The summer is almost gone and we still have ROOTs to go! So as the lazy days of summer wind down, let's read at the beach or sitting in a hammock or lounging by the pool!
I have placed a ★ for anyone who reached 7/12 of their goal. If anyone is 8/12 of their goal they got ★★, and two months ahead got ★★★ . This just signifies that you are on target to reach your personal goal if you keep up the same pace. Those without a ★ need to pickup the pace if we want to reach their goals.
Let's see the new Tickers sparkle with enormous proportions so that we dig deep and weed out those UNREAD BOOKS!

These tickers show the progress toward the group goal.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to ask for your assistance keeping the totals in 2014.
Anyone with the ° symbol next to their name still need to add their tickers to the thread or need to remember to put their total at the end of the month in the progress thread.
Please post your personal tickers in the ticker thread or post your monthly progress here at the end of the month so that I can gather the numbers in one thread as much as possible.
I try to keep up on the personal threads during the month, so having to revisit to gather numbers can be a bit time consuming if the system is slow. Any help is appreciated.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are the totals for July. If anybody's number needs adjustment, please let me know.
If your name is not on the list, I couldn't find your ticker or personal thread.
So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOK LOVERS, BIBLIOPHILES, BOOK HOARDERS - get out there and read those BOOKS!

Our goal for August is 3,059.
Seven members - Squeakychu, daughterofheaven, Ameise1, tess_i_am48, christina_reads, Caramellunacy, and jen.e.moore had already reached their goals and earned a star by their name!

In July they were joined by:
majkia
VivienneR
ipsoivan
benitastrnad
>

to all those who have reached their goal!

>>13 Tallulah_Rose: We fell about 80 books short last month so we need to read an extra 1 each to make up for that.

Me, personally, I'm hoping to be a really good girl and get back into the reading mode (no travels scheduled though some of my grandchildren will be visiting one weekend) and I have 13 ROOTs on the August reading list.

I actually just managed one last ROOT for July, finishing Phineas Finn on July 31, but I didn't update my ticker until today. That brings my total up to 19/25.

I immediately started another doorstop, Reamde by the always verbose Neal Stephenson.

Ago 5, 2014, 1:31 am

Hello everyone! :) Well, I finished back-to-back ROOTs yesterday, August 4th - Guilt by Association by Susan R. Sloan and The Diary by Eileen Goudge.

18Jackie_K
Ago 5, 2014, 5:19 am

I didn't manage to read any more ROOTS in July, but finished one yesterday for my first August ROOT (and 14th overall). "Mumu" by Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev - a short story which I'd downloaded to help me work my way up to tackling some of the mammoth Russian classics, but which was so depressing I was glad it was only short and which hasn't inspired me to go for anything longer!

I've updated my ticker, but not the group one. Amazingly I'm only 4 short of my goal of 18 books for the year, I will keep my goal at 18 and donate any extras to the group total. I'll be interested to see how close I get to my original goal of 25 (I reduced the goal earlier in the year when I was making heavy weather of reading. Very grateful for the short books which have helped me creep back!).

I wasn't able to check that my ticker was up to date for the end of July as my internet was down. I missed one book so I was actually at 33/35. I just added another ROOT for August so I am now at 34/35 - almost there!

I pulled If I Stay from my TBR when I saw a trailer on TV for the movie which is coming out later this month(?). A YA book about a girl who's in a car accident and must decide if she wants to stay alive or die. An out-of-body kind of thing. I'm no judge of YA books, but I thought this was well written.

I will be reading ROOTs to be added to the group total for the remainder of the year.

ROOT #2 for August (#15 overall) is Alex McCall's "Attack of the Giant Robot Chickens". As silly as it sounds, but a great read from a young first time author (I know his mum!). 4/5

I've updated my ticker but left the group one alone.

Hi there, everyone! :) I've been keeping up with my reading of my ROOTs, but sort of slid off the 'acquisition wagon' this past Saturday, August 16th - between us, Mareena and I bought 74 new-to-us books from our local library book sale. Mareena bought herself 22 books and I bought 52! :) It's my birthday today, so I'm sticking with my story: "Library Birthday Visit'! :)

I've updated my thread with what I'm reading: https://www.librarything.com/topic/163437, but wanted to mention what I've been reading here, as well! :) On Thursday, August 14th, I finished my sixth ROOT Prized Possessions by Avery Corman. I finished my seventh ROOT on Friday, August 15th - Behind Closed Doors by Susan R. Sloan. My eighth ROOT read in August was A Nice Place to Live by Robert C. Sloane, which I finished on Monday, August 18th. I finished my ninth ROOT for August on Wednesday, August 20th, The House of Stairs by Barbara Vine.

My last two ROOTs were actually acquired from the library book sale that we went to on Saturday, so I guess that I'm down to 50 new ROOTs! :) I've updated all my personal tickers, which seem to be working just fine for me - no problems.

I'm behind schedule on my ROOTS for the year, having finished 19 out of my planned 36. However, it is a nice feeling to pass the halfway point. Reading 36 ROOTS seems like a lot. Reading 17 seems much more doable.

#34 Ok, that's it. The Man Without Qualities got a good effort from me, but... just no. It reminds me of the people who recommended it to me 25 years ago, a couple of Philosophy grad students who were as arid as this book. It's dry, intellectual, and completely lacking soul.

I hate to give up on books, but life is just too short, so out it goes.

I've finished my third ROOT of the month and 20th of the year. Then I started, but tossed aside into the donation bin, a creepy mystery. I expected a nice cozy but this one was weird. I'm counting that as my 21st ROOT since (thankfully), it's no longer on my shelves.

So far my month of ROOTing has gone like this:
50. In This House of Brede by Rumer Godden; {acquired prior to L.T.}; (5+*); ROOT goal met with this one.
51. My Mortal Enemy by Willa Cather; {acquired prior to L.T.}; (3*)
52. This Rough Magic by Mary Stewart; {acquired prior to L.T.}; (4*)
53. Not So Quiet: Step-Daughters of War by Helen Zenna Smith; {acquired 11/04/2009}; (5*)
54. Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day by Winifred Watson; {acquired 07/03/2009}; (4 1/2*)
55. The Dud Avacado by Elaine Dundy; {acquired 8/08/2011}; (1 1/2*)

It appears that I continue to dig out books I have owned for eons. I guess that is a good thing for out of my ROOTs for the month, so far I have culled 2.

Edited to say, I thought Dick and Jane was going to be a light, fluffy book in stark contrast with the other two, and that seemed funny to me (even though I read like that all the time to keep the serious from getting me down). Then I went to sallylou61's page and read the descriptions of the books. Seriously, now, I say, "Awesome reading!" All three of those books sound interesting to me.

Ago 27, 2014, 9:35 am

Re 99 and 100. I should have mentioned in my write-up that the Angels in the title refer to the miscarriages the author had. She found comfort in naming her lost babies, and has a place in her heart for each of them. She also dedicated the book to them.

So far, I've ROOTed out 7 books in August, and have two more that I'm reading which I may or may not finish by the end of the month. (I'll probably finish one.) This brings me to 35 finished out of a goal of 48, so I'm a bit ahead of schedule. This is by far my best month for ROOTs this year.

Ago 27, 2014, 10:07 pm

Two ROOTs completed in August: Reamde by Neal Stephenson and Edith Wharton: Matters of Mind and Spirit by Carol J. Singley. I have a couple of library books to read now so I'm done ROOTing for the month.

21/25 Only 4 to go!!

104rainpebble
Ago 28, 2014, 2:27 am

In the past couple of days I have added 2 more ROOTs to my August list:
56. The Loving Spirit by Daphne du Maurier; {acquired 05/22/2009}; (5*) &
57. When I Lived in Modern Times by Linda Grant; {acquired 9/07/2011}; (3 1/2*).
This puts me at 7 over goal but the most important thing to me is that I just keep reading some darned good ROOTs. This is a good year. Less depression equals more reading. Yea, me!

I meant to join the Green Dragon group or the Science Fiction Fans group in time to get to know people and hopefully have some friends to hang out with there this year, but I never got around to doing it. I thought about going to DragonCon. I think it has been about 15 years since I went to the last one. However, I don't think I will go because the traffic getting there will be a nightmare. Alabama plays West Virginia in the Georgia Dome on Saturday afternoon. It 's bad enough to have to suffer through football season in Tuscaloosa. I don't want to have to drive to Atlanta with them there fans.

I manged to read 100 pages of a book, thinking it sounded somewhat familiar, before I looked to see that I had already read this book back in 2008. Somehow I manged to add a different book version, so it wasn't caught as a duplicate when I added this one. I'm thinking the difference was hardcover/paperback, but annoyed that it took me 100 pages before I checked.
