Wonder if anyone has heard of a romance about a woman named Avis, which would have been available in 1924. My elderly mother reminisced that her mother named her after the heroine in a romance she was reading while pregnant.
I know, it's a stretch, but thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. I'm new to this group, but have such a collection of older books, which unfortunately rarely includes romances.

>1 juniperSun: Could it be The Story of Avis, by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps? It was published in the late 1800s, but there were definitely later editions in the early 1900s.

LibriVox has this description with their audio recording: "... focuses on Avis Dobell, a professor's daughter. Avis is a talented painter, and bucks against the constraints placed on women in the 19th century. She wants to pursue a career as an artist and rejects marriage and motherhood, until she meets the charismatic young professor Philip Ostrander..." The book is available for reading online. Here's the HathiTrust record: https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/100003205

There are many copies listed in WorldCat, too.
