The Diary of a Village Shopkeeper 1754-1765 – Thomas Turner 1998

This charming book is best described as being prosaic. Its contents show the routine life of a shopkeeper in the Sussex village of East Hoathly, near Lewes.

Fortunately, it has been abridged from the 111 volume original, but even so, shows in detail the routine of life in 18th. Century rural England, and gives a great insight into the life of the average Englishman of that time.

It is certainly not a book that you would read from cover to cover, but kept by the bedside to dip into for a short time before sleep is fascinating. It could be a cure for insomnia!

It is beautifully bound in quarter-buckram with Ann Muir marbled paper sides. Engravings by Miriam Macgregor are scattered through the text, as are tables and lists of purchases.

The book is 443 pages long, and of compact size – 20.2x14.5cm.

This book is in series with four others, all bound in the same way:-
- Memoirs of a Georgian Rake
- The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne
- Rides Round Britain
- Our Village
- The Diary of a Country Parson
I own all but the last two of these (I have Country Parson in an edition from another publisher).

I liked reading this. I actually read it cover to cover whilst on a holiday in Scotland.
Some laugh out loud moments. An interesting look back in time.

>1 wcarter: Went on an Ann Muir binge several years ago and discovered the wonderful series, which brings to life different places and times in England. The FS design team created perfection by combining an intimate size, buckram quarter bindings of different colors matched with Ann Muir's Spanish marbling, and rustic wood/vinyl engravings by MacGregor and Hassall plus Ian Stephens, Chris Wormell, Anne Hayward, and John Lawrence.

There's one more, Our Village, by Mary Russell Mitford 1997 F60 #884. Other F60 entries 723 772 811 846 938, with the lowest number, as in some other series, giving a tad of info about the lot and the entry# of the other books.

Many thanks for your perfect effort in providing reviews of previous publications, Doctor. I've learned of books I don't have, and rediscovered books that have been tucked away for some time.

edited to say Beat me to Our Village, 'scusa.

Thanks for the info. I've had Gilbert White and 'Our Village' for some years, and have 'Village Shopkeeper' on the way from Oxfam online. Now I know how many more I need, and titles and authors, to complete the set.
