I currently listen to my CDs on:
Sony Walkman D-EJ011 CD Player
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-k...
However they are not made anymore and are very expensive on Amazon.
Ebay has them used.
Does anyone out there know of a CD player as good as Sony Walkman D-EJ011?
Other brands? Do you want to sell one?
Notice: yes, I want a CD player and not an ipod or anything else.
I think audiobooks are great!

I know this is so frustrating. I just bought a new car and found that having a CD player is no longer even an option without spending thousands of dollars for a premium sound package. I thought it would be no problem to find a plug in CD player but they've ceased to exist. All my music is on CDs as are all the audiobooks I used to listen to in the car. I did find an off brand mini CD/DVD player but am now flummoxed in finding a cord to run it through my car's sound system. I need a cable that has one end to fit in the headphone output and the other end needs to be a USB cable. Apparently there is no such animal and I'm not an electrician. Highly annoyed!

>2 varielle: I did the same thing when my car CD player conked out. Go ask the guys at KMart. They'll sell you the right cord.

CD players are still sold in Egypt, and are very common with Cassette/ Radio devices...
It`s strange to see these being old and replaced by ipod in other parts of the world...
It`s very sad to say that devices of 1980s (and even 1990s) began to see their end...

>2 varielle: I have a 'radio transmitter' that I use to play stuff in the car through the radio - it plugs into the device (mp3 player, CD player) into the headphone socket and then transmits a signal. I then tune both it and the car radio to a frequency not in use by locally received radio stations and can listen. My first one of these plugged into the old cigarette lighter socket (not sure what these are called now but they still seem to be there although they don't have the cigarette end any more), but the latest one runs of a couple of AA batteries or the car (handy if I've got a GPS plugged in).
>1 Urquhart: Unfortunately I can't offer any advice, I listen to my CDs either on my laptop, in the car (which still has a CD player) or a larger tape/CD player (not exactly portable). Otherwise I transfer them to an MP3 player.

Notes:
-many thanks for the answers
-i really don't like ipods
-the CD players from Target and Radio Shack are really Junk; really. Have tried them both.
-the Sony Walkman D-EJ011 CD Player that I love is still very popular in Japan as are cds.
Please advise what your favorite CD player is and I will try to track it down as an alternative.
Please do guide me on this.
Thanks.

I see them (decent Sony Walkmans (Walkmen?)) turn up in local charity shops in the $3-$5 range

And very frustratingly, a few of my favorite authors are no longer issuing their audio books in physical form, but in electronic editions only. I don't want to move on to another media style either.

I finally found a plug that I thought would run the CDs through the car's sound system. I was wrong. Waa!

>12 varielle: I was frustrated too, but my adult daughter fiddled with the wires and made sure that Aux was ON on the dash, and then fiddled with the wire connections again and I've had stereo sound out of the car speakers ever since. Would you like to borrow her?

And still no compact portable disc player that I can carry around and that I can buy???

This one would be fine:

I don't want to go to my car to listen to an audiobook.

I guess my question is does the machine need to be small enough to slip into a pocket or hang from your belt? Do you use it while walking or are you fairly stationary?

My player now just stays in the car because I've lost the AC plug cord. I just dragged it in here to take a closer look. It's a Sony DVP-FX780. Dimensions are 6" x 8" x 1 1/2" and it weighs 1.75 lbs. It has been reliable for three+ years. I listen to it for almost two hours a day, much more when I'm travelling. When I couldn't use it in the house anymore, I went and bought an off-brand model which died within two months. So, yeah, no more off-brands for me either.
It has a rechargeable battery. It can play without other power for an hour or so if it's fully charged. I can listen with the very tinny in board speaker, or plug in earphones, or plug in to car speakers. Presuming I could also plug in to other equipment with speakers as well.
RCA and Sylvania still sell something comparable for under $100.

Thank you for your feedback.
I read the reviews and am a bit hesitant with people saying...
I purchased this to play cds as well as dvds. It is advertised as playing both cds and dvds. So I buy it, wait for it to be shipped, get it all set up, and it will NOT play any cds! Only plays dvds!
Thank you anyway.

On Ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/Sony-Personal-CD-Players/15054/bn_2838288/i.html?_trksid...
The cheapest listed needs repairs, but others in the midrange look okay.

Thank you so much for keeping me in mind.
I guess I am suspicious of the item at that price...
Sony D-FJ041 Walkman Portable CD Player w/ FM AM Radio Tuner DFJ041 $26.99

Urquhart, if you're still looking after seven months now -
just email me / (or private message me here on LT) with your details, I'll send you one...
(not specifically the D-EJ011 you're looking for - but a similar Sony Walkman....)

Oh, right - sorry it took me a few days to notice. (Check your email.)
I just happen to have a Sony D-E206CK that's mostly cluttering up my home office; it's yours if you want it.
It seems to be from 1999 (so I don't know if it'll handle CD-Rs);

Bob
Thank you very much for the Sony D-E206CK that you sent.
We are both very grateful and wish to pay you, but as you suggested we will "pay it forward."
Our heartfelt thanks.
Ur and wife.

Glad to help; I hope it has all the features/capabilities you need.

Yay!
(I've made some friends here on LibraryThing, and met any number of nice people; and my wife and I have been the beneficiary of various kindnesses large and small. So the least I could do to repay them was to pass that forward in turn when an opportunity presented itself....)
