As a companion to the other thread (nonfiction book recommendations), I thought we might post personal lists of our: 1. Top Ten Favorite Nonfiction Books about New England and / or our 2. Top Ten Favorite Fiction Books Set in New England.

I'm sure most of us would make a different list on any given day, but peruse your library and share the list you come up with.

OR, if you prefer, a list of your favorite New England poets, your favorite New England crime novels, your favorite New England cookbooks, your favorite New England biographies, your favorite SF/F/Horror by New England authors....

or whatever literary New England-related topic you wish to create a list from....

My (at this moment) Top Ten Nonfiction New England books, in no particular order:

1. Reading the Forested Landscape: A Natural History of New England by Tom Wessels
2. In the Devil's Snare: The Salem Witchcraft Crisis of 1692, by Mary Beth Norton
3. A Midwive's Tale: the Life of Martha Ballard: Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812 by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
4. Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell (best on audio!)
5. Transforming Women's Work: New England Lives in the Industrial Revolution by Thomas Dublin.
6. Good Wives: Image and Reality in the Lives of Women in Northern New England, 1650-1750 by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
7. Mayflower: A Story of Community, Courage and War by Nathaniel Philbrick
8. The Unredeemed CaptiveA Family Story from Early America by John Putnam Demos.
9. The Salem Witch Trials: A Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Community Under Siege by Marilynne Roach
10. New England Indians by C. Keith Wilbur (illustrated!)

My (at the moment) top 10 favorite modern fiction set in New England:

1. Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood (1986)
2. Mystic River by Dennis Lehane (2001)
3. Tinkers by Paul Harding (2008)
4. Go With Me by Castle Freeman, Jr. (2009)
5. In the Fall by Jeffrey Lent (2000)
6. I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem by Maryse Condé (1992)
7. A Brother's Blood by Michael C. White (1997)
8. Collected Poems by Jane Kenyon (2005)
9. Enon by Paul Harding (2013)
10. New and Selected Poems by Mary Oliver (1993)

*honorable mention goes to the oeuvre of Kenneth Lewis Roberts, whose fiction I read at the age of 12 or 13. They all sort of blend together in my memory now.

Note: I felt I couldn't put classics and other books older than, say, 100 years on the list. That's another list entirely!
