The second half of March found me busy working on projects so I slowed down a bit with my reading.

41. Black Heart and White Heart — Henry RIder Haggard
42. The Secret of the Island — Jules Verne
43. The Survivors of the Chancellor — Jules Verne
44. Robur the Conqueror — Jules Verne
45. Chester Rand or The New Path to Fortune — Horatio Alger
46. Colonel Quaritch, V.C. A Tale of Country Life — Henry Rider Haggard
47. 10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America — Steven M. Gillon
48. A Cousin’s Conspiracy A Boy’s Struggle for an Inheritance — Horatio Alger

The events of 10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America provide a new time-line for my roots web site, RootsTwigger.com. I wanted a third party frame for American history. It was surprising to me how many of the events affected my family.

I tucked your idea of reading to parallel family history away in my mind and had started trying to find books. I did read A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley which is supposed to be set in a portion of Iowa where I had ancestors. There was some land history, but most of the story was about modern farming and so did not really give me the sense of place I wanted. Will keep trying though!
