Here's the first installment of the Kalki TOCs. This is Volume II, Numbers 1-4, Whole Numbers 5-8 (1967-68). Most of the content of Volume I, Nos. 1-4, 1965-67, irregularly published on mimeograph sheets, is reprinted in 2.1 and 2.2. In the end there were 37 issues, the last being Vol X, No.1, up through 1993.

With the exception of 3.3 (11) Kalki did not feature a table of contents. Indexes were compiled for the first seven volumes (28 issues; the final 9 issues remain unindexed) but these are not integrated with each other, not available online and are of varying quality – hence this Contents list.

The Contents as presented here have been slightly rearranged, grouped into recurring Features, Notes, Articles, Reprints etc. This listing is not absolutely comprehensive: occasional small items (for example, brief queries, or announcements of MLA seminars) are not listed, and only the cover illustrations (and occasional important photos or pictures) are noticed although typically there were drawings scattered through each issue. Also, parenthetical glosses are sometimes added by me to Note and Article titles to better indicate the subject handled. The goal is ease of reference, not diplomatic transcription.

The Third Window editorials usually included subsections of news, gossip, announcements, speculations – no attempt has been made here to catalogue their content, although there is much of interest. The Letters column usually included replies, sometimes lengthy, from the editor. Source Notes were sometimes consolidated into a single column, and sometimes scattered throughout the issue as ‘filler’. To avoid the multiplication of categories I have grouped as ‘Articles’ a myriad things – single page notes, descriptions of maps, announcements of publishing programs (etc etc) as well as articles proper. The Colophon usually announced forthcoming articles and features; since these either appear subsequently or do not, their content is passed over.

Not sure how I missed this when originally posted: thanks for it. Would love to have a bound set of these. Or even a file of PDFs.

This is not quite half of them. When I get time I will list the rest, down to Volume X in 1993.

Some university libraries have bound sets. Before I dug up an original run, I had xeroxed almost the whole thing from the sets at University of Md library.

After I finish the Kalki toc's, I'll do The Cabellian, which was only around 1969-72.

1981-1982: The Thomas Head Interregnum
In the Colophon to Kalki No. 29 (1980) Paul Spencer announced that he was stepping down as editor. His replacement was to be the academic and occultist Dr. (John) Thomas Head, a member of the James Branch Cabell Society, and the possessor of "an extensive knowledge of Cabell’s works based on many years of enthusiastic study and the amassing of an enviable Cabell collection, plus professional experience in writing and editing.” In the event, Head never produced a single issue of Kalki, and material submitted to him seems to have disappeared. No explanation was ever forthcoming. In late 1983 Spencer resumed the editorship and, assisted by Professor Dotys Crow Grover of East Texas University, jumpstarted Kalki’s final phase.

Book Reviews
- Berattelsen om Manuel Figures of Earth in Swedish, James Blish, 69-71

Presume that should be "on Manuel ..."

Thanks for posting, good to have the content available to online search here and on Silver Stallion.

>8 elenchus: Well, I don't sprequen z Swedish (though I did briefly make an aborted attempt at Norsk) but it certainly says "om" not "on" multiple times in both Blish's review and in Poul Andersons reply review of the same book. Also in the several ABE listings for it: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?kn=om+manuel+cabell&x=0&y=... .
Perhaps anglemark could confirm?
But thanks for your effort...

----------
Also, I just realized that the square brackets at various places in this toc don't translate to the square-bracket-unfriendly platform LT talk uses. They just disappear, which makes a few funnies in the above text. Yeah, I know I can 'fix' them, but this toc was ultimately produced for posting on the Silver Stallion site where the brackets work just fine, so I'm not going to take the trouble for this posting.

Thanks, anglemark

My mistake: I assumed since the rest of the title was in English, the entire thing was!

13Crypto-Willobie
Nov 3, 2014, 12:46 am

The LT bracket thing I mentioned makes that entry misleading. It's really (using squiggly brackets instead)
Berattelsen Om Manuel {Figures of Earth in Swedish}

14anglemark
Nov 3, 2014, 3:04 am

To be pedantic, Swedish doesn't use what y'all call title casing (and 'om' is a preposition anyway), so small 'o' in 'om'.

15Crypto-Willobie
Nov 3, 2014, 6:42 am

Thanks, I'll make sure the site's toc follows that protocol. And isn't there a diacritic in Berattelsen?

16anglemark
Nov 3, 2014, 7:57 am

Yes, see >10 anglemark:.

17Crypto-Willobie
Nov 3, 2014, 8:56 am

>16 anglemark: That link just shows me the cover. There all the words in the title are caps, and I don't see an obvious diacritic.

. . .

OK, I see from elsewhere there's an umlaut? diaeresis? over the a.

. . .

Translation question... it seems 'berattelsen om' is usually translated into English as 'story of' but I see it's also used for 'life of' in Life of Pi. So can we take it as intended for 'Biography' of Manuel in this case?

18anglemark
Nov 3, 2014, 10:12 am

The cover is using a font with a hideously ugly support for diaeresis, but can't you see it in the plain text above the link? Does that title appear without diacritics on your OS? Berättelsen om Manuel. Yes, diaeresis over the a.

The correct translation is "the tale of" or "the story of". Of course you can use it in the title of a biography, just as you can in English, but just as in English it connotes fiction (which probably is why it was used in these two cases).

>18 anglemark: "can't you see it in the plain text above the link?"

Ah, there it is. I can only plead poor eyesight; didn't have the screen size ramped up enough. The transplanted cells have not yet "woken up" in my right eye and the left eye is still to do. In about a year I'll be spottin' diacritics a mile off...

Thanks!
