Many of my adult friends look strangely at me when I tell them I read YA. Other than Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, they aren't familiar with the genre. I recently made a few recommendations that were well received: The Dark is Rising series, Skellig and A Monster Calls. What would you recommend to a reluctant YA fantasy reader?

Technically The Hunger Games is science fiction (albeit social science fiction) since there is no fantasy/magic in it, but I too would heartily recommend it to adults.
For fantasy I would recommend Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy starting with The Golden Compass (which was titled "The Northern Lights" in the UK).

I would recommend anything by Cassandra Clare as well as The Harry Potter series, and the Hunger Games series. I'm currently working on making time to read the Graceling Realm series by Kristine Cashore but it shows great promise.

Patricia C. Wrede - Sorcery and Cecelia series
Patricia C. Wrede - The Enchanted Forest Chronicles series
Patricia C. Wrede - Mairelon the Magician series
Patricia C. Wrede - Frontier Magic series
Caroline Stevermer - Magic Below Stairs
Mercedes Lackey - Shadow Grail series
Some other of the Mercedes Lackey books are YA, as are some of the Anne McCaffrey Dragonriders books.
Agree that Terry Pratchett is wonderful. Everything else I'd mention is already mentioned.
