Looking at my old threads, I can see that they reflect the framework of my life the last two years. I had a break from my short-story-a-day reading in Quarter 3 of 2016, and tried to pick it up again in January 2017, with no success. Suffice it to say that 2016 and 2017 were the worst two years of my life, and I'm still recovering, emotionally and pscyhologically.

For 2018, then, I'm not going to make myself read a story every day, and blog about my favorites every month, but I do hope to read a lot of short fiction again, and blog about my favorites as the occasion arises. Maybe I'll blog about every favorite separately, if they seem to be few and far between. Maybe I'll blog each time I reach 3 stories that have a 4-star rating or above. I'm not sure yet. The important thing (to me) is that I read, and reflect on what I've read, and share a little bit of that.

And the other important thing is to do everything I can to make 2018 better than 2016-2017.

Good luck with your reading and I hope 2018 is much better than the previous 2 years!

Story #1 - January 3, 2018

Title: "The Book Thing"
Author: Laura Lippman
Length:
Category: Short story (mystery)
Where Published: Bibliomysteries (anthology)
When Published: 2017
Original Publication (if applicable): 2012
Rating:
Link (if applicable): N/A

On her own time, and on behalf of a cranky independent bookstore owner, a private detective investigates a series of bookstore shoplifting events that don't make any sense. This story was well-written and had a fairly satisfying resolution.

Story #2 - January 5, 2018

Title: "The Scroll"
Author: Anne Perry
Length:
Category: Short story (supernatural mystery)
Where Published: Bibliomysteries (anthology)
When Published: 2017
Original Publication (if applicable): 2013
Rating:
Link (if applicable): N/A

A man comes into possession of a mysterious ancient scroll, and is immediately approached by three strangers who want to buy it (and/or will do almost anything to get it), even though there's no way they could have known the man has it. Think "Dan Brown" here, and you'll know the flavor of the story. Decently written but nothing I could get excited about.

Story #3 - January 8, 2018

Title: "What's in a Name?"

Length:
Category: Short story (alternate history)
Where Published: Bibliomysteries (anthology)
When Published: 2017
Original Publication (if applicable): 2013
Rating:
Link (if applicable): N/A

This is an alternate history story. Unfortunately for me, the plot development on which it rested seemed broadcast from a mile away.

Also wishing you an improved 2018. I'd lost my habit of visiting your short story log, and see now that might be in part due to your changing reading. Wishing us both more fun this year, I found several fun pieces by skimming your blog and hope to again.
