Call number issues

Abr 12, 2016, 10:45 am

I am not sure if anyone else has had this problem. but LibraryThing wont let me use an alternate call number to classify a book, especially a fiction book) The system instantly uses the Dewey number, even though most libraries don't use Dewey to classify fiction books of any kind. Any help or advice would be welcome and helpful.

>1 StMaryParishOttawa: Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your call number system. We began supporting a number of pre-existing classification systems, as well as allowing members to use their own custom system about a year ago (blog post).

Have you double-checked to make sure you've selected "Personal or custom system" on your Other Settings > Call number system here: ?

If you've already got that set correctly, can you tell me a little more about the issue? Where and how are you trying to edit your call numbers, for example?

You can add your own call number, or use the Library of Congress system, in addition to Dewey.

Please add the personal call number to the Other Call Number field, rather than editing the Dewey; editing Dewey to something idiosyncratic will affect everyone with the book, since the Dewey for people who don't have it set at the book level is generated from all copies of the book.

I want to use the auto-generated Dewey number, but need to add a Cutter-type number of my own devising to each book. How can I do that so it shows up in TinyCat?

I want the call number to appear with the entry when the user looks for the title. How would I do this?

>5 WaterstoneBoston: You can add the Call number field to your preferred Display Style here:, then set the default display style for visitors to that Style (one of the A through E options). Visitors to your catalog will land on that Style by default, though they'll be able to change it if they want.
