I was going to use the header "I could have kissed it", but I was afraid folks might think the message was obscene.... Anyway, I collect cookbooks--besides my general cookbook collection, with its focus on esoteric, Asian, etc. cookbooks (which I have not begun to input), I am collecting US cookbooks and recipe booklets dated 1950 or before (with some exceptions). I have a few local dealers who scout around for me. One of them is quite good at it--meaning she does ferret out some things from the early 1900s and even the late 1800s. Well, today, she had an 1848 edition of Mrs. E. A. Howland's The New Engand Economical Housekeeper and Family Receipt Book. And it was only $10!!!! I wanted to kiss it!

Of course, putting a bit of a damper on my enthusiasm was the subsequent discovery that I have an even earlier copy of this. (I forgot it was issued under more than one title.) Also, there were scads of them, and hence my ability to find two this far. But still... :-)

I joined this group a while ago, and this is my first post.... I think I'll put it on Cookbookers too, since this group isn't very active.

I know how it is when you find something you'd been looking for. It's no matter that you had an earlier copy because now you have two early editions--very cool! I always get excited when I find Maida Heatter's books, and I'm not sure if I have them all yet. So, for all I know, I may yet find another of hers unexpectedly at some point.
