I'm seeing a few book/review questions over in the groups thread, so I decided I'd make a thread for those.

2LibraryCin
Jan 17, 2016, 1:14 pm

I posted this in the "my profile" thread, but it seems it might be better to have a separate thread for that.

So, here is one tip:

I wanted to let people know that you can give 1/2 stars here at LibraryThing. It's a bit "funny" the way to do it. I had to ask someone, but I suspect some (many?) of you might be interested in this feature.

When you are clicking on the stars to rate them, just click twice in a row on the star just above where you want to rate. So, if you want to give 4.5 stars, click twice in succession on the 5 stars.

>2 LibraryCin: To add to this, MarthaJeanne, in the other thread also mentioned that if you click a third time, it will clear your stars.

I brought my books over but they came without covers any ideas?

5.Monkey.
Editado: Jan 17, 2016, 3:42 pm

Covers aren't imported, you'll need to go choose your covers from the work pages.

ETA
Amazon covers aren't recommended, they are attached to ISBNs and will change your ISBN if the cover isn't connected to the one on your book. Their covers can also randomly change, if a publisher makes a new printing with the same ISBN and a different cover.
If there's not a member uploaded cover that matches yours, you can always add it yourself, either photographing/scanning your copy and uploading, or finding it online.

I know of three places you can enter your review. It should work, but if you are having trouble one place, maybe try another.

1) I don't use the catalogue page for editing, but I know that gives problems on at least some touchscreens.

2) The reviews page.

3) The edit book page.

Just tested 2 and 3 with my iPad, and they both worked.

I've noticed that several shelfari refugees have some books that came through with mangled authors. These books will not have combined into the general work, making it quite unlikely that there will be good covers available. If there is an ISBN there should be an Amazon cover, but there won't be any member covers.

Yeah it seems their fields may be a bit misplaced somehow, in one of the threads here someone mentioned that things went all in the wrong fields. But I know in Pennsy's case at least they didn't all mess up at least, since I saw we had a handful of books in common.

Rock With Wings, Anne Hillerman

* * *

I'm trying to still figure this out.....

Jim Chee & Bernadette Manuelito have come back from their "honeymoon", to go out to Monument Valley to help Jim's cousin who is in the process of setting up a guided tour business.

While there, Chee is called in to locate a missing woman from a movie set and ends up w/ a murder and and unexplained many years old mystery.

Bernie stops and arrests a suspicious driver who offers her a bribe... only to find the FBI are very interested in this man....

Bernie's sister is a major piece of work & disappears often, leaving their ailing mother alone...

Lieutenant Leaphorn is recovering from a bullet to the head and learning to communicate via computer (word programs).... he is asked by both Chee & Bernie to help with their respective cases...

It took me quite awhile to finish this book. It did not really hold my interest, too much going on in too many different places with too many people.

Shroud for a Nightingale, P.D. James

2016 Challenge: "A book you put down & didn't finish"

★ ★

Now I remember why I put this book down... The opening was boring and I just didn't care but I needed a book for the challenge.....

Two young nursing students are murdered... They were not particularly well liked and one was a self-righteous petty blackmailer. Called in to investigate Inspector Dagliesh has his work cut out for him..... for there are many other victims besides the two poisoned nurses and many people jousting for positions of power.

I couldn't keep the characters straight as many were on the peripheral and mentioned in passing and for the most part, I didn't care about the rest. They were not nice or likable people and I found Inspector Dagliesh tedious as well.

>19 Auntie-Nanuuq: and >20 Auntie-Nanuuq: Hi, Nanuuq! I wasn't thinking of sharing our reviews here. I was just posting tips.

Now, maybe I should ask if people want me to start a review thread? There's no focus or topic with this group for books/reviews. Our commonality is that we emigrated from shelfari, but if people want to share reviews here...

Anyone want to weigh in?

I don't think I want to "promote" specific groups in this group, but if anyone sends me a message to my profile, I can fill you in on a few groups I'm in. I'm sure there a lot more that I'm not a part of that would be of interest to people, as well!

Nanuuq, don't forget that you can "link" the title of your book to the book page when you are posting in a discussion thread. I think I explained it in the "groups" thread, but basically it's called a "touchstone". Instructions on that are immediately to the right of the text box you type your post into.

It depends on how many books, and how backed up the queue is. Since there are a fair amt of Shelfari folks testing the waters here, in addition to any other random importing being done, it can wind up with a little backlog. If it seems stalled you can send an email or post in one of the standing groups to ask about it and make sure things are running smoothly.

Chomp, Carl Hiaasen

2016 Challenge: Book I've Been Meaning to Read

★ ★ ★ ★

What an enchanting read.....

I ♥ most all of Hiaasen's work: he's honest, irreverent, funny, and takes a look at real environmental issues.

Wahoo & his father have a wildlife rescue center in their backyard.... His father has recently suffered a concussion from a frozen iguana that fell out of a tree, and now has headaches & sees double.....

They are approached by a reality t.v. show that wants to hire them & their alligator for an Everglades episode.

The star of the t.v. show is a total egotistical fake with ideas of grandeur. While filming w/ Alice the tame alligator, the star decides to hop on Alice's back and ends up going for a wild ride...

Soon all are on their way to an Everglades tour site, with the addition of Tuna, a run-away schoolmate of Wahoo's whose father has blackened her eye.

When her father shows up, even more madcap madness abounds.

Well written, fast paced , and entertaining... a good read for pre-teens.

Sorry Cin:

If we are not going to have a Thread/Discussion where we post reviews, then I need to ask:

Why are we here?

This other thing about linking to other pages is confusing..... I am retired, I'm on other book places and I don't want to have to work to figure this place out.

If it isn't easy, then I'm sorry to say, I'm not going to be bothered. Reading & sharing should be enjoyable not a hassle.

Well most of us don't find LT "a hassle," we find it a most excellent place. There is always a learning curve with anything new.

Cin made the group for people to come and talk, see familiar faces, and ask questions about how LT works, since it is new and there's lots of things here. Help is always nice.

>32 Auntie-Nanuuq: I started this particular group so shelfarians who are here can find each other and ask questions.

There are lots of groups here already where you can join and post reviews. I can't recall which thread (in this group), but there have been a number of group suggestions made to people who have asked. I suspect you are looking for a "general" group like that, and I believe Melissa has asked about that, so there are a few answers to that question already. I do hope that helps for you wanting to post reviews. (I get that! I like posting/sharing my reviews, too. If you want me to, I can also PM you with some of the groups I'm in, but - at least the ones I'm active in - are either challenge groups or Canadian. :-) )

I will admit that LT is confusing, especially when starting out. That's (in part) why I started this group. So, people could ask questions and maybe feel more comfortable doing it with mostly other shelfarians around. (Though I am grateful that other LTers have jumped in to help answer things I can't answer.)

My books transferred fine from Shelfari, but none of the dates I completed my books show up on my librarything shelf. Help...

37JenPrim
Jan 24, 2016, 4:59 pm

Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone can help me. I imported all my books over from Shelfari but when I did so they all came in under one place and didn't separate out into "read" "currently reading" or "to read." The problem is I don't see any option under my collections. I click the folder file and get "your library" "wish list" Currently reading" "to read" "read but unowned" and "favorites" but no option for plain old "read"

Does anyone know how to help me fix this? This is true when I access the individual book or the "all collections" drop down menu.

38LibraryCin
Editado: Jan 24, 2016, 5:37 pm

>37 JenPrim: It's odd.

I just wanted to add that I've tried talking Jen through finding where to mark a book "read", but she really doesn't seem to have the option! She could always "edit collections" and add a "read" shelf, but "Read" should be one of the main options, so we decided she should ask for help to get that fixed instead of setting up a "band aid" solution.

39amanda4242
Editado: Jan 24, 2016, 5:49 pm

"Read" isn't a default collection on LT (although I can't imagine why it isn't). If you want a "read" collection, you have to go to collections drop down menu, choose "edit collections" down at the bottom, and click on "add new collection" in the popup menu. Once you've created the collection, use power edit--the little lightning bolt icon--to add your books to the collection in bulk.

53.Monkey.
Jan 31, 2016, 5:02 pm

>52 MelanieTid: It's not meant to. It's for alpha-sorting the title correctly. In other languages with different articles, the system doesn't know not to sort them by the first letter of the first word (e.g. "Die" in a German title) and needs to be told where it ought to start.

54MelanieTid

Oh, okay! That makes sense.

55Karin7
Fev 8, 2016, 1:40 pm

Is there a way to combine multiple entries of the exact same book? Or an easy way to request this right from the listings of the title? By that I mean two entries for a title in hardback that only came out in 2015, so there aren't two different editions or even printings yet of this title. I'm guessing that audiobooks and paperbacks are kept separately more like at a library rather than combined as we did on Shelfari. Is that so?

56.Monkey.
Editado: Fev 8, 2016, 2:14 pm

No, there is no editions level, all copies of the same work are a single work. What it's created on has no bearing, same for language. The only reason copies of the same work are separate is if the content is different, e.g. abridged, or annotated (with significant material, not just a few notes). If you have copies of titles that are not combined, there are various ways to do it. It can be simple, listed in the "combine/separate potentials" link under "editions," or from the author page, or occasionally it takes a little more work. You can go to the Combiners group to ask for assistance with that.

ETA
I'm going through combining a bunch of your singletons now ;)

57MarthaJeanne
Fev 8, 2016, 2:46 pm

>55 Karin7: I've worked on some of your singletons. Because you had Amazon listed as your source, a lot of the older books have rather peculiar titles and authors listed, so the combining is rather more work than >56 .Monkey.: mentions.

Some of these book shouldn't have come over. They were hidden on my Shelfari shelf; they were only on it so I could do some Shelfari edits when I was doing a lot of editing there. Had I realized every KJV I ever edited was going to move (didn't even think about it!) I'd have eliminated them before the transfer. Normally, I only wanted one copy of each title showing on my shelf.

60.Monkey.

>69 threadnsong: Sorry for the delay on this. We've finally got a streamlined, Leafmarks-specific import in place: https://www.librarything.com/topic/225279

For your case, I'd recommend either deleting what books initially imported (you'll get better data with the new import), or, when editing your import options, selecting a different, currently empty import collection to import to this time around. That way, if there are any issues, we'll be able to isolate the new import from the old.

The only issue that has persisted with your particular import (I tested your specific file a few times) is that some of your books are missing authors. This is a larger issue with our import system, which relies on Amazon for certain bits of data (like authors). Amazon is missing authors for the ISBNs in question. However, it hasn't been a widespread issue—the vast majority of your authors do import successfully—and I'm afraid the author issue isn't one we can fix quickly or easily. It would take a few weeks, minimum.

3.5/5 stars

The story of a English professor of creative writing and told through his memos and letters that he writes as recommendations for students and colleagues. Dark, funny and a little bit sad. Does anyone know how to add a date read from before 2005? Looking at where I can enter that, the calendar only goes back so far, and I'm not sure how to enter a year from before then.

Thanks so much!

>87 LibraryCin: 2005 is when LibraryThing began, which is, I think, why the calendar only goes that far back. That said, you can absolutely enter in previous dates manually, rather than clicking the calendar icon. Just make sure they're in MM/DD/YYYY format!

>88 lorannen: Perfect - thank you! That makes sense, the calendar year being when LT started.

lorannen ... when I go to enter it asks for YYYY/MM/DD
I'm okay doing it that way, but it sure is an adjustment from how I typically enter dates here in the US of A.
Is there a setting that I'm missing to enter as MM/DD/YYYY?

>90 BookConcierge: Where exactly are you seeing this? There are a few date fields on LT, and I believe some of the older ones may ask for YYYY/MM/DD, but the pop-up boxes for reading dates ("Date started" and "Date finished," respectively) model it as MM/DD/YYYY.

ETA: I forgot there was a setting for this, I'm sorry! Here's where you can adjust your date format: https://www.librarything.com/settings/account

>91 lorannen: When I click on the Date Started and Date Finished fields in my catalog, the suggested entry style is D-MM-YYYY, although I've noticed it will parse many things such as "feb 19" or "yesterday" or whatever, and put it into that format.

I have a vague memory that what format these dates display in is a user-customizable setting, but I may be breathing in too many paint fumes from my landlord's repainting of the hallway outside my apartment.

Edited to add: If I go to my Home page, click the Settings button, and look at the options under Account Settings, there is a place to specify preferred display style of dates. It's not clear to me which dates that refers to — but post dates here in Talk do not follow the format I have set, which leads me to believe they may be for reading dates and perhaps other things?

>92 rosalita: Aha, thanks! I should have thought to dig around in settings. I'd forgotten about that, since I selected by preferred date format years ago.

You're correct—Talk date formats aren't customizable, but stuff in your catalog is! Here's the link to the Account Settings page:
