update:
I spoke with Richard today. He is okay, has a cold and is feeling a wee bit miserable. They made a nice dinner for the patients on Xmas eve, and a nice breakfast on Xmas day. The staff kindly gave each patient a at of sweats, which was VERY much appreciate by all. Since he can't shop or get to his own clothing or anything else right now, it has to make it difficult at times.I know that he has received some lovely gifts, but he is still working on a limited wardrobe, I think? But he is in good spirits and has not complained once about anything. He has spoken only of his gratitude to his friends.
No new reports on where he will go next, or when, but the holidays slow those things down, and hopefully any changes in the rules brought by the new year will be in his favor.

What everyone has said, Kath - thank you for keeping us posted. It's heartening to hear that he's being treated pretty darn well and for the most part is in good spirits. Hope his cold passes quickly.
35maggie1944
Weighing in, and agreeing with what's been said. I'll be very happy when we hear he is settled and can start his regular life, again.
36benitastrnad
I know that the Holidays slow things down. It is that way in all big bureaucracies - even the one in which I work. That said, now that the new year is hear and people will be back at work tomorrow things should start to move and I hope that a different living situation will be happening soon.
37GeezLouise
Missing you Richard hope you continue to do well and can come back soon.
38ty1997
I have been away from LT for some time and am just catching up on the news now. Richard, I wish you the speediest and recovery and return possible. The outpouring of love and support in the threads (and IRL) since your departure is a testament to you and the wonderful friends you have surrounded yourself with.

So, I managed to get a hold of Richard yesterday and he says Hi! to all and thanks everyone so much for the continued books and notes and phone calls. Here are some highlights from my conversation with him and he gave me permission to share:
--There were only 6 or 7 books at his facility when he arrived and now there are books spilling out everywhere. He has read 92 books whilst there.
--He has had several roommates and has liked all but one. Currently he has a Russian gentleman appropriately named Boris as a companion.
--Even though his living situation is not moving forward quickly, his pain level is much improved and they have hit upon a new drug that relieves the pain without the mental fuzziness of most narcotics like codeine. He is thrilled! Of course, I am scared because he was eerily smart with the fuzziness!
--I shared that he still ranked #3 for most prolific threads on Paul's stats list for last year which made him very happy. He was delighted that we still remember him (as if we wouldn't!) and that our efforts to keep his thread alive have paid off.
--He has had two potential living situations fall through. One was because he was white and male. As if he can change that?! So everyone still needs to send the Universe positive thoughts for a new assisted living place for Richard.
He sounded very upbeat now that the pain is better. But still loveably snarky. He wishes everyone a happy New Year and can't wait to be back. Cross your fingers that happens soon!

Yeah... He's doing okay. I talked to him last night, too. He is very excited about the library there, now :) I understand, I was very pleased to create the library where I used to work. I wasn't in a great mood, and he was feeling a wee bit off. Oh well, I'll talk to him again tonight.
I am beginning to feel some concern about placement.. and the storage issue. His bank won't "talk" to mine. This is a problem. His lack of ability to log onto any site, like PayPal to do a transfer doesn't help. Frustration ... hoping to get it sorted out before the end of the month.

Kath, is the same address you gave out at the end of 2014 still current? I have a little 'book' to send. It is the kind of book that fits into a normal sized envelope so doesn't cost the earth to post!

>75 jnwelch:... just a few mouseclicks, Joe.. nothing at all.
I spoke with himself today...
Richard is doing well. He has helped to build the library from 8 books to 100 or so. This does not count the ones he is keeping for himself. His FRIENDS have responded to his difficulties with a generosity unprecedented by any of those who work there. And the generosity continues....thank goodness. Some things, consumables like shampoo and body wash etc are pleasant little things that make his life a little nicer, and his friends keep sending. Clothing... he is making do with what has been sent, and is doing okay in that area.
He is doing well, and has received a lot of things that he needs, simply by friends calling him to ask what he needs and like magic, it appears. He is bringing out the best in his friends.
Still no plans for moving him, as he is still falling through the massive cracks in our system. But we will remain positive, and a place WILL be found. Set your intentions, people and send good energy for placement for him...

Beyond frustrated. When I was talking to rd last night, the phone kept cutting out, like it had a short in the cord or something. ITs a pay phone with an attached cord. rd jiggled it, and go it to work intermittently. I called back several times.
I have now called 4 times. It rings, someone picks it up and...nothing.

If these plans are failing then it wasn't meant for Richard. He does not need to be bounced around at this time in his life. Better to be where he is and find the right place.

UPDATE!!
Richard is in his new home. The place is still under renovation by the new owners, but he is glad to be there. Downside is that the internet is still dicey, and he will be posting when he can. All is well.
Internet there is not great.. soooo slow as to be maddening.. so he has been unable to post. He will be working on that. So, stay tuned.
He was swooning over his LL Bean bathrobe .. which is long enough and covers him well ...
( Help! I can't recall who sent that, so sorry Who was it? )
And all of the other great gifts he has received. Because of his friends he has several sets of sweats, underwear, socks and all sorts of great thing. When he received them, he did not necessarily get the box or anything saying who sent him what. He wants everyone to know how grateful he is, and asks that we forgive him if he is unable to connect people with gifts, but he is profoundly grateful.
Come to me for contact info... but he asks that phone calls wait a few days, maybe a week until they get him his own phone. I will let you know. Anyone who wants contact info.. I will do as before and share it if you ask me... and you can all sort of share it out after that, if you like.
When he signed the papers to become a resident his case manager said "You're home now" That made me cry.
So, I was hoping that he could give this update himself, but he is still working out a few kinks. . .
Soon though!

I think his what he is feeling right now is simple relief. I have received a lot of messages asking what he wants or needs. I asked him the same thing yesterday. I just don't think he even knows yet.
My suggestion to those who want to help him, is to just donate through Morphy's link. Then, when he is ready he can get what he needs from there. Especially if he does go with a wifi hotspot, he can pay through there. His money will go mostly to his new residence, now.
OH and some help... Tina suggested a wifi hotspot. I know nothing about them, and she is researching for a good one. The place does not have great internet just now. Hopefully that will change, but they are just getting up and running after a new owner came on board after Hurricane Sandy. They have very slow internet, and the provider is a not great one. I doubt that providing internet for the residents is Top of their list of to do's. I don't even know how they work, but I found one on Amazon...
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GJY6XI4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&...
Any suggestions, advice or input would be very welcome. He is going to try to figure out how to get his netbook and a few things out of storage.
So, we have a lot of different kinds of knowledge here. Anyone have any ideas? IS a hotspot a good idea for at leat the short term? Does anyone have one? It has to be no contract.....
Thoughts?

Any suggestions, advice or input would be very welcome. He is going to try to figure out how to get his netbook and a few things out of storage.

>173 mckait: Kath, I've no clue how it is in the USA but here in Switzerland we have different options:
- Our TV, landlines and internet are working through communication cables. With a subscription we have everything in the house and installed also wifi.
- Telecommunication firms are providing different subscriptions for smartphones. Therefore it is possible not only to phone but also to have internet.
- There is also the possibility of a dongle which could be used for the computer.
175Morphidae
I spoke with MrMorphy and he said he should get a dongle. It's a small thing like a jump drive that you plug into the computer. It costs about $20 a month. But he doesn't know if RD can get it without a contract. Maybe we can pitch in and get him a year's subscription?
We could each "sponsor" a month.

>175 Morphidae: Sounds good for me. I'm in what ever you chose.
178maggie1944
I certainly can volunteer to sponsor a month, but let's see how many ideas bubble up, and let Richard decide what he thinks will work best.
I am so glad to hear this is our biggest problem, for now.

Excellent news! The son has used a wifi hotspot at college for several years now. It's basically a stand-alone data connection through one of the cell phone carriers. He used ATT, I think, and was very happy with it 'cause he didn't have to pay for cable which he never used.
180mckait
Morphy, thank you!
Jim... good info..
I will share this info with rd. If anyone wants to sponser a month, should he do this, then do it with Morphy's link..?
I will talk to him when I can. I heard a rumor of phone issues there today, I haven't tried yet. I just got home.

>182 mckait: When I drill down into the TRU connect system, it is not available at Richard's address. We are all going to have to get used to being more careful about how much graphic data we pile onto his posts since many of these systems will be slowed down immensely, and the pretty "book porn," coffee cups, big graphic hugs we're used to giving him (and receiving from him) are going to use up his monthly data allowance pretty fast. I think we're going to have to find someone who is in the area who can investigate options for him before this can get solved.
186luvamystery65
>185 tututhefirst: That is what I was thinking too. He is going to have to cut down on his usage (especially graphics) if he is going to make it through the month with limited data. Affordable data = limited data.
I've had one of those flash drives and I used it when I went to visit my Dad, but you can quickly go through your months data. Not really a good idea for someone like RD whose lifeline is the internet.
Do we know if he can get to a library easily? I know here we have bus service for seniors/disabled. Then he could supplement his Wifi access.
This one is going to be tricky but not impossible.

Does somebody know what kind of internet access he had at the place he lived before? And would it be possible to install something similar at his new place?

So, are we still trying to avoid pictures because Richard's internet service is a little "too little" to handle pictures? I don't understand just what is acceptable here, and what might be too much.
Meanwhile, of course, good wishes sent to our buddy and hope these issues are all sorted out and settled sooner rather than later.....

I've resurrected this antique thread because all of these books were ones I read while I was in the goofy garage in 2014. An asterisk (*) next to a title means I want to get a review out someday. Otherwise, it's just stars.
