Prosperity and Commerce

I catalogued A Man and His Money yesterday, but I haven't read it yet. I'm reminded of several other titles that have a strong connection to finances.

Brewster's Millions is a set-up where Brewster must spend all of his money within a year to inherit a very much larger inheritance.

Oh, Money! Money! is about another millionaire who wants to get to know his potential heirs incognito.

I can't find it yet, but I know I've got it - about a poor young man who records his finances starting with the investment of a good suit of clothes, using up all of his cash without having a job prospect.

And of course, Keeping Up With Lizzie, mentioned on another thread, is about consumerism and debt and happiness.

I saw one I'm adding to my wishlist; it's another by Irving Bacheller, titled "Charge It", or Keeping Up with Harry.

Would D. E Stevenson's Green Money belong in this thread? I haven't read it, but it was mentioned by one of our members this year.

I'm afraid not. Green was an interesting old fella. It is his money that is a thread through the book, in a way, but it makes basically no comment about finance. Mind you, I do enjoy the book, even though it is not one of her best.

Buying on the installment plan and rotten investment schemes is the premise of Jack and the Check Book. This is actually six short stories, the first one is a parody of Jack and the Beanstalk.

>7 2wonderY: There are people who really dislike it. The story isn't so great. I just love George and his parents and Cathie, though. Paddie would drive me nuts if I had to interact with her much, but I love reading about her and the way her son and husband love and care for her. I think George is my favorite D E Stevenson "hero", Adam from Crooked Adam is another favorite. Most of her male protagonists don't do much for me, they seem a bit flat, especially when compared to the way she writes about her other characters. I do love her minor characters. I also really appreciate the way she writes about loving and accepting people as they are. When she gave a talk about her writing once, she said that she had the entire backstory of every character, I think it shows in her books, the characters have depth and believability.
