Thought we might start a new thread.

I just obtained The Complete Works of Josephine Tey (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00FKFTUXI?ie=UTF8&ref_=oce_digital_CA) on Amazon.ca for the great price of $3.08. I checked and saw they have it listed in both US and UK, where I don't have access to the listed prices but am told by a UK friend that it's not available there (at least not at that price).

You can sign up to alerts from Harper Collins US here Darryl:

And on ereaderiq you can add your Amazon wishlist(s) and then you get alerts on specific books you want to know about. ereaderiq's idea of genres isn't always reliable - "literary fiction" means "we don't know where to put it", but I find the wishlist alerts helpful.

The Book People (www.thebookpeople.co.uk) has emailed me saying it now offers international delivery at per item/weight prices. Obviously shipping costs add a lot to prices and not everything is going to be worth it, but assuming they count boxed or shrinkwrapped sets as one item, it may still be worth looking at for some items, eg a set of paperback books not available in your country that you really want.

Black Sheep
The Foundling
Royal Escape

Thanks for confirming if they are available in other regions too!

Ilana, I can confirm that several Heyers are available for $2.99 or less at Kindle US, though the list is different than yours. Well, actually the only difference seems to be that The Foundling is not on sale at Kindle US.

Black Sheep was the only title for sale at Kobo, my preferred e-book vendor. I tried to check Nook but was unable to access the Barnes and Noble website for some reason.

Thanks for checking on this Julia! I checked iBooks for good measure, but no-go there either. I have an iPad, but now mostly buy Kindle books because if ever I get a Kindle Paperwhite I'll be able to read my ebooks on that device too, because iPad+sunshine are not a good combo unfortunately!

49rosalita
Jun 3, 2014, 8:37 pm

Yes, I love reading on my iPad but it really only works indoors. I do love my Kobo Touch, though, and it is possible to load Kindle books onto it so I'm fairly discriminate in my e-book buying.

50Smiler69
Jun 3, 2014, 8:41 pm

Didn't know that about the Kobo (i.e. ability to read Kindle books). Any reason you prefer that e-reader? Other than not wanting to encourage Amazon, that is? ;-)

51rosalita
Jun 3, 2014, 9:27 pm

Well, that was part of it, to be honest. :-) But I am not in any position to call for a boycott of Amazon nor would I want to, because I do buy a fair amount of stuff there, not just books and I don't think they are inherently evil or anything. But I also chose the Kobo because it supports the EPUB format which seems to be more or less the standard nowadays for e-books. Kindle uses a proprietary format which locks users into their hardware even more than the regular digital rights management (DRM) software used by everyone.

Well, it locks them in unless they are willing to use a third-party application to convert the file to an EPUB file that can be read by any e-reader. I suppose it's not for the squeamish if you are very concerned about legalities, but because I only use it for my own personal use and I am not making copies to sell or give away (I do think that sort of pirating is absolutely wrong) my conscience is clear. I buy one copy of a book and I read one copy of a book. The only thing I'm changing is where I read it.

In terms of the technical specs of the e-readers, I think they are all pretty much on the same level. The Kindle Paperwhite is very good, and the new Kobos and Nooks are, too. So it really comes down to personal preference, I suppose.

Oryx and Crake
The Virgin Cure
A Fine Balance

are just three of the titles offered at $5 eBooks (in Canada) from my wishlist. I found the deals via iBooks, but also on Amazon, so it seems to be across multiple platforms.

There's also

Through Black Spruce by Joseph Boyden
Pardonable Lies by Jacqueline Winspear ($2.99)
Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley

and many others. Worth checking if this is valid in the US too.

I regret to say there are several fine ebooks for sale today in the US (and possibly elsewhere):

The Lord of Discipline by Patrick Conroy
Lie Down in Darkness by William Styron
Ike: An American Hero by Michael Korda

I found these for sale at both Amazon and Kobo, so presumably Nook as well.

First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong James R. Hansen

>102 luvamystery65: I listened to one of the Dr Siri books done by Clyde Chafer. (I can't recall offhand which one) The pace was a little slower than my normal reading (true of most audiobooks of course) but it fit the mood of the story. The best part was the pronunciations of the various places and peoples names. Some were very different than I would have thought. I may buy that one from audible and "re-experience" Dr Siri. Great series.

Vintage has been reducing some of its classic mysteries since they started issuing e-books. Gladys Mitchell's titles were originally about a fiver (GBP) and seem to have settled recently at 3.59 or 3.99. I've just noticed a couple of further reductions. The Saltmarsh Murders and When Last I Died are 2.99(GBP) or 4.81(USD) at the moment.

On the other hand, I added some Brother Cadfael mysteries to my Kindle, and a few other books that i had stumbled across. I'm not sure I see the value in Kindle Unlimited when these are the books that most often are offered for permanent ownership for $2...

I'm in the UK but I think that after a few sales, a lot of the content is recognisable and repeated, or from Amazon's own imprints - occasionally they do reprint or publish books I'd like to have, eg a lot of Ed McBain's 87th Precinct books, and some less well known crime writers whose work I've come across but which had since gone out of print. The best this year was one which offered a bunch of late 50s/early 60s classics reprints - Colin Macinnes' Notting Hill trilogy, The Golden Notebook and some other stuff I was quite excited about. And there were a lot of very brief and random offers in early January, including lots of quite new books, some of them 99p instead of £20 - they weren't even a formal sale which normally lasts a few days or weeks, more blink or you'll miss it stuff.

>224 majkia:: Although I'm a bit cynical, I buy rather a lot. Looking forward to the new monthly offers, and then a Christmas sale, hope there's something inspiring.

Current UK bargains - Monique Roffey, House of Ashes published this year - 98p

Looking at the Christmas Mysteries anthology, I notice that several Mammoth crime anthologies of stories by current crime writers, historical and contemporary, are available at 84p each, which if you like crime fiction and the writers involved, is brilliant value - I have most of these already and paid a lot more for some of them. From LifeHacker: Ebook search site Luzme is a handy tool for comparing book pricing among various stores. In addition to showing you prices for a given title across several services (including Kindle, Google Play, iTunes, Nook, Sony, and others), it also shows you how the price has changed over time so you can see if it's at a particular low point or if it it's likely to fluctuate at all.
