It's close enough to the end of the year now that I'm thinking about next year's challenge goals, after not setting myself any goals for 2012 through simple oversight. (I did have nine new sections in 2012).
For 2013 I'm going to continue in the spirit of my 2011 goals, and have a 'depth' goal and a 'breadth' goal.
Depth: Read four more sections in my strongest class, the 5xx. That will bring me to 60/96 for that class.
Breadth: Read a total of three sections across my four weakest classes (it would be three, but I have a tie: 0xx, 1xx, 2xx, and 4xx).
Meeting those two goals would require seven Dewey books, so I'm going to additionally try to get to a nice round ten in total.

After a full year of committing myself to this challenge (and probably six more to come), my goal for 2013 is easier said than done:
Read more "hefty" books: In an effort to mow through as much material as possible this year, I neglected some larger selections that have been slowly gathering dust on my shelves. This will undoubtably push out my finish date, but it was probably a premature guess anyway.
Goal: Read at least 10 Dewey selections longer than 450 pages.
Other than that, I'm shooting for at least 50 more sections this year!

If I haven't said so already, NielsenGW, I want to say that I'm awed by your commitment to this challenge - achieving all the divisions is a long-term goal for me (, and I certainly don't ever expect to actually read all the sections - continuing to get more is more where I'm at. (There are some that are in use but there just isn't anything readable there, and I just have to hope that someone will, for instance, write an interesting history of celestial navigation so I can knock off 527. Oh, the 520s, how I hate them. If only all of modern astronomy weren't shoehorned into a single section!)

Thanks, lorax. I truly appreciate your praise. This challenge has really helped me get out of the reading rut I've been in the last couple of years. I've noticed that I don't really commit to an activity unless I have a goal, and this certainly is a lofty one.
I hear you on the readability angle for some of these sections (although for DDC 527 I've got Paul Rink's To Steer By the Stars slated). Some of the worst areas for me are the language and the general works sections. I've summarily dismissed 15 sections from my project as there simply aren't any books at all available for general consumption.
That said, here's to a good year of reading in 2013!

This year, I'd like to read finish the DDC books that I've started thus far...
153 - Thinking Fast and Slow (this is also not listed but this is where I think it goes since its about thinking processes)
378 - In the Basement of the Ivory Tower (well written but depressing, about adjuncting as English professor)
519 - The Lady Tasting Tea (though this is listed as 530, that can't be correct. its a snapshot of the statisticians that created statistics... leaves a lot to be desired, both as a history of science/scientists and at explaining statistics... but at least its in prose...)
579 - Mycophilia - about mushroom enthusiasts
599 - The Descent of Man (though I surmise that the Man part is actually relatively short in comparison to other pieces)
932 - A History of Argentina (though this is not written or explained particularly well, so maybe another...)
975 - The Swamp (I put this down so long ago I had forgotten...)
also The Art of Significance (motivational ... ? well, we'll see) ... .. .. The Long Ships (I already have a 839, but hey, why not switch it out if its good) .. .. .. and The Odyssey (or The Aenid to actually pick up a number and find out about that dang horse...)
7 books seems reasonable until December...

Ooooh think I'll check out In the Basement of the Ivory Tower.
I'm thinking of setting NO goals for this my first year (and it's May) on this Dewey thread. I think I'm using it more to just track and investigate and see what I read, but no doubt as I move along I'll start to want more and more to fill up the holes.

I've already met my "Breadth" goal for the year, with a 0xx (032, The Visual Miscellaneum), a 1xx (121, Doubt), and a 4xx (404, The Bilingual Edge) - I'm currently reading a 2xx as well.
I'm halfway to my "Depth" goal, with a 538 (North Pole, South Pole) and a 562 (The Crucible of Creation). I've got plenty of 5xx on my TBR shelves, so this is just a matter of prioritizing them above everything else I want to read!

I met both my mini-goals! (I do tend to set my goals low enough to be reachable.)
So I'm already thinking about a 2014 mini-goal; I may keep it simple and go for "one new section in each class". It would mean keeping a couple books in reserve for next year, where I have a TBR but nothing in those classes wishlisted, but I'm attracted to the simplicity of it.

Congratulations on reaching your 2013 goals, Lorax! And the year isn't even 3/4 over - nicely done!
I'll have to watch for a 2014 goals thread. My goal might simply be to come back to the challenge, since I've been gone from it for about 2 years.
