A must see event, launching of SpaceX's "heavy" rocket. Cross-posting below from SF fans topic:

Off topic but just watched SpaceX heavy launch - and ...yep... They had the dummy/StarMan driving Musk's red roadster on live TV after the faring popped off of the rocket showing him piloting the thing into space while David Bowie was playing on the stereo! The side boosters landing simultaneously were quite the sight to see. SpaceX.com where I think you can replay the scene.

Edit: the actual take off is at 29 minutes into the webcast and I would start there and then back to start for background

That is one MONSTER rocket.

Hope one like it will eventually carry some of my ashes to Mars...

Given Musk's liking for Iain M. Banks, is it coincidence that he put one of his old cars into orbit, given that in The State of the Art, the Culture Contact team that came to Earth in the middle 1970s had their orbital shuttle disguised as a Volvo estate...?

The knock-on effect of the Falcon Heavy could be that NASA cancels work on its own large rocket, especially given theirs is not reusable. Trump could transfer all the money and materials to build a wall or a pipeline across protected land.

>8 Jargoneer: I read that the Falcon Heavy was developed for $500 million using zero government money. The cost of a Heavy launch at $90 million while: "By contrast, the cost of launching rockets from SpaceX competitor United Launch Alliance will run $422 million per takeoff by 2020, according to one analysis of Air Force documents." quote from below.

>11 iansales: If I am not mistaken I believe I read that Musk started SpaceX with $100 million of his own money. It looks like he has a low cost lead into the commercial space industry at least. Communication satellites are very popular - even in "developing nations" it seems. I heard Google dropped their $30 million prize {with performance requirements} for landing on the moon. The finalists should get together & put them all on a Musk "Heavy" with a big subsidy from Google.

Personally I think the way to go would be to put one of those new laser beam internet/relay "communicators" on the moon and sell bandwidth to whoever lands there! Always good to have a back up system.

>19 Jargoneer: Stories like that were common in the UAE. You used to see them all the time in the Gulf News. I remember one where an Emirati businessman had hired a witch doctor to help him win a contract. The witchdoctor told the businessman to throw several thousand dollars worth of gold jewellery into the sea just off Dubai. Which he did. Of course, it had no effect. But the businessman didn't report the witch doctor for theft, he sued him for failing to win him the contract.

Baltimore, home of the worst, most corrupt cops in America.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44402948

One in-depth podcast series I heard had two separate individuals (one a cop!) claiming that at least 50% of Baltimore's cops were either corrupt or covering up for corruption.

My God...

>27 DugsBooks: Wow! That was a long read but you are right, it was so much like The Wire. It should be made into a movie. And my main takeaway is that it would have probably served Rick better if he had watched “Serpico” as many times as he watched “Scarface”.

17 year old Rick chose the wrong lawyers and got screwed, all those very adult people he hung with who did murders etc. and they did less than half the time as he.

34anna_in_pdx
Jun 9, 2018, 12:59 am

More than the lawyers it was the cops who kept him behind bars.

35DugsBooks
Jun 9, 2018, 9:00 am

Yeah compounded by his lawyers inability to cope with the police he ratted out.

It was only briefly mentioned that he had an ostomy bag on his side after being accidently shot with a large caliber weapon. Those are extremely uncomfortable and in no way ‘tough guy” appealing - especially at 17 or younger. I wonder how long he had that or if he still has one.
