhile back that the first issue of the Tolkien classics EP put out included the larger version of the Hobbit. Later editions evened it out to the same size. Hopefully that helps.
I am happy to say I have now completed the entire 37 vol collection.
I think the only book I do not have yet is Mr. Bliss. I am not sure if EP will ever release that one.

P.S. Thank you very much for the list you posted very cool and helpful.

Tony, welcome to the forum.

The Complete Guide to Middle Earth is on the above list, item number 1211, but has no photos in the album. If you would like to contribute some, please do.

The over-sized Hobbit I believe is item number 0014, I haven't added it to the list because I am not 100% sure as of yet. That would make it the first appearance of the title by EP. Later releases as you said, have been trimmed down to it's current uniform size.

Congratulations on completing this collection. An all encompassing photo would be nice to add to the thread if you are able to send one to me, I'll add it to the top of post 1.

Yes I see 1211 now thank you. I will get a photo of my copy and send to you this weekend. Also, I will work on photos for collection. Probably cannot be done in just one.

Hobbit vs Hobbit, a comparison between the older larger version and today's smaller profile edition. Many photos in the album, just click the pic to go there. The larger version is always on the left.

Oversized Edition: 7" x 9.25" x 1.25" (17.5 cm x 23.5 cm) 317 pages.

Current Edition: 5.75" x 8.75" x 1.15" (14.5 cm x 22.5 cm) 317 pages.

The main differences are the color illustrations. The newer edition crops off the sides, and are washed out. The green toned illustrations are lighter as well.

I'm happy to have the older version in nice condition for the same price as the currently available edition.

Been working on my Tolkien Easton Press collection for awhile now. Proud to say I own 25 of them. What are the chances we’ll get the Atlas of Middle Earth, book of lost tales, the art of LOTR, and the Fall of Gondolin reprinted in 2022?

120treereader
Nov 7, 2021, 1:26 am

>119 Ian89:

They just reprinted Book of Lost Tales within the last year or two, so that one's very unlikely. I thought Atlas of Middle Earth was also reprinted in that time frame but I could be mistaken (since there are several atlases and I don't pay enough attention to be able to distinguish them from each other). The "Art of..." - was that the group of movie-based books? Those would be very unlikely to see again, at least, not if/until Peter Jackson runs out of money some day. Fall of Gondolin seems like it has a reasonable reprint possibility.
