Miami Marlins' Manager, Ozzie Guillen, was suspended for five games today by the Marlins for comments he made about Fidel Castro over the weekend. Guillen at one point had said, "I love Fidel Castro."

I've always hated the witch hunt mentality that attaches to politically incorrect statements made by public figures, especially when those comments are made by public figures who aren't in a position to do anything about the issue about which they are speaking. No matter how wrong Guillen's views of Fidel Castro are, there's nothing he can say or do that would change the facts on the ground in Cuba. The guy is, after all, just a baseball manager.

That being said, I certainly understand why the Marlins would want to be seen to be taking a stand on this issue. Cuban-Americans make up a pretty large part of the population of the Miami metro area. And many of them are people who either fled Castro's Cuba or are the children of such people. Saying you love Castro to that population is probably the worst thing you could say. Not doing something about it would have been very bad business for the Marlins.

Maybe you'd consider posting a version of this on the baseball thread? Ozzie has joined a dubious club with Steve Carlton et al. It's an interesting question.
