Spinster lies about a romance in her past

In the opening (or near the beginning) there is a quilters group making a quilt for a soon to be married family member. It is all the female family members quilting together. I think it is in the heroine's home. She lives here with her mother. She is plain, downtrodden and belittled. Partly because of her status as never having a beau.
Fed up with her families attitude, she decides to create a past. There is a a brief time when she was away from this town/family home so that no-one can trully say she is lying. They think she is lying. But she gets a little credibility because she has had a romance.
She makes up a name and perhaps even some career of the hero (not sure about the details). Anyway, a stranger by this name comes into their town. The family wait for his shredding of the heroine's character and uncovering her lie.
For whatever reason, he actually feels sorry for her and agrees to assist her in a cover-up to her lies.
They end up falling in love and marrying.
Thanks for any help with title and author.
