Happy New Year!

I started my year with the LAZIEST day ever. And I loved it. But I guess it's time to do something quasi-productive and begin the new thread.

Pending reviews are for The Child Thief by Brom and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

Slated for reading soon: Release (Protector #3) by M.R. Merrick, Silver White by Shawn Underhill (touchstone acting crazy, seriously, the first 9 titles had neither silver nor white in them), and Mila 2.0 by Debra Driza.

Some friends are also starting up a book club soon. So, that will probably shake up my usual reading list.

Yay, I found your thread! :) And once again, you have some pretty cool-looking books up your sleeve. Can't wait to see what you thought of them. And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who had a super lazy day, too. I think this was the first in god knows how many years I stayed up well past midnight--and I still feel exhausted. XP But anywho. Happy New Year's and best of luck with your reading, blog thingy, and book club! :)

Hi Katie!

Jan 2, 2013, 12:46 pm

Hello everyone!

For our book club, we just drew participant names out of a hat. Then we pick a book for everyone in that order. I got drawn first. Now I need to pick something by morrow night. . . so many choices!

Also, I just got a job thing today. I say thing, cause it's unpaid for now--but a step up from interning. And it does have the potential for moneys later :)

10richardderus
Jan 2, 2013, 12:49 pm

Yay job-thing! How great, and what fun to pick the first title for the book club. What's it to be?

11katelisim
Jan 2, 2013, 12:55 pm

Well, I just found out I'm picking. . . . so I've no idea yet! I was looking at books I have on my shelf unread or something I've wanted to reread to better understand. First meeting isn't until March, so (assuming I knock out these 3 review books I have) page length shouldn't be too much of an issue. . . . hmmmm. Or I could use this as an excuse to buy something ;)

But I will def let you guys know what I pick!

12MickyFine
Jan 2, 2013, 3:59 pm

Finally checking in, Katie. Congrats on the job-thing! And I, like the rest of the huddled masses, eagerly await the title you pick for your book club. :)

Editado: Jan 2, 2013, 6:54 pm

Okay, from my shelves I'm contemplating between The Fifty Year Sword by Danielewski, World War Z by Max Brooks, War for the Oaks by Emma Bull, Dirk Gentley's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams, Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde and The Player of Games by Iain M Banks.

T50YS just came out this year, so might not be in the library or might be a bit spendier. WWZ becomes a movie this year. WftO is set in Minneapolis, a common ground for the people in the club. The last 3 have been on my shelves for quite a while and seem like they could go well for this.

Any suggestions? Or helpful narrowings? If you've read any of these books, do they have good group read qualities?

ETA: DGHDA has been knocked off that list because at least 1 person wants to get their books from the local library, and our entire library system is void of that title. Haven't heard from the others on the library situation, but the two that have enough copies for everyone are WftO and SoG.

14Kassilem
Jan 2, 2013, 9:37 pm

Unfortunately I haven't read any of these, but I'm looking to read World War Z and War for the Oaks myself, eventually. :)

15katelisim
Jan 2, 2013, 9:56 pm

WWZ has quite the wait list, so I don't know if that one will happen right now either. I might just do that on my own before the film is released.

I also just learned that my library has book club bags that you can check out. Not sure if I'll do that or not, but a new option *shrug*

16richardderus
Jan 2, 2013, 10:01 pm

Damn, Dirk Gently was my suggestion. I didn't like WWZ and Pearl Ruled it with prejudice. (AKA binned it instead of giving it away) The others I've not read.

17MickyFine
Jan 2, 2013, 10:56 pm

>13 katelisim: War of the Oaks is on my TBR list due to a really good review over at SmartBitches so I guess I vote for that one. :)

18katelisim
Jan 3, 2013, 9:33 am

Richard: For some reason my library has the sequel, but not DGHDA. It's weird. I read a teensy tiny bit of WWZ while at a friend's house (like 4 or 5 pages). I don't remember much of it, as it was about 8yrs ago, but I do remember wanting to read more. I assume I'll like it, because, well, zombies ;P

Micky: Yeah, I'm pretty much going back and forth between WftO and SoG at this point.

19Ape
Jan 3, 2013, 9:45 am

World War Z is great, I gave it 5-stars. :) ...I think...

20bluesalamanders

My sister just finished War for the Oaks and loved it. It's been on my TBR list for a while, too.

21katelisim
Jan 3, 2013, 7:52 pm

I put WftO and SoG to a vote and Shades of Grey won. So I will be reading that by March :)

And I'll just have to get to WftO on my own at some point.

22foggidawn
Jan 3, 2013, 8:18 pm

I really liked Shades of Grey. It's quirky. You'll have to let us know what your group thinks of it.

23richardderus

For just a ghastly second, I thought you meant the smutty book, not the Fforde. *whew*

24katelisim

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Because that fits my reading choices.

I'm hoping no one picks that for their turn though.

25MickyFine
Jan 4, 2013, 2:41 pm

What kind of book club is it Katie? Just random picks?

26katelisim
Jan 4, 2013, 4:56 pm

There are six of us, and we are each picking one novel. At least this time around. None of us has done a traditional book club before, so this is all very 'see how it goes' right now. After one cycle, we may or may not change it up. I kind of like how I did it: narrowed down to 2, then voted for majority. We'll see what everyone else does in the coming months. Our first meeting will be in March. Right now we are deciding how frequently to meet. It's leaning towards every other month.

27MickyFine
Jan 4, 2013, 5:21 pm

That seems really doable. I think a monthly book club would be a little too much structure for me. Having to read something every month that I didn't pick myself might bring out my rebellious side. But every other month would be easier.

28katelisim
Jan 4, 2013, 7:11 pm

My review of The Child Thief is finally finished and live. 5 Stars. Amazing. You should definitely read it.

29katelisim
Jan 4, 2013, 7:13 pm

#27: Yeah, I'm a pretty big mood reader. I can soldier on fairly well, but after a while I do get rebellious. There are at least 2 of the other 5 group members that I share a lot of bookish interests with, so I don't think it will be that problematic, tho, either way.

30MickyFine
Jan 5, 2013, 6:29 pm

>29 katelisim: It's good you guys share some similar tastes. I'm a bit of a mood reader myself and while sometimes I'll have my next read or two lined up, sometimes I'll even rebel against my own reading plans, nevermind something that someone else picked out for me. Especially if I'm not feeling it. :)

Hope you're having a great weekend!

31katelisim
Editado: Jan 7, 2013, 7:16 pm

I did one of the challenges (I think it was 12 in 12, but I'm too lazy to check). I made the categories very vague and gave myself a smaller challenge number. . . . and somehow I still rebelled against it, lol. I get a little bit less rebellious when I can talk about the book though. And even if it's bad, I can usually get through it knowing it's just more fodder for my complaint cannon.

Weekend was okay. It was take two of the Vikings vs the Packers. Uff da. That was quite the busy day at the pizza shop. Then I went to a party and stayed out way too late; I was super exhausted at work the next morning. Luckily, we were slow. I assume no one wanted to leave their houses after football parties/drowning their football disappointment with booze, LOL.

ETA: I might be getting a Kindle soon. I have a bunch of ebook reviews and this bajillion pound laptop is terrible for that. I'm also going to Istanbul in March, and I might want something to distract me during the long travellings.

32saraslibrary
Jan 8, 2013, 7:55 pm

Nooo, no Kindle. But if you have to... ;) Actually, it makes since if you're going to Istanbul. Let us know how that goes! :)

33MickyFine
Jan 9, 2013, 2:46 pm

Ooh, Istanbul! That's exciting. Personal or work trip?

On the ereader front, keep in mind Kindle often doesn't work with ebooks borrowed from libraries. If that's a thing you might do.

34katelisim
Jan 9, 2013, 3:22 pm

On the Kindle front: A friend sold me hers for $30. It's a keyboard version and has 3G. Pretty dang good for $30! And it's mostly for early review copies, which have always been Kindle (sometimes more formats).

As for Istanbul--totes for fun. A friend is studying in Ankara, and he has a long weekend. We all decided to meet in Istanbul and hang out :)

Oh it worked out, just a little sleepy at work--which doesn't matter, cause I can do 90% of it in my sleep, lol.

Updates:

1. I'm about halfway through Mila 2.0.

2. I bought new headphones/headset that make me look like a Doctor Who Cyberman, lol. They also light up, bahahahaha! There are sooooo many cords and plugs! Seriously, these work for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, iPhone, MP3 players, and has composite plugs (the red/white ones that plug directly into TVs and stereos). One of the factors I bought them--I needed gaming and regular headphones, but only have monies for 1. The only drawback is the plastic arch (of Cybermen stylings) doesn't fit under a sweatshirt hood *le sigh

3. Internships are going strong. Definitely cutting into my reading/entertainment time.

4. Despite that, I'm gonna get my drank on and see Hansel and Gretyl tonight :3

I've never been much for online or computer games. The exception being silly match-3 or word games. And I've never been too much for multi-player or co-op games--which LoL is. Part of the reason being I focus and tune others out while playing. . . oops. I'll have to work on that a bit, haha. I think it's mostly because the only muti-player games I played growing up were VS.

Never heard of Kingdom of Loathing, but have played a teensy bit of text based adventures. What's it about?

Hey Katie! There are a couple of zombie runs that I found. One is in Mankato in April. The other is in Millville in July. You can sign up as either a zombie or a runner, or do both (by participating at two different times). I think both of them will do your make-up for you if you sign up as a zombie. Personally, I was thinking of being both a zombie and a runner...but I'll see what happens. :)

I had my first LT meetup with Rachel earlier today to talk about zombie runs :) Apparently, I'm social :3 It went well and we will be zombies this summer :)

I'm about halfway through Fforde's Shades of Grey, which is good, cause the book club meeting for it is Sunday. And since I work Sunday morn and have to do potlucky things in between, it NEEDS to get done Saturday night. I also need to look up some discussion questions and form opinions before the meeting.

Update!

1. I finished Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde. It gets 4 Stars and will have a review eventually.

2. Next up is One by Leigh Ann Kopans

3. I leave for Istanbul tomorrow morning! Yay! So I'll be off the grid til the 27th, or so. But I hope to get One and at least one other short book/comic/novella/etc finished while I'm gone. However, I do have a little bit of work I need to get done as well. *Shrug* Not too bothered by the slow reading year so far.

Hellooooooo!

So. . . . I've been busy. Ha. I got back to the country and had a massive amount of things to do.

Istanbul was great! And I really like this beverage called salehp that tastes JUST LIKE OATMEAL, but it isn't, and it's fabulous. But of course it doesn't exist in the States *le sigh

I finished One by Leigh Ann Kopans. Review here.

I also finished the super short story Not For Humans by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare while I was gone. Review here.

Next up: Arclight by Josin L. McQuein or whatever is next for book club. . . I can't remember the title right now. Bah.

OMG, you're alive! :) Welcome back! I'm glad you had a good time. Salehp does sound yummy (I love oatmeal). I'll have to see if we have any near where I live (we have a few international cafes, grocery stores, etc that might carry it). Or *gasp* I could try and make some. But I'm sure I'd end up poisoning myself.

I'll have to look around for those books/stories you reviewed. I love the cover for Arclight. It reminds me of a multi-colored 80's wig I had when I was a kid. :)

Huzzah for being back to a regular internet connection! Glad you had a wonderful time in Istanbul (I will be severely disappointed if you didn't sing the song while you were there).

I'm gonna figure something out for sahlep. . . . I've been craving it. I know there are 'instant' versions of it, like coffee/tea/cocoa. . . but, I just don't know if it will be the same.

They're all ARCs right now (or exclusives, in the case of Not For Humans). I was hanging out with my friend and she told me that she got 2 huge boxes of ARCs while I was gone. Me being sad on the money front (as apparently vacations sap that away, lol), how could I refuse free books?

I am starting to wind down on YA dystopians. . . and to a much lesser degree, YA in general. I'm gonna have to start peppering in some 'adult' novels, haha.

And I found the title of the next book club read: Second Glance by Jodi Picoult. I've seen her name around, but never read anything by her. New experience!

I'll be really really happy if I get back to back amazing ARCs.

9. Second Glance by Jodi Picoult 2.5 Stars
I may or may not do a full review of this for the blog. . . but here's an overall rundown.

Russ is a ghost hunter, not because he believes in ghosts, but because he wants to hold onto the slim chance that he might find his dead fiance. But after his ghost hunter boss tries to scam a family, he runs off to stay with his sister and nephew. Their town is going a bit cray cray after a construction company starts building on supposed Native American burial grounds--like raining flower petals and permafrost in the summer. As he reluctantly investigates the property, he stumbles upon a 70 year old unsolved murder that's entangled with the town's history, eugenics, and class divisions. Can Russ figure out what's going on? Can he move past his dead fiance? Will the town get back to normal?

This book was completely down the middle for me. The overall writing and structure was good, but there weren't any surprises to me. The historical aspect and characters were neat, but again, it was all very predictable. I didn't hate it, but wouldn't go back to read it. I feel this is for the more casual reader, one who doesn't know so many plot lines, one who will find the twists fresh.

> 139 - Well, I am intrigued but like you said, it won't work for a normal film format... maybe for DVD/blueray distribution? No clue how they would making changes on the fly as the movie progresses.

142katelisim
Jun 12, 2013, 9:22 am

Yeah, the only way I see it working well is if it's on a computer, tablet, or smart TV. Maybe a video game console, but then it's more video game than movie. This is, of course, assuming anything actually makes it to production. It would be really cool to be a fly on the wall during those meeting tho to hear all their crazy ideas.

Ago 23, 2013, 10:11 pm

Checking in. . . from a month absence. . . oh dear :|

So I did indeed finish Mists of Avalon for book club, just barely--the last couple chapters before work that morning. We had a wonderful conversation. Two folks hadn't read/seen any King Arthur myths/legends/books/movies/etc.--which I'm still just flabbergasted about. Most of us agreed that we liked it, but kind of disliked it at the same time, and unanimously thought this is one of those tomes one needs to reread a few times to fully appreciate. ALSO, the member who chose Mists had recently traveled to Glastonbury (rumored land of Avalon?) and brought us back cool little memorabilia.

Right now, I'm almost through SYLO by D.J. MacHale. I'm enjoying it, though there have been a couple "hrmmmmm" moments where it's just a bit too implausible. But it is for ages 10 and up. . . sooooo, in that context, there's surprisingly little of that, lol.

Next book club read is Anonymous Rex by Eric Garcia. It looks hilarious.

And my next arc is One Prince, Two Kingdoms by Jana Grissom (no touchstone). It seems to deal with foster homes, (self-created?) fantasy worlds, and tough choices in a coming-of-age, urban fantasy wrapping. I'll let ya know if those presumptions are correct and what it's all about when the review goes up in Nov. :)

As for non-bookish life, things are super hectic o_0;;;
Rebranding = more stress than could possibly be anticipated
Hopefully things will be calming down in a few weeks here though!

Nov 4, 2013, 3:19 pm

Hmmmm, such an interestingly awkward conversation I missed. . . .

Sticky strips? *raises eyebrow* That also sounds awkward, lol.

I've read Moore's vampire series and liked it -- I unknowingly read it out of order though (2,1,3) lol. And I would rank them 2,3,1.

I made it through 2 chapters of Lamb, then got overwhelmingly busy and had to abandon it. I do plan on reading it eventually, just. . . not now. That was a book club pick for a date I couldn't make it so. . . . no harm done.

After all the busybusybusy, I read Anna Dressed in Blood for a spooky Halloween treat :) I liked it quite a bit. Apparently there's a sequel my friend doesn't really care for, but it stands well enough on its own.

Next book club read: Glitch by Heather Anastasiu.

I also picked up The Dream Thieves, sequel to Raven Boys.

Such a slow reading year for me -_-;;

171saraslibrary
Nov 4, 2013, 7:07 pm

Awkward's our aim. And apparently we won that round. Yay us! ;)

Sticky strips are flippin' evil if you're an insect, small bird, or very hair person. See here. The insects (and sometimes birds) basically starve to death (or get a "fun" free waxing if you're the latter hairy person).

Well, best of luck finishing Lamb, if/when you get around to it. I totally know how that goes. :) I'm glad you liked Anna Dressed in Blood! That's one I've been wanting to read for awhile. And Glitch sounds pretty interesting. As far as cool books go, you're far ahead of me! :)

Yeah, I was playing til 3am by accident last night. . . . oops! Haven't had the chance to play yet today (apparently everyone ran out of leftovers today and needed pizza immediately -_-;;), but I'll prolly do a quest or two before sleep happens.

I have been reading the books in Skyrim. . . does that count here? lol. I would totally read a book based on their Sheogorath -- god of the mad (and something else I can't quite remember at the moment). Super enjoyed the mini story about the thief partnering with the man who was hearing Sheogorath. I wonder if I could find who wrote that and convince them to write a full novel. . . .

Jim, that's awesome! Does / did he like testing? I always thought it looked like fun, but could see it being something that could easily drain the enjoyment out of gaming, if managed poorly. I'm also pretty impressed that Bethesda paid intern testers.

There are books set in the Elderscrolls universe, but I'm not sure where they take place.

Oh, and "a quest or 2" will turn into a 5-hour play session, just you wait!

Did you play the Shivering Isles DLC for Oblivions? It takes place in Sheogorath's realm, and you eventually meet him and have several long conversations with him. He's delightfully insane. :)

No, I haven't played Oblivions. This is the first Elder Scrolls game I've played, and the first rpg on pc. Though I think we either have Morrowind (that's ES, right?) or Baldur's Gate (I don't think this one is ES) somewhere for the old pc. . . . old enough that I would probably have to use a DOSbox to play it, lol.

Shortly after I posted, I realized it was after 11pm. So I ended up not playing, and worked on some stuff instead, then passed out. Probably the correct decision.

Oblivion is really good too! I sunk 120+ hours in both Skyrim and Oblivion. I've also played Morrowin, I doubt I got over 50 hours into it, but it's pretty good too. It's gotten to the point where it's starting to feel a little primitive, but it's still a good game.

Baldur's Gate is set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe...I think.

He liked game testing, but it wasn't what he expected. He often had to play the same scenario over and over, plus documentation of everything he found was required. I don't think he would make a career of it - they worked him hard since it was the lead-in to a November release. :)

Yeah, I watched one of the on-disc documentaries for the God of War series...I think it was God of War III, and they showed the game testers trying to break the game. It sounds like it would be really fun for a very short time, and then it would become incredibly tedious.

Ouch, pre-release of anything is rough. At least he enjoyed it for the time he was there.

The only reference I have to game testing is the movie Grandma's Boy -- which I love, but I don't see it being extremely realistic, lol.

Stopping by with happy holiday wishes - New Years is still to come! - and I come away with not one but two book bullets for Melissa Marr books. I think I need to continue my fables and fairy tales reading into 2014 and beyond!

Hi Lori! Thanks for the holiday wishes! Hope you enjoy your New Years! And the Melissa Marr books--which, if you count the whole series, will be 6 book bullets muahahahaha!

Stephen, if you wanted a wave all to yourself, you just had to ask.

I am super impressed by Katie's curved wave though... *admires*

>193 katelisim:: Oh! Good to know it's full of spoilers for the series... I haven't read the Wicked Lovely books yet but have a few on the shelves (and plan to get to them eventually), and nearly bought Faery Tales and Nightmares last week. That would have been disappointing if I'd started reading and ruined the series for myself...!

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater, 4.5 Stars

Woah guys, 2 reviews in 2 days. . . . I don't expect this to continue, lol ;P

Faith, I'm glad you didn't spoil it! It would've been very, very confusing though anyway. I doubt you would've gotten far in any of the WL stories without knowing something was missing.

>201 katelisim: This one just shuffled to the top of The List so I'll be picking up a library copy on Monday. You're 4.5 stars has me looking forward to it more than I was already.

>203 MickyFine:: Enjoy! I really did love it (except for that last line, but I guess I can forgive that). I started reading it at an opportune time too, while I was interning at a Pagan tv show -- so I had kind of the 'earthy, magical' thing from all sides. And it's really amazing how well she captured those too. Some of the office was in an uproar at the time about the poor portrayal (read: vilification) of Pagan traditions in recently released pop culture / media.

Yeah, I read a lot less books this year and had a harder time filling it out. Filling out 13 answers with 21 books does sound like a bit of a stretch. I liked your answers though! :)

209MickyFine
Jan 4, 2014, 6:57 pm

Well done with the answers. You definitely have to be more creative when you have fewer titles to play with. I'm usually faced with the issue of having multiple titles that I like for one question. :P

Oh, and I should have a 2014 thread up soon. . . I'm about 2/3's of the way through Glitch by Heather Anastasiu

. . . . And speaking of Glitch, the game group I'm part of (Glitch Gaming) is hosting a huge event with guest speakers, tournaments, musicians, and weekend activities. So if you're in MN and enjoy gaming you should stop by :)
