yes the eyesight may not be as good as it used to be...the old joints sometimes creek :((...and the odd muscle ache and the bad nights sleep does not help...but I refuse to grow old!!!!! I have just done a 10k in 43mins and was 52 out of 475 (why not shout about it!!) I am a member of a local running club...each day I cycle to and from work...and my job is physically demanding (I'm getting tired reading this :)....but I will not grow old...the Bristol Half Marathon is on the horizon and I will run with or without my zimmer......

Please let us know how that goes.

I managed a 1hr 43 mins in a really hilly half marathon today and really hot..which is unusual for the UK:))

Well done Trevor! I'm 54 and like to get in the odd half marathon when I can find the motivation. I'm feeling a bit sore this morning after a 20km run yesterday in just under 2 hours.

thanks gimboid...the weather yesterday was prob more similar to Australia than the good old UK...we have had a terrible wet summer here (jet streams so they say!) and since Friday a mini heatwave (well for us anyway) So you can imagine for the last 7 weeks I have been running/cycling in the rain/wind and all of a sudden it's bloody hot...don't get me wrong I quite like running in the rain but that heat was something else....anyway I did enjoy and glad to see you are also enjoying your running. I am part of a running club here....www.bittonroadrunners.co.uk....you?...although now I do more cycling (commuting to and from work each day) as it's much better on the knees...but I still love the odd race..my next being The Bristol Half Marathon at the end of September and am hoping for a time of around 1hr 38mins as it's a nice flat course
All the best from the UK....

>4 runner56: Congratulations and all that! I really admire you, but I have been waiting now for more than 6 weeks to find out what a zimmer is and whether you had one...

Or is it not good to say...?

Happy Running from the USA (where we don't know what zimmers are),

>6 runner56: I'd love to do that time! My recent best was around 1:45 and that was after a lot of training. I'm a member of www.canberrarunner.com.au. It's midwinter here and Canberra's cold by Australian standards so I'm sticking to lunchtime or mid morning runs. My next race is the 14km www.city2surf.com.au which bills itself as the world's largest run! Best wishes for the Bristol Half.

Ah, I see now. Yes, you would need racing wheels on one of those. Runner56, you don't look tired at all!

I can run about 6 miles in an hour on fairly level ground and break a nice sweat. I feel no need to be competitive but hats off to those who can. I like running in a coffee, chocolate, and aspirin induced state which temporarily dissolves most aches and pains - A slight endorphin euphoria and confidence that the aspirin will hold off all but the most determined heart attacks. I never run over the 6 miles because the last time i tried it resulted in aches and pains that seemed to portend a doctors visit which I can't afford.

Windsurfing is quite the workout also but the gear is so darn pricey.

There's a lot of truth in what DugsBooks says...I tend to cycle more and limit my running to twice a week...this enables me to run a number of road races in the year and do the majority of my training via a non weight bearing exercise ie cycling. I do most of my cycling as part of my commute to and from work, I also take one supplement "glucosamine" ...supposed to help joints...does it help? who knows but I think I feel better with it than without :)

Maybe its some kind of placebo effect but that sawtooth palmetto seems to work for me {for "other symptoms"}. I have seen articles that cry "BS" for the palmetto & glucosamine but if you try with & without, like you say, you can go with what works.

Congrats! I had a compound fracture of the ankle and a ruptured achilles tendon that has slowed me down considerably for the last year. I'm wanting to move "faster!" I've never been what you would call "fast"., but did do a mile in 10 min on the treadmill or 2 miles in about 18. That got my heart rate where it should have been. I'm anxious to begin again, but have 4 more months to "wait."!

It dawned on me this morning that when there is a man in my dreams, he is always young. I can only assume that I am also still young in my dreams since I could never be a cougar!

and just to keep you old 50 year olds up to date :))....just completed the Bristol Half Marathon on Sept 30th in great pain...I was tripped up 3 miles in...had to spend 20mins with our very own St John's ambulance...then all bandaged up I continued the run (my wife thinks I'm mad!!) and managed to finish in just under 1 hour 54 mins..I was hoping for around 1 hour 36mins and would have done this apart from the trip....I'm prob just a little mad but nothing comes close to finishing a half marathon even in pain....

Well done runner56! I'm a lot slower than you but I can understand the motivation to get to the finish line even when the pain makes it a struggle. My best recent effort is the 14km City2Sea in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago with 10,000 runners compared to 3,000 last year.

And here I am at 57 and still for some reason out running half marathons! I felt bloody tired today and asked myself am I mad, the old years do begin to catch up...but still I suppose if I manage to get around 13.1miles in some kind of shape I must be doing something right...It's the scenery you the buzz of the open air and the quiet autumn weather here in the uk today...look at some of the pictures of the AYR Half Marathon in the Wiltshire.....

Well done and keep going!

I miss it so much. My last 13.1 was a training slog, back in late August. The next day, during an easy 6 K of training, I pulled up lame. X-rays confirmed heel spurs - the bane of fat fifty-year-olds...

I don't run, couldn't if I wanted to (and I don't) but at 65 playing in a geezer R&R band keeps me young. For those who view running as a form of torture, consider rock and roll as a viable alternative.

Right now I am doing yoga, but I hurt my back…maybe…raking leaves? Pitiful. I love yoga! However it doesn't really have a cardiovascular component. The problem with running is that I hate to get up early and I don't like to run after dinner when we get home from work. I have a treadmill. No excuse for not using that except that it is boring. I put in a screen for netflix, but every time I think about using it I end up doing yoga instead.

>21 carptrash:

If you don't have a plethora of congenital deformities (like me), you can certainly do it. I started with a 0.3 mile run. In no time I was doing "halfs". They say it's the best feeling in the world -- when you actually stop, after a workout or a race.

I had plantar fasciaitis. I had Achilles tendonitis. I had meniscus tears. I puked - on my steering wheel - when driving home - a full 2 hours after a race. I had contorting leg muscle spasms that made me look like I had the Ginger Jake. I've heard that others, have had worse.

But I loved every minute of it. I loved running with my dog, yelling to passersby, that, "don't worry, I'll beat her at the end." I loved the solace of running alone on beautiful trails. I loved the running groups I joined, where trying to keep up with others during a mundane workout (for them) was like a race (for me). At races, I loved watching the 65 year-olds, swarming around the 90-year olds, as if they were high school athletic superstars.

I so miss the trails and roads.

Treadmills absolutely suck.

>23 Sandydog1: Yup, agree about the treadmills. Still, I am afraid to get rid of it.

I am back to yoga! On my own with an app on most days for maybe 15 minutes and a full-length class on the weekend. Still not extremely cardiovascular, but seems very good for me emotionally as well as physically so I am content with that.

Congrats! It's so important to do something, anything.

Now it's about time I get off the couch...
