Hi, can i ask you something? My friend is looking for children books with "scary" animal illustrations, especially fairy tales. She's doing a small research research on that topic. What do I mean by "scary"? For example, Wolf (or fox) eating pigs (or seven kids or Red Riding Hood or birds in Chicken Little...) or being pictured with a fat stomach. Have you seen any book of this sort? Any sort of help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It's at my parents' home so I don't remember its exact title, but in the 1970s I had a fairy tale album that included a photo of the third little pig sitting contentedly next to his fireplace, where a kettle was on the boil with the snout, tail and paws of the wolf clearly poking out of the pot beneath the lid. Didn't think about it much as a kid but looks pretty creepy to me now as an adult. Yeah - in this version the wolf tries to climb down the chimney when he fails to blow the house in, and lands in the stew pot.

I've seen it, but not sure how easily you can find it. A google search will pull up some illustrations, but doesn't always offer proper citations about the books where they appear. You might try a used bookstore or the library, browse through their collection. Shel Silverstein's often good for creepy illustrations, but it's not fairytales. In the library, browse the picture books, but also ask where fairytales are in the nonfiction section...it's been a few year since I worked at the library, but I remember the creepier stuff being in children's nonfiction.
