Welcome to my Movie Blogging thread!

The name should explain it. As I do with the books I read, I review and keep track of the movies I watch as well. As a Peace Corps Volunteer I seem to be watching a lot more movies than ever before. Please feel free to lurk and take/leave recommendations or comments. I love comments and conversations.

If you are interested in the actual books I am reading, refer HERE
If you are interested in the movies I watched last year, refer HERE

1. Star Trek (2009)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Minutes: 127
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Rewatch)

Summary:
The brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father's legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful, time-traveling Romulan creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time.

Thoughts:
In order to watch Star Trek: Into Darkness I had to rewatch this movie to remind myself of some things. I don't know much about the Star Trek universe, never having watched the TV shows. I kind of want to get into them now, but maybe later when I don't have a zillion other shows on the list. :) Because I don't know the universe of the franchise I am sure there were many things about this movie that I didn't understand well, but I still enjoyed the movie. Kirk was a little brash for me, but I assume that is his character. I did enjoy the way this movie played with alternate realities.

2. Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Minutes: 132
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Spur of Moment)

Summary:
After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.

Thoughts:
This was a nice add on to the first movie. I think it allowed for some needed character development in Kirk, and allowed the friendship between him and Spock to develop more. I do have to say that I like Spock more than Kirk. Again, there were things that were said or implied that I did not fully grasp, probably because I have not seen any other Star Trek movie or show. But it was still understandable enough. I think heard there is a third movie being made for production in 2017. These are not movies I will buy but it's possible that I will be watching them again in the future.

3. Mean Girls (2004)
Genre: Comedy
Minutes: 97
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Rewatch)

Summary:
Cady Heron is a hit with The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new school, until she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George.

Thoughts:
I remember this movie got on my nerves because of the spot on high school drama. And yet at the same time, because it's so spot on and well played I really like the movie too. Not something I can watch many times, but every so often it's a nice thing to remind yourself that you don't need to follow the crowd. You should just be yourself. That's true even outside of high school.

4. Miss Congeniality (2000)
Genre: Action, Comedy, Crime
Minutes: 109
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Rewatch)

Summary:
An FBI agent must go undercover in the Miss United States beauty pageant to prevent a group from bombing the event.

Thoughts:
Ah, I forgot home much I liked this movie. Absolutely love it. I might have to buy it. It's not the kind of movie you can watch over and over again, but once in a few years is perfect. And Sandra Bullock is rocking this movie. She's a great actress as it is. Great movie.

5. Liar Liar (1997)
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy
Minutes: 86
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Rewatch)

Summary:
A fast track lawyer can't lie for 24 hours due to his son's birthday wish after the lawyer turns his son down for the last time.

Thoughts:
This movie always gave me giggles. Jim Carey gives me giggles. Sometimes he's a little too much over the top for me but it works here. I might keep this one on my disc for when I'm having a bad day and need a cheer up.

6. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Genre: Animation, Family, Fantasy
Minutes: 76
Audience: PG
Rating: 3/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but doesn't quite understand the concept.

Thoughts:
My sister has been trying to get me to watch this movie for ages. I can see why she likes it. I did enjoy the music, and the story is pretty cute. But it's one of those movies I will watch once and then probably never again. I was never a fan of Halloween and all the monsters, etc. I don't think I ever will be, so this movie just didn't inspire a warm feeling in me. If it hadn't had the great music I might have given up on it. But the music was great.

7. The Truman Show (1998)
Genre: Drama
Minutes: 103
Audience: PG
Rating: 4/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
An insurance salesman/adjuster discovers his entire life is actually a T.V. show.

Thoughts:
Wow. This was a really interesting movie. The idea of someone's whole life as a TV show, his conception, his birth, his first day of school, everything: that's crazy. What's even crazier is that people would watch a show like that their entire lives. And yet, this actually happens in real life. We spend our lives watching movies and shows about other people and we do it more often now-a-days. So much of our time is spent on watching TV. I really enjoyed the arguments the director of the Truman show made at the end about which world is better. This movie was very well done. I enjoyed seeing Carey in a less over the top role as well.

8. 12 Monkeys (1995)
Genre: Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Minutes: 129
Audience: R
Rating: 2/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.

Thoughts:
This was not the movie I was expecting from the summary I saw in imdb.com. I admit I was only half paying attention while watching this movie because I wasn't that interested. Oops. Interesting premise. And I usually like time travel stories and movies but this one was a little too confusing. And not... i don't know. I didn't like the lead role that much I guess.

9. Lincoln (2012)
Genre: Biography, Drama, History
Minutes: 150
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Spur of the Moment)

Summary:
As the Civil War continues to rage, America's president struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on the decision to emancipate the slaves.

Thoughts:
If you like history then this is a great movie. It's long and there is not really any action except that of word play, but it is well directed and well played. I found myself doing things while watching this movie since it has a slow story but I still highly enjoyed it. I liked how it brought Lincoln to life for me. It's guaranteed to do that in my opinion.

10. Zombieland (2009)
Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Horror
Minutes: 88
Audience: R
Rating: 2/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting tough guy trying to find the last Twinkie, and a pair of sisters trying to get to an amusement park join forces to travel across a zombie-filled America.

Thoughts:
Ugh, this was a sucky movie to watch after such a good one. I don't like zombies. I never will. These zombies grossed me out even more than usual. I don't know why, but this rendition of zombie made me want to gag in revulsion. And the story wasn't really all that great. Something cute and fluffy if you took the zombies out of it.

11. Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006)
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Fantasy
Minutes: 88
Audience: R
Rating: 3/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
A film set in a strange afterlife way station that has been reserved for people who have committed suicide.

Thoughts:
This was actually a really interesting movie. It had a few weird parts, but overall I liked it. I really liked the woman's haircut too. I might try it next time I cut my hair... Anyways good movie, but probably not for all.

12. Heores: Season 1 (2006)
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Minutes: 1,035
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 5/5
(Rewatch)

Summary:
The lives of common people, who discover they have superpowers, intertwine in order to save the world from different threats.

Thoughts:
I loved this show when I first watched it a few years ago. Then I watched Star Trek and encountered Spock whose actor plays Sylar in this show and it reminded me how much I liked it. So I had to rewatch it of course since it's been a few years. :) If you like science fiction stories about people with supernatural powers and have not seen this movie, you must watch it.

13. Prozac Nation (2001)
Genre: Drama
Minutes: 95
Audience: R
Rating: 3/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
A young woman struggles with depression during her first year at Harvard. Based on Elizabeth Wurtzel's novel.

Thoughts:
I related to parts of this movie but not to others. I don't know that someone who hasn't had depression would get the important parts of this movie. It takes first hand knowledge of the mental illness to truly see how it effects someone. Not sure that overall I liked the movie, but it has a lot going for it. I think it's based off of a book? I think I would be more interested in reading the book.

14. Heores: Season 2 (2007)
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Minutes: 495
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 5/5
(Rewatch)

Summary:
The lives of common people, who discover they have superpowers, intertwine in order to save the world from different threats.

Thoughts:
Now I need to get my hands on the third and fourth season. I don't know why this season was so short, except that it seemed best to end it where they did. It feels like a middle book in a trilogy, not quite as good as the first and last book, but needed as a transition.

15. The Big Bang Theory: Season 4 (2010)
Genre: Comedy
Minutes: 528
Audience: PG
Rating: 5/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
A woman who moves into an apartment across the hall from two brilliant but socially awkward physicists shows them how little they know about life outside of the laboratory.

Thoughts:
I was worried about how Amy would affect the dynamics of the group but I really like what the directors and writers are doing with her character. There were a couple of really really funny episodes in this season. I really enjoyed it, though I did have to take a break for a while. Too many of these episodes in a row and your can get an overdose. :)

16. The Last Samurai (2003)
Genre: Action, Drama, History
Minutes: 154
Audience: R
Rating: 5/5
(Rewatch)

Summary:
An American military adviser embraces the Samurai culture he was hired to destroy after he is captured in battle.

Thoughts:
I'm really into movies about embracing a different culture right now for obvious reasons, so this was right up my alley this year. I know this movie isn't historically accurate but I found that I didn't care. It was a powerful movie told in a good way. I don't usually like Tom Cruise all that much but he does this movie justice. I think I might buy this one to add it to my war movie collection.

17. Once Upon a Time: Season 1 (2011)
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Romance
Minutes: 968
Audience: PG
Rating: 5/5
(Watch List)

Summary:
A young woman with a troubled past is drawn to a small town in Maine where fairy tales are to be believed.

Thoughts:
This was a great show. It hooks you from the very beginning and doesn't let up. It helps that I am a fan of the fairytales. And the writers of this show do a really great job with the fairytales. I like the differences. And I like the parallels made between the show's two realities. With the ending as it stands, I'm antsy to see what happens in season two.

18. The Big Bang Theory: Season 5 (2011-2012)
Genre: Comedy
Minutes: 528
Audience: PG
Rating: 5/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
A woman who moves into an apartment across the hall from two brilliant but socially awkward physicists shows them how little they know about life outside of the laboratory.

Thoughts:
Still as good as ever. I absolutely loved a few of these episodes. They had me rolling on the ground. That's the point of this show but some stick out more than others. I'm really glad I ending up finding this series while I was here in Africa. It's makes the day better when it's been a tough one.

19. The Big Bang Theory: Season 6 (2012-2013)
Genre: Comedy
Minutes: 528
Audience: PG
Rating: 5/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
A woman who moves into an apartment across the hall from two brilliant but socially awkward physicists shows them how little they know about life outside of the laboratory.

Thoughts:
I'm going through these faster than I thought I would. That can say things about a show: addicting. Loved the romance treks going on here and the geeky references. Recommended for those with nerd pride.

20. Once Upon a Time: Season 2 (2012-2013)
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Romance
Minutes: 968
Audience: PG
Rating: 5/5
(Watch List)

Summary:
A young woman with a troubled past is drawn to a small town in Maine where fairy tales are to be believed.

Thoughts:
Once again this show was very intriguing. It hooks you right away. I really enjoy the twists put on the fairy tales. It makes it darker but more realistic at the same time. I like that there is redemption here in this season as well; that it isn't just good versus evil. Recommended.

21. America's Next Top Model (2015)
Genre: Reality-TV, Modeling
Minutes: 720
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(New)

Summary:
A cyclical competition where women from all over the U.S. compete for the honor of being America's next "it girl" in the modeling world.

Thoughts:
This show has dragged on quite a bit lately. So it's good news that the show is finally done, stopping after this season. I have a hate love relationship with this show. I love the modeling and the photo shoots but I really don't like the "reality-tv"-ness and all the drama. But while I had good internet service this weekend, I decided I would watch this last season to conclude the show. I'm really glad that the winner won. I was rooting for him. It was also really awesome that this season had a Ghanaian woman as a contestant - a US citizen with her parents living in Ghana. Because I am living in Ghana right now. Weirdly awesome!

22. The Big Bang Theory: Season 7 (2013-2014)
Genre: Comedy
Minutes: 528
Audience: PG
Rating: 5/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
A woman who moves into an apartment across the hall from two brilliant but socially awkward physicists shows them how little they know about life outside of the laboratory.

Thoughts:
Another big and exciting season! I'm going to cry when I get caught up on this show. I guess that's what reruns are for, huh? The ending was awesome; it makes me really curious with how that situation will go. The writers and producers have done a really good job with adding all kinds of twists without letting the show or character's get weird.

23. The Big Bang Theory: Season 8 (2014)
Genre: Comedy
Minutes: 528
Audience: PG
Rating: 5/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
A woman who moves into an apartment across the hall from two brilliant but socially awkward physicists shows them how little they know about life outside of the laboratory.

Thoughts:
Oh no! This is the last season I have. Now I will have to wait until I meet another volunteer with the next two seasons. That ending is going to have me biting my nails until I get them. As I think I've mentioned, I'm so glad I ended up watching this series.

24. Once Upon a Time: Season 3 (2013-2014)
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Romance
Minutes: 968
Audience: PG
Rating: 5/5

Summary:
A young woman with a troubled past is drawn to a small town in Maine where fairy tales are to be believed.

Thoughts:
Poor Hook! Things work out for him in the end but man, his hurtful eyes just pierced my heart. :) This season felt like two in one, since the beginning half is set in Neverland and the second half is set in Storybrook. I liked both. A lot. And the ending! Oh I'm excited to see what's next. Just have to get my hands on them now.

25. If I Stay (2014)
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Music
Minutes: 107
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Watch List)

Summary:
Life changes in an instant for young Mia Hall after a car accident puts her in a coma. During an out-of-body experience, she must decide whether to wake up and live a life far different than she had imagined. The choice is hers if she can go on.

Thoughts:
I didn't want to watch this movie for a long time, because I read the books and absolutely loved them. I worried that the movie wouldn't compare. It doesn't, the bane of most movies that follow books. However, it's been enough time since I've read the book that I was able to, now, disassociate the movie from the book and think of them separately. This allowed me to watch the movie and enjoy it for itself. It was good. Not phenomenal but good. Now I'm gonna go buy the books and reread them so I can revel in the wonderfulness of them.

26. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)
Genre: Drama, War
Minutes: 94
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
Set during World War II, a story seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences.

Thoughts:
Wow, this was an intense movie. It didn't seem like it until the end and you see how it all culminates up to the horrible climax. It makes me wonder at the consequences after the ending. What happens to the family left? Does the father change his ways? Or does he go on with the atrocious things he thinks. I can't imagine what it would be like to live during the Holocaust. I can't imagine having to make the decision to speak against something or stay quiet but safe. A movie recommended to all.

27. The Bucket List (2007)
Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Drama
Minutes: 97
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Spur of the Moment)

Summary:
Two terminally ill men escape from a cancer ward and head off on a road trip with a wish list of to-dos before they die.

Thoughts:
This was a great movie. There was no reason to cry throughout the movie until the very end, and even those were semi-joyous tears. I love the idea here, or living life to it's fullest even if you do it at the end. I just wish I had the kind of money to do what these two men did. Everyone should make a bucket list and live life crossing items off of it.

28. Batman (1989)
Genre: Action, Adventure
Minutes: 126
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 2/5
(Spur of the Moment)

Summary:
The Dark Knight of Gotham City begins his war on crime with his first major enemy being the clownishly homicidal Joker.

Thoughts:
I didn't really enjoy this movie all that much, but I feel as if I should watch these earlier versions of Batman at least once. I never really got into Batman in the first place. I get that he's supposed to be a different kind of superhero than most of the other comic heroes like Superman and such. Batman is darker, without powers. Even still, I always found his movies to be almost too dark for enjoyment. But like I said I feel that I should have these under mt belt.

29. Batman Returns (1992)
Genre: Action
Minutes: 126
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 2/5
(Spur of the Moment)

Summary:
When a corrupt businessman and the grotesque Penguin plot to take control of Gotham City, only Batman can stop them, while the Catwoman has her own agenda.

Thoughts:
I didn't realize that Batman and Catwoman were in the same universe so that was kind of interesting, but as with the first movie, I couldn't bring myself to like this movie all that much. The effects were better, it being a 90's movie, but it was still not really up my alley.

30. Hellboy (2004)
Genre: Action, Fantasy, Horror
Minutes: 122
Audience: PG-13
Rating:4/5
(Rewatch)

Summary:
A demon, raised from infancy after being conjured by and rescued from the Nazis, grows up to become a defender against the forces of darkness.

Thoughts:
I think I liked this movie more this second time watching it through. I enjoyed Red's wit and humor. And he looks so badass. I ended up watching this movie because I haven't seen the second movie and got a copy of it. So here was a rewatch before I moved on to the second movie.

31. Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Minutes: 120
Audience: PG-13
Rating:4/5
(Spur of the Moment)

Summary:
The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so Hellboy and his team must save the world from the rebellious creatures.

Thoughts:
Not as good as the first movie, but not bad. The ending was a little confusing.

32. The God Who Wasn't There (2005)
Genre: Documentary, History
Minutes: 62
Audience: NR
Rating: 3/5
(Spur of the Moment)

Summary:
Did Jesus exist? This film starts with that question, then goes on to examine Christianity as a whole.

Thoughts:
This wasn't really that great of a documentary. It felt like one guy's amateur attempt at trying to prove something. It's got some good points but I've seen better films that deal with this question.

33. History of the World: Part 1 (1981)
Genre: Comedy
Minutes: 92
Audience: R
Rating: 3/5
(Spur of the Moment)

Summary:
Mel Brooks brings his one-of-a-kind comic touch to the history of mankind covering events from the Old Testament to the French Revolution in a series of episodic comedy vignettes.

Thoughts:
This wasn't what I was expecting at all. It was more comedy than fact. Something to watch so you can laugh about it all I guess. And while it wasn't what I was looking for, it was fairly enjoyable. Nothing phenomenal.

34. Religulous (2008)
Genre: Documentary, Comedy, War
Minutes: 101
Audience: R
Rating: 3/5

Summary:
Bill Maher's take on the current state of world religion.

Thoughts:
This was a better documentary than the one above. But I'm always leery of documentaries. They tell you what they want to tell you. with film now-a-days, it's real easy to cut out certain words or ends to speeches so that the message is different from what the speaker intended. That's true of any documentary. And yet, I did like this one. I can't say for sure that all that was said was actually meant when the interviews were taking place, but the message of the documentary is important I think. Especially the end.

We were watching tailors of new movies coming out in 2016 and there was one about Zoolander 2. And when I said I hadn't seen the first movie my companions immediately brought it up so we could watch it. It was funny, entertaining, but not much else.

Audience: PG
Rating: 5/5
(Spur of the Moment)

Summary:
When the evil spirit Pitch launches an assault on Earth, the Immortal Guardians team up to protect the innocence of children all around the world.

Thoughts:
I loved this movie. It was so well done, and I love how each character had their own quirks that you don't usually associate with their characters. Santa as Russian? Brilliant. I really really liked Jack Frost too. Which I think was the point, but still. And the animation just brought it all together into a great package. Highly recommended.

37. Chappie (2015)
Genre: Action, Crime, Sci-Fi
Minutes: 120

(Spur of the Moment)

Summary:
In the near future, crime is patrolled by a mechanized police force. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself.

Thoughts:
This was an emotional movie. Not in the crying emotional way, but in a it hits you hard. I'll be thinking about this movie for a long time, I can tell already. I expected a movie about intelligent robots, but there was so much more to this. This was made very well for our day and age, where movies about IA robots are common.

38. Quest for Fire (1981)
Genre: Adventure, Drama, History
Minutes: 100
Audience: R
Rating: 4/5

This story takes place in prehistoric time when three prehistoric tribesmen search for a new fire source.

Thoughts:
I've been wanting to see this movie for years, ever since I got into the Anthropology field. I swear there was this impression that this is a must see movie for any and all anthropologists. Finally I found a copy. Glad I finally got to watch this. It does make me want to reread Jean M. Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear book again. Or find some other prehistoric books that are just as good. :)

40. Once Upon a Time: Season 4 (2014-2015)
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Romance
Minutes: 1,013
Audience: PG
Rating: 5/5
(Watch List)

Summary:
A young woman with a troubled past is drawn to a small town in Maine where fairy tales are to be believed.

Thoughts:
Here was another great season to the series. The first half included Elsa and Anna from Frozen and the second half included Maleficent, Ursula and Cruella. Both parts were great. The second part had a few points where I thought something else could have been done to make the plot twists better, but it all worked out well by the end. I'm interested in seeing how dark the next season is going to be. But it's in production right now so I'm going to have to wait a while. :(

41. The Good Dinosaur (2015)

Minutes: 93
Audience: PG
Rating: 4/5
(Spur of the Moment)

Summary:
In a world where dinosaurs and humans live side-by-side, an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend.

Thoughts:
This was a cite movie. I didn't know anything about it when I grabbed it, but I figured if Pixar made it then it must be cute. It was more emotional than I expected. Maybe it was the music but I felt teary eyed multiple times in this movie. I enjoyed the theme of friendship and sacrifice. A good family movie. :)

42. The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980)
Genre: Action, Comedy
Minutes: 109
Audience: PG
Rating: 4/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
A comic allegory about a traveling Bushman who encounters modern civilization and its stranger aspects, including a clumsy scientist and a band of revolutionaries.

Thoughts:
This was a giggle fest. I loved it. I'm glad I watched it after living in Africa myself for a time. I have to say that I saw so many things that probably would not have processed much to me if I'd watched it before being here in Africa and seeing so many of the same things. This is a great movie, but I won't recommended it to everyone, because I probably loved it so much due to my background in anthropology plus my status of living in Africa. But it is great.

Summary:

Thoughts:
This was a great movie. It made me realize that I forget to appreciate how beautiful life and the world is sometimes. I get stuck in the rut of just living and not appreciating. This movie made me realize I need to again. And directing of this movie was great. Very good, and one movie I would highly recommend.

45. Seven Years in Tibet (1997)
Genre: Adventure, Biography, Drama
Minutes: 136
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Rewatch)

Summary:
True story of Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountain climber who became friends with the Dalai Lama at the time of China's takeover of Tibet.

Thoughts:
I liked watching this movie here while I'm living in Africa, the only white person in a village of another culture. Although now I can see that there is so much missing here that could have been fascinating to learn/see. However the movie spans a number of years so there's only so much that can be shown and still keep the attention of the mass audience. But I think I saw this was based off of a book? Maybe. If so, I might see if I can get my hands on it. There's also history here, although I don't know how much of it is fiction and how much is actual history. A great movie regardless of that answer.

Minutes: 97
Audience: PG
Rating: 4/5

47. The Help (2011)

(Watch List)

Summary:
An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African-American maids' point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis.

Thoughts:
I couldn't help but compare this movie to the book. And the book was so much more powerful. I not sure any movie based of the book could compare, regardless of the actors/actresses or directors. Having said that, it was pretty well done and followed the book pretty fairly for a 2 1/2 hour movie. I probably would have liked it better if I had seen the movie before reading the book.

51. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy
Minutes: 144
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Rewatch)

Summary:

52. The Hunger Games (2012)

Thoughts:
I remember not liking this movie as much because it was so different from the last two. But I can see the logical reason for the plot. I was excited to get to Part 2, since I haven't seen it yet. It was the reason why I did this marathon. However, it turns out I don't have a good copy of the second part. So I will have to wait. Oh well. Soon, I hope.

55. Batman Begins (2005)
Genre: Action, Adventure
Minutes: 140
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Rewatch)

Summary:
After training with his mentor, Batman begins his war on crime to free the crime-ridden Gotham City from corruption that the Scarecrow and the League of Shadows have cast upon it.

Thoughts:
I forgot how funny this movie was due to the butler. Which was played by an absolute fantastic actor. I was never really into the batman movies because they were so dark compared to other superhero movies. The fact that Batman doesn't have superpowers itself sets the movie to a different tone. But after watching the older versions of the movie I wanted to see these newer movies again. Plus Batman vs. Superman is coming out soon.

56. Deadpool (2016)

Minutes: 108

Summary:
Blade forms an uneasy alliance with the vampire council in order to combat the Reaper vampires who feed on vampires.

Thoughts:
Not one of my favorite vampire movies. I did enjoy seeing the clear computer fight scenes. It looked like something out of a video game at some points which was just awesome to see, but also took away from the movie itself. Guess I'm just used to the great graphics of my age.

Thoughts:
This was an interesting movie. Not what I was expecting. Being old enough to know what happened with the Iraq war, I was familiar with the politics of the matter, but this movie put the war into more perspective for me. I'm a visual person so it takes seeing things to make me fully realize implications of things and to fully understand them. This movie did that for me. Having said that, I won't be watching it again. Summary:
A poet falls for a beautiful courtesan whom a jealous duke covets in this stylish musical, with music drawn from familiar 20th century sources.

Thoughts:
I'm reading a book that's a musical in book format and it made me want to watch a musical. This was the first one that came to mind so I decided to watch it again. Most of my family doesn't like this movie even though they like musicals. I admit it's a little more bizarre than other musicals but I think that's it's charm. And it's so hysterical at times. I was laughing a loud at parts. I really enjoy the movie and highly recommend it, even though my previous recommendations fell flat.

83. San Andreas (2015)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
Minutes: 114
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 3/5
(Watch List)

Summary:
In the aftermath of a massive earthquake in California, a rescue-chopper pilot makes a dangerous journey with his ex-wife across the state in order to rescue his daughter.

Thoughts:
This was such a corny movie. And realistically a lot of things didn't make sense. The fact that people fell six stories and lived with nothing more than a bloody ear that magically gets clean in the next frame. Plus the whole movie is Johnson disregarding his job of saving hundreds of people and instead haring off with company vehicles to save his family. Emotionally some of it makes sense but this movie failed all my expectations, all except the earthquake scenes.

Thoughts:
This was awesome. It followed the original animation very well. And the animals were so realistic, Although I'm pretty sure they were all computer generated. A great family movie. Maybe a little scary for the small crowd. Highly recommended.

I was really confused with this ending until I realized they're making a second part to season 4, coming out in a few months. I thought this season dragged a little more than the previous ones but that could just be me. Then here at the end, there's a huge time jump of many years at least- maybe a decade. Setting up something big coming soon I suspect. I'm looking forward to even more Vikings.

Summary:
Barry Allen wakes up 9 months after he was struck by lightning and discovers that the bolt gave him the power of super speed. With his new team and powers, Barry becomes "The Flash" and fights crime in Central City.

Thoughts:
This is an awesome show. I must really love the superhero shows because this was right in my alley. I thought about watching The Arrow before this one after I saw that there were characters overlapping. But in the end I decided it didn't matter too much. I'll get to it after this show, because I'm becoming addicted to this one.

87. The Time Travelers Wife (2009)
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Romance
Minutes: 107
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Watch List)

Summary:
A romantic drama about a Chicago librarian with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, and the complications it creates for his marriage.

Thoughts:
The book was better; of course. But the movie wasn't too bad. I enjoyed the refresher of the story I love so much. I think both actor and actress did very well. Recommended if you like stories about time traveling.

88. Flash: Season 2 (2015-2016)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama

Summary:

Thoughts:
Wow; that ending to this season was crazy. I have no clue what is going to happen now. It was a risky thing those directors did. The rest of the season was pretty great. I don't think there was a single episode that I thought was boring or transitional. There's always some action going on. I liked that they brought the face of Wells back. There were a few technicalites about Barry's speed that I thought might have been mumbled through because of some contradictions but as an enjoyment factor, I really really enjoyed this season.

Thoughts:
I'm a big X-Men fan, so of course I really liked this movie. It makes me want to go see if there's anyway to read the comics easily. There's a few characters in this one that I don't know. I'm also curious to the fate of a few of these characters that don't show up in the later (earlier?) movies. So glad I got to see this so soon after it came out.

Summary:

Thoughts:
Need a funny movie the whole family enjoys. That's what I needed so this one made the top of the list. I can always get a good belly-aching laugh from watching this movie. Carter is a bit of a pervert but that's only a small thing to detract from the great movie.

91. Rush Hour 2 (2001)
Genre: Action, Comedy, Crime
Minutes: 90
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5

Summary:

Thoughts:
This second movie is the best out of the three in my opinion. It's definitely the funniest.

Genre: Action, Comedy, Crime
Minutes: 91
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5

Summary:

Thoughts:
This one is my least favorite out of the three movies in this series. Carter's perverseness really rubs me the wrong way this time. It's too over the top. And things aren't nearly as funny. However, the bloopers are always so great!

Rating: 4/5
(Spur of Moment)

Summary:
Spoiled billionaire playboy Oliver Queen is missing and presumed dead when his yacht is lost at sea. He returns five years later a changed man, determined to clean up the city as a hooded vigilante armed with a bow.

Thoughts:
After watching the Flash I was into watching another superhero show. And since the Arrow plays a role in some of the Flash episodes I decided to go ahead and watch his show. I wasn't sure how I would like it since I loved The Flash and The Arrow is much darker than that. But turns out I like Oliver Queen just as much, if in a different way. You still root for him, no matter than he's more violent. I'm looking forward to seeing where this show goes from here. Because, clearly, this is just the beginning.

94. Game of Thrones: Season 6 (2016)
Genre: Adventure, Drama, Fantasy
Minutes: 550
Audience: R
Rating: 5/5

Summary:
While a civil war brews between several noble families in Westeros, the children of the former rulers of the land attempt to rise up to power. Meanwhile a forgotten race, bent on destruction, plans to return after thousands of years in the North.

Thoughts:
Can you say wow? There were a lot of loose ends tied up in this season. Like, a whole bunch. Some of this was from the books, but the rest (maybe half) is new. It's going to be interesting to see what happens now that the writers and directors have free reign with the story. I know Martin told them about some of his plans for some of the characters, but beyond that, it's up to them. I feel that the ending of this season cemented the start of the end. We have four queens now. That spells for something very different than what came before. I'm very excited to see what happens.

Summary:
A young fugitive prince and princess must stop a villain who unknowingly threatens to destroy the world with a special dagger that enables the magic sand inside to reverse time.

Thoughts:
Needed a movie to watch with the family that had some action in it. I liked this movie less than I did the first time I watched it, but it's still full of action, romance, great stunts and a good story.

96. London Has Fallen (2016)
Genre: Action, Crime, Drama
Minutes: 99
Audience: R
Rating: 3/5
(Recommended)

Summary:
In London for the Prime Minister's funeral, Mike Banning discovers a plot to assassinate all the attending world leaders.

Thoughts:
This one was a little too violent and vulgar for me. I would have thought not since I have nothing against war movies. But this war movie didn't do it for me. Probably because it wasn't war, it was a isolated terrorist incident. Lots of swearing, lots of stunts and shootings that realistically would have killed all the characters right away, and not a compelling plot line for me.

Summary:
Blacksmith Will Turner teams up with eccentric pirate "Captain" Jack Sparrow to save his love, the governor's daughter, from Jack's former pirate allies, who are now undead.

Thoughts:

99. Arrow: Season 2 (2013-14)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Crime
Minutes: 966
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(Watch List)

Summary:
Spoiled billionaire playboy Oliver Queen is missing and presumed dead when his yacht is lost at sea. He returns five years later a changed man, determined to clean up the city as a hooded vigilante armed with a bow.

Thoughts:
The second season introduces a lot of new/old characters and things get intense, especially towards the end. I was way excited to see Barry appear in this season and am now eagerly awaiting seeing some more of him in the next seasons too. But so far, someone big always dies at the end of these seasons. It makes me worry about who will be next.

100. Once Upon A Time: Season 5 (2015-16)
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Romance
Minutes: 966
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 5/5
(Watch List)

Summary:
A young woman with a troubled past is drawn to a small town in Maine where fairy tales are to be believed.

Thoughts:
Man, I really thought that this was going to be the last season. What with all those characters from previous seasons coming back in the form of ghosts that the characters help to move on, I felt sure that things were wrapping up. And then came the cliffhanger, like always. And a new evil. Well, I do love the twists these fairy tales have and I enjoy the show, even if some parts are a little corny. I'll watch another season, but I stand by my opinion that that would have been the perfect place to end the show.

101. The Legend of Tarzan (2016)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
Minutes: 110
Audience: PG-13
Rating: 4/5
(New)

Summary:
Tarzan, having acclimated to life in London, is called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment.

Thoughts:
This was better than I worried. From the trailers, I felt that it could have gone either way - been terrible or been pretty okay. It's fell into the latter category thankfully. I liked that it wasn't just a retelling of the old classic tale, but something new. There were a few unrealistic stunts but overall I thought it was a good story. A little more character development between Jane and Tarzan as the adults they are would have been perfect but I doubt there would have been time for such development.

Summary:

Thoughts:
The third season was great for the first 2/3 of the episodes. Then it got dark. I didn't necessarily like how things played out, all the secrets Oliver was keeping from his friends. I can see why it happened the way it did but I didn't like it. I'm hoping things work out back into how things were before. I did enjoy seeing Oliver and Felicity at the end. I'm looking forward to finally getting caught up with this series.

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Music
Minutes: 990

Rating: 4/5
(Spur of the Moment)

Summary:
A group of ambitious misfits try to escape the harsh realities of high school by joining a glee club, where they find strength, acceptance and, ultimately, their voice, while working to pursue dreams of their own.

Thoughts:
I figured I would like this show. I do! I love the music and I love the character development. There are some characters that annoy me like crazy, but I'm hoping that means they will grow the most. Plus I'm way excited to see Finn turn into the hunk he is in The Flash. ;) Great show here.

104. Daredevil: Season 1 (2015)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Crime
Minutes: 715
Audience: R
Rating: 4/5
(Watch List)

Summary:
Matt Murdock, with his other senses superhumanly enhanced, fights crime as a blind lawyer by day, and vigilante by night.

Thoughts:
This was a brutal show: intense and ugly. But there were parts, like when Mat was talking to his priest that it just made so much sense. It clicked with my head and emotions and I felt like they had hit the head of the nail spot on in regards to good and evil. This show is realistically gritty. It's definitely not a binge-type of show though - to intense for that. But very good. I'll be watching the next season soon.

Summary:
Matt Murdock, with his other senses superhumanly enhanced, fights crime as a blind lawyer by day, and vigilante by night.

Thoughts:
I went through this season much quicker than the first season. There were more diverse and interesting things happening in this season. Plus there were other "heroes" in this one. As an aside, I love how badass Matt looks in his costume and yet looks so "cute" outside of it (for lack of a better word). Everyone in this show is growing on me. Although I suppose this means I need to watch Jessica Jones now if I want to want The Defenders which has more of Daredevil in it. Anyways, it's a good show and it seems to be getting better the more seasons it goes.

This was an amazing movie. A part of my awe and reaction is because I just spent a year living in Ghana, Africa. And if I hadn't known this was set in Uganda, I would have sworn it took place in Ghana. There are so many similarities. So many! So besides an amazing and inspiring movie I also really got the context and surroundings; even the way of talking and acting. This is such a good representation of what Africa is like. I can't even begin to describe how much this movie touches on all the important parts. I only wish that others could appreciate it as much as I wish they could. regardless of if you don't get out of the movie everything I did, this is a fantastic movie and I highly recommend that everyone watch it!!
