If you've seen the show Moonlight, this is a good companion. You have to be willing to accept the differences between screen and text. Somethings have to be changed in order for film to move along, but on the whole it's the same character doing the same sorts of things. It's not really an episode on itself, it is its own entity, which is why the title says it was what "inspired" the show.

Grinning, I blow a cloud of secondhand smoke in the guy’s face as he goes to stand over by the cash register, which seems to serve the additional purpose of propping him up.
See... A lot of the character is the same.

Reesa’s embarrassed at how little she can come up with, proving once and for all that the best parenting doesn’t get done on crystal meth.
And the show was narrated in this style too... which is nice to see them sharing that.

The last thing I ask for is a picture of Raya; something I can show around. Reesa says she thinks she has one in her dressing room and goes to get it. I watch her go. I’m reminded of the ocean. I light a cigarette. I wait.
I seem to remember there being more to this, it's possible I missed a bit when I copied it. I was driving at the time and only made a bookmark at a red light. It was the whole thing of the person reminding him of the ocean...

One last smile. One last look. I try to acid burn the image of her into my memory. I want to be albe to remember her exactly when I fantasize about being that barstool later. I turn and retrace my steps to the door, a cigarette smoke snail-trail the only evidence I came and went.
Really love the way this book is written.

Most movies are crap these days anyway. I haven’t really liked one cinse black-and-white went out of style.
Some part of me must agree to this. Sadly, this book was written /before/ the even crappier movies of the modern era came out.

I want to tell him he shouldn’t talk about a lady like that, but I’m afraid if I open my mouth now what might come out instead is a lot of sharp teeth and murder.
Simply loved it.

“Tell you what, you do your best impression of a lady and I’ll show you what else I found besides the gun. How’d that be?”
Same again. Love the way this guy talks. And if you've seen the show, yes, you hear it in his voice. :)

Hunched there, smelling the sour fumes of my own sick, I realized that Coraline was wrong. There had to be rules. Even for vampires. Rules gave meaning to an otherwise mindless existence. Without them, thinking beings were reduced to feeding, fighting, and fucking just because it was in their nature. If there was any point to any of this, then there had to be an attempt to rise above one’s nature; to be better than one’s basest needs and desires. Otherwise we’re no better than animals.

None of us.

Really drives the whole "why do they even bother with living a life" kind of question away when you read the book.

Cops lie during interrogations all the time. There’s no law that says they can’t. It’s funny. They lie, they’re pursuing justice. You lie, you’re obstructing it.
And that's the last note. There were elements of the book that were repetitive style-wise. It wobbled on the boarder between creative style and annoying at times, but overall I stood around when I was finished, wishing that the book had been a series.. er... I mean a series of books.. it /was/ a series... you know what I mean.

Okay, so I'm reading your notes in Alex's 'Mick' voice... is that a good thing, or a bad thing?

From what I read of your notes I am also liking the way the book appears to be written... and I have to say 'amen (or SMIB) to this bit: Most movies are crap these days anyway. I haven’t really liked one cinse black-and-white went out of style.

Ah, I just reached the comment where you say that if you've seen the show that you hear it in his voice - so I feel much better now! Might have to give this one a try.

Yeah, as you saw, I heard the book in Alex's voice too, even though I listened to it on kindle. :) It's really a shame more wasn't done for the character in terms of making it a series... other than the TV show, I mean. It was certainly an interesting way to get the novel published... Dragonheart did the same thing.. Movie comes out, then the book, which was like... How is this NOT a series like Pern or something? So much could be done!
